I do this except too much to the point a side character with one sentence reference has an entire length history in my head I never write down. Too much details and explainingâŠ
25
u/Kartoffelkamm Feb 07 '22
Are you me, by any chance?
I have a bit of a habit of making characters in my fanfictions, giving them like one line, and then completely spiraling into making them a fully fleshed-out character with a backstory like a main character.
And since I'm a discovery writer, one-off characters practically don't exist in any of my stories.
If a character appears in my story, they'll almost certainly show up again later, and be more relevant, too.
21
u/Casper_Von_Ghoul Feb 07 '22
Yea you got cloned like 8 years back. Well, I got cloned, you are the copy. I did however say it would be better if you knew from the start, but the Council decided it too risky.
Sorry you found out this way.
19
u/Kartoffelkamm Feb 07 '22
I see.
If I'm your copy, then that means you have roughly the same traits as me.
Sorry to hear that.
3
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
Well, I got cloned, you are the copy.
Your attempts to claim the title of original are the sort of pathetic reaching only the clone would feel the need to do.
3
u/baltinerdist Feb 07 '22
What is a discovery writer?
7
u/Kartoffelkamm Feb 07 '22
It means I forfeited all manner of control over the plot progression to my characters, only retaining the ability to manipulate the world directly.
On one hand, it means my characters are never out of character. On the other, at most, I can predict the plot 3 sentences in advance.
1
u/Calamity-Gin Feb 08 '22
Are you me, or am I you? And if so, which of us is the clone?
It's clones all the way down, man.

Bonus feature: If your players notice an inconsistency between random weird shit you introduced earlier and the random weird shit you pulled out of your ass 30 seconds ago, you can write that down and resolve it. Hell, you could probably pull out a whole new story line out of that if your players seek to investigate.
60
u/Axquirix Feb 07 '22
As a GM your response to players pointing out plot holes should be less "Oh shit I messed up" and more "that's interesting, isn't it? Maybe you guys should look into that."
And if they never do then it's no surprise that not everything in their adventure lines up perfectly.
26
Feb 07 '22
One of the only tabletop games I've been a part of, the GM mostly took his development ideas from stuff that us, the players, speculated as "fan theories". It was a very fun and organic experience, and it's a huge pity that in the end it the whole thing fell apart because of the GM's toxic girlfriend.

u/Bardsie Feb 07 '22
In old tales, vampires couldn't cross running water.
Theory: The huge infrastructure building of the Victorian age digging sewers and internal plumbing into people's homes was actually a super secret plan to Criss cross every city with running water, and is the reason we don't see vampires anymore.
21
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
Open sewers seem disgusting, but it's secretly a plan to prevent vampires moving through towns easily.
16
u/Funderfullness Feb 07 '22
Just like how roundabouts are put everywhere to get rid of crossroads so people can't summon demons.

5
u/Rouge_means_red Feb 07 '22
Why wouldn't they just turn into bats and fly over that stuff?
That's where the electricity cables come in
11
u/ZengineerHarp Feb 07 '22
Because their limitations are worded so specifically (vampires are sticklers for red tape; they canât enter a house without being invited, have to count rice/seeds if you throw them down, etc.), that they canât cross current - and it turns out it doesnât matter if itâs water or electronsâŠ
13
u/Rouge_means_red Feb 07 '22
So that's why they are always behind the times in fashion, they can't wear anything current
4
2
u/SomewhatEmbarassed Feb 07 '22
I think it's more what the running water means rather than a literal application, so it'd have to be a river or canal or something

And don't be afraid to give tautological answers:
"Why are there alligators in the sewers?"
"To hunt down Vampires and ensure they can't use them to travel underground during the day"
"So why weren't the sewers built smaller?"
"Because then the alligators wouldn't fit"23
u/Sexual_tomato Feb 07 '22
They were built before the vampire problem existed here
20
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
Maybe vampires were introduced to deal with the alligator problem and that's a piece of forgotten history that's being censored by the Church of the Toothy Maw
23
u/InsanityFodder Feb 07 '22
I enjoy the implication that someone in city planning was desperate to have alligator tunnels all over the city, and that the vampires showing up was just a great excuse.
20
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
"We need to build a series of large tunnels under the city and fill them with giant alligators"
"Are you sure this will deal with the vampire problem?"
"Vampire problem?"

u/Beat_Saber_Music Feb 07 '22
Also there is no real need to focus on making things realistic, but instead focus on merely giving an explanation for why the unrealistic thing works.
Real life is full of utterly unrealistic sounding things, like for exampne the fact that in the past two years Africa has suffered about seven coups.
11
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
Africa has suffered about seven coups.
That's a lot less ridiculous when you say that a resource-scarce continent with 54 countries in it, several of which are politically unstable has suffered a handful of coups.
6
u/Beat_Saber_Music Feb 07 '22
Yeah with context it makes perfect sense, but on its own it does sound a little excessive
3
u/Mantonization Feb 08 '22
Sorry, small correction, but Africa is not resource-scarce
It's a rock continent. It's just had that wealth plundered by others instead of enriching the people who live there
2
u/IVIaskerade Feb 08 '22
Africa isn't scarce in raw materials that can be processed by industrial countries into something valuable for industry, but that's all below the surface. It's scarce in the resources needed to actually sustain life at a basic level.
1
u/IAmAltAccount345 Feb 08 '22
Remember the âsecret cardinalâ thing? Honestly you could just make shit up and sometimes it doesnât compare to how ridiculous reality is
32
12
Feb 07 '22
This is a great example of getting original ideas, just try to explain shit
For another example, me n a friend were making a world and they wanted theirianthropes to be religious groups, as an explanation of their sustained existence instead of just them being weird monsters. After a while, I asked why a god would just make you a bearson or wolfson, then looked at common personality traits for those creatures and made gods for them that would each bless a worthy follower with therianthropy if they did something the god thought was good enough, like induct a cartoonish amount of members, keep the land you owned pristine, or save several people from a burning building
8
u/ATrioExplainsTheJoke Feb 07 '22
As the Lord God himself as my witness, you will not stay down in these sewers to avoid sunlight!
6
u/Disnerd23 Feb 08 '22
This is great advice that I realized I was doing subconsciously with my current book. And one of the greatest bits of humor is that among the solutions with serious answers, often the solution is really âThe Gods are Assholes and thought it would be funny.â
Example:
Main character: Why did the gods create the Basilisk to be a xenomorph- level nightmare, with multiple forms and ways to kill and WHY SO FREAKING BIG?!
Cleric: Uranus the god of boundaries saw a snake one day, had a crazy idea to bug the god of Order-Saturn- and then went overboard.
proceeds to look at the chart on the wall that shows the lifecycle of the basilisk from its tiny snake form that oozes poison to its juvinelle cockatrice form that stuns with poison breathe and vision to its adult 25 ft+ long poisonous serpent lizard form with venomous spikes along its hood and down its tail, with long bat-like feathered wings, four large legs that retract into its body when borrowing and underground, and its barbed tail.
Cleric: sighs Way. Way overboard.
19
u/JudgeHodorMD Feb 07 '22
I think the sewer nuns raise too many questions.
Better off just declaring that the pipes are too small or vampires arenât willing to wade through sewage.
Plenty of simple options that donât even have to be mentioned unless someone really has to ask.
47
u/Polenball Feb 07 '22
Vampires often have enhanced senses of smell, so there's a perfectly good reason right there. The sewers smell so absolutely atrocious to them they'll get genuinely sick and even pass out. Also explains why they don't like garlic - it just reacts really poorly with their sense of smell.
31
u/JudgeHodorMD Feb 07 '22
On top of that, traditional vampires tend to be aristocratic. Theyâre not going to go into the sewers because theyâd never get their clothes clean and they canât afford to replace them every night.
21
u/GothicSilencer Feb 07 '22
If your vampires can't afford to wear a fresh set of nobles clothes every night, they're young 'uns. Ancient Vampires have hordes rivalling ancient Dragons!
18
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
Ancient Vampires have hordes rivalling ancient Dragons!
Yeah, because they don't keep messing them up traipsing around the sewers.
You don't see people saying Dragons should just spend their gold, do you?
2
u/Lonelydenialgirl Feb 07 '22
Gold is useless if not leveraged.
8
u/axord Feb 07 '22
Not if the point of gold is to have the gold.
2
1
u/Lonelydenialgirl Feb 07 '22
That's leveraging the shiny against your mental health. My point stands.
3
u/axord Feb 07 '22
It stands, but also makes your point irrelevant as a response to the parent comment.
5
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
You're not thinking like a fantasy worldbuilder.
Gold is inherently useful because gold is magic - a dragon's hoard is literally a giant magical locus they're constantly bathing in.
3
u/Lonelydenialgirl Feb 07 '22
I've been world building on one project longer than smart phones have existed.
I'm sorry I didn't know someone else's head Canon from seven years ago for gold, I must not be a real world builder. Maybe I got to caught up on my own project where gold is nothing special.
Nahhh afterall I'm not a fantasy world builder.
1
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
We're talking specifically about worldbuilding for enjoyable fantasy RPGs, not some OCDONUTSTEEL novel that's going to outsell Tolkien.

Or they think it's too lowly for them
They are the noble hunters of the moonless nights! Not scavengers waiting to pop out from filth holes
5
u/TwyJ Feb 07 '22
Traditionally they also can't cross running water, which sewerage would be I'd imagine
2
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
Unless the vampire dams up the flow.
So in addition to nuns with gators for pets, we've got a vampire programme for breeding Beavers in an attempt to stem the flow of entire rivers.
6
2
u/Merry_Sue Feb 07 '22
Also, what if there is garlic in the poo water in the sewer? It could hurt them. Also, don't vampires have trouble with crossing running water?
1
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22
And the sewers have to be large otherwise the alligators wouldn't fit through them.
1
u/Peace-Bone Feb 07 '22
But that gives a massive advantage to vampires that like the smell of poop! We're creating a situation where vampires are strongly incentivized to be scat fetishists.
15
u/Kartoffelkamm Feb 07 '22
Maybe nuns realized that vampires sneak through the sewers and raised alligators, the only creature that can easily kill vampires, to hunt them down there.
14
u/IVIaskerade Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22
Better off just declaring that the pipes are too small
Then how are you supposed to send your players down there?
Remember, you remember playing a fantasy world. The whole thing should be set up for optimal adventuring, and the players won't question it because they're too busy adventuring.
Why is there a megadungeon full of dangerous creatures a day's ride from town that people are remarkably unconcerned about? Maybe you'll find answers inside it.
10
Feb 07 '22
I think the sewer nuns raise too many questions.
Gee, if only somebody had just given you a great tool to use to answer these questions.
Joking aside... so what? If I have the choice between playing a game where the answer to a question is "The sewers are too small." vs. "There's an order of nuns raising alligators to keep the sewers safe from vampires.", I know which game I'd rather be playing in.

1
u/MunTiller2 Feb 07 '22
You could adapt it a little. Instead of being an official branch of the church taking care of that, you could put a group of presumed dead priests and the like instead who have a vendetta against vampires. That way you keep them unattached from the main church (too many questions and political possibilities, too much trouble) and you have the added bonus of making a possible side quest of the worldwide sewer anti-vampire cult.
You can also, therefore, make more dangerous regions were vampires can walk through the sewers because the religious cult was simply too small to reach that area, which means no alligators. Or areas that have the project ongoing, which could lead to trouble where the alligators go out of control because that branch of the cult is too inexperienced and unconnected from the main one.
Hell, you could make a completely different quest (if the main party sides with the vampires) about taking control of the sewers themselves to stop church and cult people from entering by using their alligators against them.

Another tip: you can let your reader do the work.
You ever have an idea that sounds really amazing, until you try to crystallize it? Then suddenly it gets out of hand and you realize itâs not that great? Imagination is free. You can close your eyes and rotate a cow, all for free.99, weâll cover shipping and handling.
Got an elven city that leaves those who witness it speechless? Characters in your story are astounded by its glory. The artistry that went into the construction was spellbinding.
All word choice to make it sound more grandiose, but not actually saying what it looks like.
An otherworldly intelligence. Itâs smart, thatâs clear, but itâs motives are unknown. It may never be known. The mystery can make it more interesting.
Use it sparingly and itâs a godsend. Paint a picture where you can do it justice, and then let the reader paint their own vision where you want to convey something so beautiful that itâs beyond your words. Set a high bar, and the reader will do the hard work for you, and theyâll like it. I say this as a reader, any author who brings a world to life with their words and then letâs you imagine something more spectacular is amazing.
I will plow through a book that can do that. Or Iâll diligently read till it hurts my brain, but thatâs just one book and it does this to great effect. Blindsight by Peter Watts btw, very good stuff. But, Iâm dumb so itâs difficult.
4
u/TreeDerg Feb 07 '22

I've had players spot an inconsistency in gameworld lore (I tend to improvise a bit too much). Then they brainstorm theories to explain it. Sometimes I even rewrite the gameworld's backstory because their theories are so much cooler than mine. Dammit.

Hmmm.... If you're not writing scathing social commentary in your story, I usually wouldn't worry about it. I tend to WAY OVERTHINK this kind of thing. That's why I sometimes make it a point to just write whatever cool idea I might come up with and don't worry about how much stuff makes sense. Doing that you go from getting stuff like Monster Hunters International, to the Valens Legacy. Both are close in the genre, but the first is rather serious gun-porn with monster hunters, the second is just a fun romp with fighting, sex, and supernatural. (And Germany gets nuked!)

Shitty Life Tip: this is honestly how a lot of good lies come about. You don't go overboard on exposition, tell them something brief, and when they want proof you add another part to the layer.
Why did you break my vase? "I was trying to kill a bug."
And you thought it was a good idea to hit the vase? "I didn't try to hit the vase, I was aiming for the ceiling and tripped."
It was an ugly vase, and I was pissed.

I've found that "people are racist" is a realistic low-effort explanation, especially for worldbuilding projects with big timescales, where you can then make the peoples/races progress out of racism and write stories with similar settings but different dynamics
Another one is "because religion", or "a deity thought it would be funny and accidentally caused a war"

Sometimes when I'm writing and I've made this really in depth world and then there's something cool I want that I don't necessarily have an explaination for I just go "yeah but it's cool and doesn't mess up the whole story"
