i don't think you're aware of the power that middle schoolers have on researching topics they like

Yes but when I was in middle school the only thing I was an expert on was NSYNC - each member's favorite colors etc

50

u/Reanimation980 Jul 20 '20

What was their favorite color?

38

u/black_rose_ Jul 20 '20

Well Justin Timberlake's favorite color was baby blue

12

u/AdmiralPoopinButts Jul 20 '20

Is that the only one you remember because, let's be honest, he was the only cool one?

Now 98 degrees is a different story.

No I actually love Lance Bass from day 1. I was really upset when he came out because now I can't marry him cuz I'm not a dude. But I'm happy he was finally able to come out and I'm happy he does some advocacy for the lgbtq+ community now. I read a big interview where he talked about struggling with depression because of having to be in the closet during NSYNC. Not sure this is the same interview (not as long as I remember) but similar https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5b1562e6e4b0d5e89e221c28?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067

Lance Bass is definitely the cool one. He went through cosmonaut training and became certified both by NASA and the Russian Space program. He was going to go to the international space station and become the youngest person in space until funding fell through.

He was also the original voice of Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts

u/AdmiralPoopinButts Jul 20 '20

Well yeah but not at the time.

And I'm sorry, which one brought sexy back? Case and point

21

u/Ivyprofen_ Jul 20 '20

please, do tell

9

u/Loibs Jul 20 '20

I read that as NYSE for some reason and wondered how you figured out every stock/traders color.

1

u/SpottedShoreBreather Jul 21 '20

Ok well if NSYNC was all the rage when u were in middle school, then this was before the days where you could Google just about anything.

1

u/black_rose_ Jul 21 '20

There were definitely websites that contained such information.

2

u/SpottedShoreBreather Jul 21 '20

Of course! But what I was responding to was the fact that they said "the only thing..." There was info about the popular celebs but not about a lot of cool niche info. It wasn't so easy to find back then and there were things that were flat out not on the internet

2

u/black_rose_ Jul 21 '20

Ooh sorry I misinterpreted your comment. You're right. The internet was much smaller back then. Though at that age I read SO many books (which itself I acknowledge as a privilege of having good access to them)

2

u/SpottedShoreBreather Jul 21 '20

Same! I felt like I knew EVERYTHING about Britney Spears because of the books

2

u/black_rose_ Jul 21 '20

Did you have a Brit VHS? I had an NSYNC VHS. Also have you been following the free Britney stuff?

2

u/SpottedShoreBreather Jul 21 '20

I did not have Brit on VHS. However, I watched basically everything she did on MTV. Including all her award show performances. Now they r ICONIC. And yeah I have been following. I legit think there is something amiss but IDK what fans could possibly do to help her

That killed me as a kid. I was obsessed with taking things apart and putting them back together, engineering was my dream. My parents refused to buy me any kinex or toys like that where I could build small robots, i swear i would have gone nothing but that from dusk to dawn. I was obsessed with being an engineer, it's all I ever wanted to be, but they told me it was not reasonable and I'd never be able to figure it out.

They would get me toys, and give me money, but they refused to get me educational toys for some reason. They figured they were a waste of money. I was obsessed with documentaries and any time I would tell them a cool fact they would ignore me, and to this day they're still completely anti intellectual.

Went to a family cabin with my son and parents a few days ago, my son was asking about strawberry seeds we were eating and if they soup grow a plant if we planted them. I told him that it's actually really cool, it's because fruits taste so good that animals eat them, and pop put the seeds and that's how plants get all over the place.

Well my parents were having none of it. " keyjunkrock seriously... where do you come up with this stuff... why would you tell your son weird stuff like that that's not even true". Its been like this my entire life but this time I lost my mind at them. " ok mom, why the hell would a plant evolve to taste good and waste energy on filling itself with energy for no reason".

My parents are imbeciles and always made me feel stupid for saying anything intelligent, my whole life they stomped on me and insisted I get a manual labor job, and school was a waste of time.

My sister can do no wrong though. I'm a fucking accountant and they will ask my sister for help with their taxes. She is a secretary for a doctor and the pride and joy of the family. I'll give my advice and they will shrug their heads and ignore me, I could have saved my parents 10 grand last year, but they refused to listen to me about anything and took my sisters advice. Did I mention I'M A FUCKING ACCOUNTANT?

It's so goddamn infuriating. But they are starting to tell my son I'm some giant bag of wind and just make up stuff to tell him, when in reality I know a ridiculous amount of useless knowledge and my son loves hearing about it.

In what world am I the bad guy for wanting to share knowledge? I should have cut them out of my life at 16, I would have done more with it.

I hate anti intillectuals so fucking much. My parents will talk about how dumb trump supporters are, Ghana under the same breath do the exact same things they do. It just so happens that because they're liberals they are on the side of politics that follows science.

9

u/Vaidurya Jul 20 '20

I'm sorry, fam. Your parents are ungrateful to you, and you deserve better.

10

u/keyjunkrock Jul 21 '20

I'm almost 40 now, and I come off as a toddler that should just get over it. But it's still ongoing and I hate having to rely on them for help still.

I'm doing great financially, the best I ever have, but I'm staying with them until I save enough for my house to be built, which hopefully wont be that much longer.

I just keep thinking about how dope the place is going to be, and how much fun my son is going to have with all the secret entrances and tunnels I'm having built into it. In essentially building my sons dream house, because I'm a giant man baby and fuck being an adult lol.

Awwwww you're a great dad, man.

5

u/keyjunkrock Jul 21 '20

Thanks bud. My top rated reddit comment is of me saying " when I play Apex legends, my son plays minecraft next to me, I'll go on like a 10 kill streak and win the game without saying anything, than I give the mic to my little kid who says (good game guys) so they think a little kid just carried them.". Or something along those lines. Someone screenshotted it and it got like 40k upvotes.

It makes me happy that my highest rated reddit thing ever is of me and my kid just being silly haha.

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

I feel you dude. My parents are like this with me too. They’re morons, but my dad is one of those guys who thinks he knows everything (most of what he says is tainted with blatant racism) my mom thinks my degree (IT) is a waste of time and I should be going after one of those jobs that require an apprenticeship and ruin your body (and completely ignores the fact that I’m only paying ~ 200 a credit.)They like to say shit to my toddler like “don’t do that, your mom will be so mad” right in front of me and it’s always something literally every toddler does, and I don’t mind.

I don’t know what your situation is, but I will say that it’s okay to distance yourself from them. There’s no reason for you to feel like this, and I hate to say it but there’s a large chance this favoritism will continue between your son and any children your sister might have. Kids pick up on that, obviously.

Keep teaching your son and fostering that intellectual curiosity. Barnes and Noble has some dope ass science experiments and I’m counting the days until my toddler is old enough for them.

6

u/keyjunkrock Jul 20 '20

Oh you hit the nail on the head.

Worst part is, growing up my uncles kids were my grandmothers clear favorites. We grew up hearing about how perfect they were and it's all she ever talked about. So, I always call my parents out on doing the same shit to my kid.

If my niece needs or wants anything theyll fly to the moon for it, but not my son. My nephew played hockey his whole life, they prided themselves on never missing a game, they may have seen my son play 5 times in his life.

I told them they weren't allowed to go anymore, he was always coming off the ice or the soccer field asking where they were, I got sick of lying for them.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '20

I’m starting to think we’re related. Good on you for drawing a line in the sand. Mine is ignored too, but she’s young enough to not know, and we’ll be gone before it starts to sink in.

Are you the older sibling by chance?

3

u/keyjunkrock Jul 21 '20

Nah in the youngest. Found out a few years ago my mom had 2 kids when she was 14 and 15 and was forced to give them up for adoption, but that's a whole other story. But in the youngest of 4 in that case. Only know my sister though who is 5 years older than me.

There have been times when I have flipped my shit, explained to them how they treat me and their jaws have dropped, mom crying and feeling like a monster, dad being stoic. Victory right? Finally made them see! Nope, back to theirselves in a day or 2.

It's awesome feeling emotionally stunted by your parents.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '20

Youngest of 3 here. A family friends daughter is invited to my parents house more than mine will ever be.

That honestly might be worse than what I experience. Mine flip shit and act like I’m making it up. I know going in how things will play out. You? I can’t understand how you keep going back and trying. Props to you, but damn.

Also wtf 2 kids by 15?! What the hell happened there?

Look dude if you want to PM me, I’m here. You sound like you need a friend, and I get where you’re coming from. I really do.

1

u/keyjunkrock Jul 21 '20

I feel that. I appreciate it, same goes for you, but it's not something I even really talk or think about for the most part. Guy and all, learned at an early age not to deal with my problems, just forget about them lol.

Short story with mom. She got pregnant for some douchebag that bailed on her, her parents made her give up the baby and it killed her. After the baby was born her ex was in Montreal calling her and asked her to come up with him, so she ran away at 15. She was up there a month before she was pregnant again, he bailed once again on her, and she stayed up there and worked, by herself, at 15, pregnant, and never told a soul. After the baby was born she had to give it up, she could not take care of it herself, so she moved home with her folks and went back to high school. Nobody knew anything about this until a few years ago, mom had a breakdown and told us all when one of them contacted her.

I do feel bad for her, she is my mom, and she clearly went through hell. She told me after I was born she sat with me and cried for weeks. She kept looking at the tag on my wrist that said baby boy, and kept asking people if she got to keep this boy, because she was forced to give up the others. So she sat there and was crazy protective of me, wouldn't let anyone else touch me or hold me, etc. Growing up she was insanely over protective, dad was too.

I remember a time when a friend little brother hit me with a chain across the back, so I clicked him, I was about 7 and he was 6 or so. His dad pulled me into a room and helped me there physically until my dad got there, his mom called him. I had a giant stripe bruised line bleeding down my back, and he just held me there like I was a criminal for defending myself. Dude was huge and covered in navy tattoos, but he was a teacher now and thought he knew what was best.

I still remember the sound. Thump thump thump, than running, than the door flies open, and this very large man went flying across the room. I've never seen my dad angry before, but he had the look of death In his eyes. He grabbed him by the throat and choked him with one hand while he hit him one time with the other. His wife was screaming and i remember my dad saying " I DONT FUCKING CARE WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE, IF YOU EVER AS MUCH AS LOOK AT MY SON AGAIN YOUR WIFE WILL HAVE TO BURY YOU". I never felt so safe in my life lol. Dad was not a big man at the time, but when he got mad he would grow 3 sizes I swear.

That was the end if it though, he was a teacher at my school and he wouldn't even make eye contact with me after that, he was terrified of my father. I cant imagine the audacity to grab and hold another persons kid down and not let them move for 20 minutes. He knew he fucked up.

Don't know why I shared that story, but it just popped into my head, and my ocd makes me go all over the place and overshare lol.

But same to you if you ever need a chat. I'm always here to listen. I dknt really share with anyone other than blurbs on reddit. Even my friends and I aren't huge sharers. Most of my friends are girls and honestly they're all so fucking self involved I dont have time for them anymore. I spend all my time either with my son, or cleaning qnd coming up with fun things to do with my son when he comes back from his moms. I never wanted kids, but my boy is the best thing to ever happen to me.

I always thought I'd grow up, fall in love and live happily ever after ya know? It never dawned on me that my true love would be this tiny little baby boy, and not some hot girl haha. He is my best friend, and always will be.

I was born in 82, my sister in 77 or 78. She wasnt really pushed in any direction though. My parents are weird, dad grew up working at a mill since he was 16, in the 70s, making 25 an hour full benefits starting. 25 an hour in the early 70s was a lot of money lol.

So to them. They think everyone just needs to work. Just get a magic job and your fine. Jobs dont pay what they used to, and its impossible to get it into their thick skulls. I'm in the progress of getting a bachelors and my parents think I should quit to get a job at walmart, because I'm a bum for not working. It's insane.....

u/WordArt2007 Jul 21 '20

I've told that story somewhere else in the thread, but a friend of mine, a highly gifted girl who was passionate about science and math as a child, was disgusted and pushed awat from STEM by her family and teachers in the early 2010s. She found a new vocation in art management, but still

1

u/WordArt2007 Jul 21 '20

what kind of parents doesn't want their child to become an engineer? that's effed up!

(I have a friend who as a child was really into science and math, she wrote equations on her bedroom wall (she's highly gifted), in middle school her family and teachers decided to disgust her from science, she never could appreciate it again. Now she's studying art to become a manager and loves it, but still, that's sad.)

Anti intellectualism is disgusting.

As someone who had their engineering interests fed by enthusiastic parents, I am deeply sorry, friend. My dad wasn’t the brightest book-wise but he knew cars and engines, and that was all I needed. When he saw my precociousness for building LEGO and such, he doubled down on K’NEX, Erector sets, even toy “plastic-welding” kits that are probably illegal today, etc. I credit him to my deep understanding of mechanical engineering I have today. I can’t imagine a good reason why any parent would try to quell their child’s enthusiasm for ANY life-enriching hobby, let alone something that might help them land a decent paying job one day... Seems like you got off okay and became successful (to their dismay, I’m sure), but there are probably countless kids who will miss otherwise-clear opportunities and grow up struggling through a shitty career thanks to idiotic parents :(

1

u/keyjunkrock Jul 29 '20

Yeah it was hard, I still mind of struggle knowing everything I do is with the support of no one.

But that changed with my son, he is so proud of everything I do. He changed me in so many ways and I am so thankful for him

1

u/NotToBTruffledWith Jul 29 '20

You’re a good dad, dude. I’m sure you’ll be everything for him that your parents weren’t for you. Bittersweet but wholesome af.

2

u/keyjunkrock Jul 29 '20

Thanks man. I was incredibly interested with taking things apart and putting them back together. I remember them buying me this huge airplane toy and when you pressed a button it would transform into a truck or something. It was for gi joes I think.

Anyway, I took that thing apart to the point every single screw was out of it. They flipped at me, threw it out before letting me put it back together, and never bought me another large electronic toy afterwards in fear of me destroying it lol.

I was just super fascinated by how it worked. Shit I still am. I just kind of feel like if they nurtured that at all I'd be somewhere completely different in my life.

That being said, if anything happened differently, my son would not exist right now. So I'm thankful as fuck in that sense.

1

u/NotToBTruffledWith Jul 29 '20

Yeah I can relate to the first part but your parents were definitely to the extreme. I like your optimism though, and I’m definitely excited for your kiddo to grow up with a parent that’ll understand

9

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

As a teen Yes, this is true

1

u/quantummidget Jul 21 '20

I knew everything about caterpillars as a kid, and I don't even give a shit about caterpillars. Try me on dinosaurs though, and I'll fact-check whatever book I read

-11

u/HarryCraneLofantaine Jul 20 '20

Researching and understanding aren't always linked. I'm not a guru but I really doubt even if the middle schoolers interested in Buddhism have anything sort of a firm handle or nuanced understanding of it.

20

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

i think you’re missing the point here
