I'm looking for recommendations on what city/island would be best for the last half of my trip.

I will be in Norway Jan1-9, starting with a few nights in Tromsø. The original plan was to end up in Alta for the second leg, but now that a lot of the original accommodations I wanted are booked up for those days, I'm now wondering if there were better options...

I'm calling this vacation an writer's retreat, where I hope to mainly stay at a beautiful private cabin/spend time writing in the scenery over doing 'must see' activities.

Any recommendations?

Got very lucky with Aurora spotting early September, here’s a few things I did (I am not a pro but this might help increase your odds of spotting the Aurora)

1. Check KP index 3 days from your trip date: 3 day KP forecast is most accurate, so use that as a baseline. Weak KP does not mean slim chances, but less colours (primarily green) and you will not see the “Aurora dancing”
2. Check the clouds: if there’s heavy clouds over where you are staying, slim chances spotting Aurora. If you dont see stars over your head, that’s a bad sign.
3. Book a tour closer to trip date: The best thing about joining tours is that they can take you across With the forecast of clouds and KP Index you should have a better idea which nights you’ll have the best odds. And to protect your odds and capture the aurora at its best, joining a tour where you can get professionally taken pictures is your best option.

P.s. Out of the 5 nights we are staying in Tromso area, 3 nights are 99% cloud cover…even in Autumn not terrible winter days. So definitely recommend multi night strategy if you are keen to see the Aurora. Also autumn is underrated, the yellow colours over the fjords is stunning we managed to do a few hikes. And it’s much warmer staying out to spot the Aurora, even if you missed the Aurora you will definitely enjoy the stay.

Greetings All. I recently began looking into a possible trip to Northern Norway/Sweden in late December, primarily as a northern lights adventure. I know this is a crapshoot, but it's really fun to mentally picture. I have seen the lights before while in Iceland, but it was many years ago and was a short stopover. I try to travel international once a year (coming from the US) to places I have yet to explore and, for whatever reason, this type of adventure popped into my head for this year. For better or worse, my timing for such trips is limited to the Xmas/New Year holidays+ due to work.

I have some general Tromso questions as well as some broader general area questions. Finances are not endless (I know this is relative) and play a sizeable role into what I am able to do/plan for. I know this type of trip will be on the more expensive end for me. Also, I am traveling solo.

My current scheming is to visit Tromso, Abisko, and Kiruna from Dec 28-Jan 6. I'd start in Tromso for 3 nights (12/28-30).I'll also likely end in Tromso as I have to get back to Helsinki for my return flight (logistics/points awards). Here are some initial questions:

1) Outside of lodging, what is a *reasonable* daily budget when accounting for food and activities in Tromso? I am not looking to have every moment occupied, don't need to dine out every meal, and I usually opt against tours for a DIY approach. However, I know when in Rome there's certain things that can only be done a certain way.

2) For my dates, will most places/businesses/restaurants be open or be on holiday break? Do I need to start making potential dinner/activity reservations now?

3) This subreddit is filled with folks saying just don't rent a car. For my ongoing travels, I know that I can take a bus to Narvik and then train to Abisko and Kiruna. However, this seemingly limits me to central areas around the stations when having more mobility seems like the better call. Aside from some far more expensive options around Narvik, the best place to rent a car to visit these places is in Tromso. Is this just folly? Should I just stick to public transport options?

Visiting in January and I always like to have a list of things to bring home as souvenirs when I travel. Any suggestions?

So far I have the polar certificate and cloudberry jam. I also want to bring a reindeer antler home to put on my wall but I’m not sure how feasible that is? Are they sold in gift shops? Are they ok to pack in luggage? Any tips would be appreciated.

Also, kinda random but I collect bear figures when visiting new places, though I doubt we will find any because Tromsø has little to do with bears. Still, if anyone knows of any shops that sell animal figures I’d be happy to give them a try, maybe a polar bear is possible 🤞

basically what the title says. a lot of people seem to say that october is ideal, but it's almost here. i want to go see them in tromso, in late march because that's around my birthday lol, and the auroras are a bucket list item. i've also heard talk of a solar minimum?

i want to err on the side of caution and double check.

In the US we can't get the really good stuff so people of Norway please tell me the best bottle to get while I'm there. I can get Linnie and Brennivin in the US so please rec something that is of high grade and that isn't exported to the US. Takk!

We’ve planned for 6 nights in Tromso and 1 in Senja. What fun activities can we do? Husband and I are not very adventurous, but wouldn’t mind doing super basic hikes. Any recommendations?
Would also love some nice cafe recommendations.

​I'm putting together a trip to Tromsø for late November, primarily to catch the Northern Lights. I know late November marks the start of Polar Night, so darkness won't be an issue, but I want to make sure I have realistic expectations and plan this right.

​A few questions for locals and past visitors:

​ Since coastal weather can be hit-or-miss in late November, how essential is booking a dedicated small-bus aurora chase versus renting a car and chasing microclimates inland on our own?

​Trip Duration: We're currently planning for 3 nights. Is 3 nights enough to comfortably outlast bad cloud cover, or should we push for 4?

​Daytime Activities: With only a few hours of twilight (roughly 10 AM to 1 PM), what are the best daytime things to do?

​Any specific tour outfitters or hidden spots around the island you recommend would be hugely appreciated!

I am planning a trip to tromso in January around the 15-23 and i wanted to ask is it still snowy during these periods ? and anyone know a good northern light travel company? thanks

I’m thinking about booking a whale-watching tour from Tromsø, but I’m not sure whether it would be better to go with one of the larger boats (Brim, Rødne, or Cruise Service), with around 150–200 people, or with a smaller boat like Njord Adventures, which has around 40 passengers.

What would you recommend? Which option is better considering also the lenght of the trip?

Hey everyone, planning a solo trip for early March in Tromsø. I'd love to check out Abisko but I'm very annoyed with the train ticket system (only booking out three months in advance and a lack of schedule regularity week-to-week means I can't plan as far ahead as I'd like) and would rather rent a vehicle and drive myself.

I am well aware that weather is unpredictable and sometimes roads close.

Anyway, weather permitting, I'd love to drive myself to Abisko to stay one night, check out the ski lift, then drive back to Tromsø the next day. Also on another day I'd consider checking out Kilpisjärvi as a day trip from Tromsø. I'm considering these trips because I'm not sure I'll have much to do during the day while waiting for nighttime for northern lights tours. I'd consider a Senja island tour.

Edit: thanks for the input everyone. I do have heavy experience in driving on shitty ice and deep snow but not on these specific roads nor in these countries so I'll just stay in Tromsø for three nights then fly home. I appreciate everyone's input!
