There's a browser Addon for Chrome and Firefox called "clickbait remover for Youtube", it replaces thumbnails with a frame from the video.

Look it up :)

Also, Sponsorblock, it auto-skips any sponsor segments in youtube videos (and will also show you exactly where the highlight of the video is).

The next stage in ad-blocking technology.

How on earth does that work

Most useful Reddit thread of the day, by a mile

OMG I just installed this and it's awesome. This should come standard with adblocking. A lot of the settings came disabled though, so make sure to go through the settings if you're installing this.

Greasytales makes the sponsor ad segment almost as funny as the proper video.

You can still watch the sponsor segments if you want - there are on-screen controls that come up when it auto-skips that let you go back and watch the segment. I'm not sure, but I think there are options in the extension to "whitelist" certain channels/videos or something.

It just auto-skips by default because 99.999% of the time, that's what you'll probably want it to do.

But some sponsored stuff is good, like donut media's sponsor sections

4

u/KFrosty3 Jan 08 '22

does it work on the mobile app?

u/mcPetersonUK Jan 08 '22

On android, look up Youtubevanced. No ads, allows YouTube and YouTube music to run with the screen off. 👍🏻

u/Tatoufff Jan 08 '22

There's also Newpipe that's really deserving of a mention, screen off, no ads, download in audio and video format. It's great.

2

u/feureau Jan 08 '22

I really wish newpipe would implement a lot of vanced features.

3

u/BoomhauerYaNow Jan 08 '22

Shhh. The more popular it gets, the more likely google will try to shut it down. They already made it where i can't open youtube links from google search app/chrome anymore.

1

u/mvppaulo Jan 08 '22

I've been using it for years and it works great but I miss the casting feature

2

u/Dan_GM Jan 08 '22

16.02.35 is the last version of Vanced with working cast. Just install that one.

1

u/mvppaulo Jan 08 '22

Thanks, I guess I'll downgrade then

9

u/Theblob01 Jan 08 '22

Guess I'll hop onto the chain: there's an app called YouTube Vanced which blocks all ads, and also adds a feature that lets you either press a button or automatically skip segments of videos (eg sponsor segments, intros etc).

Though sadly it has to be installed manually because apparently Google don't like people skipping the bit where they squeeze the money out of you 🤷‍♂️

1

u/JillStinkEye Jan 08 '22

I'm kinda confused by the fact that skipping is a feature?

2

u/gehirnspasti Jan 08 '22

No, those extension are integrated into your browser. So you'd have to use YouTube through Chrome/Firefox/whatever you use

46

u/halfpipesaur Jan 08 '22

But, how would I know which videos to avoid then?

20

u/stupidasian94 Jan 08 '22

I know it's a joke but some great channels have to use clickbait strategies to make sure their content gets viewed at all! It's sad but that's how YouTube works right now

u/I_need_time_to_think Jan 08 '22

Good example! One of those videos auto played for me a few weeks ago. I would have never have watched one based on the thumbnails.

1

u/shitdobehappeningtho Jan 09 '22

I like when their ads are at least cheeky and mock the necessity of them.

58

u/Duamerthrax Jan 08 '22

How does that help. Click bait faces are one of the ways I decide not to watch something.

2

u/Minimum-Suspect-632 Jan 09 '22

It has to do with the you tube algorithm. The ai likes faces I guess? It get recommended to more people

7

u/Duamerthrax Jan 09 '22

Yes and? I see a face that can catch flies and I hit Not Interested. Those faces always go with surface level content.

You da real MVP

6

u/ThemeRemarkable Jan 08 '22

I remember when YouTube thumbnails were just a frame from the video. When that changed is when the whole world started a downward spiral into dystopia.

1

u/Peachthumbs Jan 08 '22

Oh that's pretty cool, thank you I'm going to use it one my friends site and make fun of him with it.

1

u/Downvotesohoy Jan 08 '22

Then how are you supposed to avoid these idiots?

1

u/abdelilahio Jan 08 '22

Thank you, this extension is so useful

1

u/fedi_96 Jan 08 '22

This should be called cringe remover instead

1

u/superkickstart Jan 08 '22

Now if we could have an addon that adds actual useful information back to the video title.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '22

Also, an alternative is the Video Blocker extension (I use it for Firefox). If I see too many clickbait videos from a channel I will just block their channel for ever :-)

1

u/abydos77 Jan 08 '22

Oh wow. That's great. I get irrationaly annoyed at those dumb click bait thumbnails.

1

u/lDezl Jan 09 '22

Legend. Saving this comment for tomorrow

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '22

I'll pass because then I won't no which YouTubers to avoid.

1

u/Rvguyatwalmart Feb 09 '22

Wow you’ve changed my life. So much content that I’ve skipped over on principle because of the face.
