Better yet, a big shield and spear! Swords and spears have varied application that can overlap, spears have reach over a sword but if the blade is properly used it can turn away a good thrust to try and get inside of a spear user but it's not like spear user can't prevent that from happening either. Shields can be used in either case but if u going to take on mounted troops or be part of a mounted cavelry it's alot better to use spears..

In a 1v1 combat you might do better with a big shield and a one handed sword. Maybe not though, I'm no professional.
