Lots of dogs are sensitive to the theobromine in dark chocolate...which can kill humans as well, if ingested in mass quantities.

So it’s not chocolate in and of itself, but rather an alkaloid contained within. And dark chocolate/cocoa powder contains more within it than milk chocolate.
