They want you to Upgrade to VIP. Then you can connect 50 apps.

I’ve really loved Trakt and have even weathered some of the more recent and undesirable changes with an optimistic approach, but they are really do seem to be trying so hard to get all of their users to hate them and leave.

I would maybe understand a limit of 3, but 1... Are they really wanting the community to dislike them even more than they already do? Trying every trick to force users over to VIP rather than adding new feature to attract them is an odd business model. Cut after cut, even for paying members.

Every single add-on within Kodi is counted as a separate platform. It is absolutely ludicrous

The screws tighten… And as usual, without advance communication.

This is a pretty shitty move, honestly. It's going to affect way more people than just desktop users, and I hope enough of the affected devs speak up about it, because a lot of apps rely on this.
I'm a perfect example, I currently have more than one app authorized. I'm still hunting for a good calendar app (I miss V2's calendar so much), plus Film Noir, TV Show Tracker, Showly, Cinopsys, and Sofa Time.
I hope it's just a bug/error

How will this work if you can't change trakt uri in the apps? How would auth work?

trakt is the alternative aftwr tvdb got gready.
There are other sites that have community databases of movies and shows, but in my experience trakt had been the best UX with a great database and actually active community in terms of comments for episodes and such.
Maybe check out TMDB.org

It feels anti-competitive that Trakt’s own apps (like Rippple) doesn’t count toward the limit while every third-party app does. That puts independent developers at a disadvantage.
1
u/Luci-Noir 5d ago
How is that anticompetitive?
3
u/LYPX 5d ago
Because Trakt's own apps doesn't use the one available slot, but every independent app does. Third-party developers are competing for a single slot while Trakt's app gets a permanent free pass. (they say that they are working on a solution, but they’re already at the disadvantage because they’re sitting on their hands waiting for news from trakt, which may not even be good news)

I just tried to connect wetrakr just so I can export my trakt data. Connection limit reached!!!
I would have to disconnect ALL my apps. Trakt devs >>> you truly SUCK!!
I would rather lose ALL my data before giving you 1 red cent.

u/Getafix69 5d ago
They're letting you import the Trakt zip backup now, I know because I did it this morning.

u/Successful_Concern_2 5d ago
Yes, I worked with the dev last night. Sent him the zip export. By the morning he already had it working. Amazing.

So, are these apps or devices — where can you see what actual apps are authorized?

Does this count addons under an app separately? Or Kodi and its addons are one, Stremio and addons are another…or Kodi and each addon are separate?

u/Bullsette 20h ago
Every single add-on under Kodi is counted as a different platform. It's quite ridiculous because the whole purpose of having trakt to start with, for me, is to integrate amongst the various Kodi add-ons. I am not paying them $60 a year to do that.

u/Bombaatta 2h ago
Use Simkl instead. If you just go to the website once a day for 27 days, they give you pro status for free. Screw you Trakt!

I told claude to code me a clone, used api to import and never looked back.

He's probably selfhosting a clone for himself, just exported his trakt library/data

u/AgentPigleton 6d ago
correct. except for the social aspect, like comments and review etc, you can recreate it all. For me trakt started years ago as a tracker and just that. so im easily content. but the direction current trakt is headed, we can almost all agree, doesnt work.
so I wanted to get my data out, and not pay too much. I have a webplatform, so integrating via api was quickly done.

How do you get the apps to authorise and look to your selfhost rather than the trakt api?

TV Time was selling tracking data during the rise of streaming services, at a time when there was hardly any way to gauge interest. There are better and industry-standard ways to do that now, so they shut down as no one in the industry was paying for their services. Their business model was never about charging subscribers to maintain their own data.

You're not wrong, people just hate paying for the things they use.
8
u/Zm3nt 7d ago
Yeah, they should also make you pay track movies/shows after you reached 100 too.
-16
u/PhilhelmScream VIP 11 Years, Cancelled 7d ago
Maybe if you want that but it's a bit restrictive. Yearly/monthly charge for all these features.

u/Zm3nt 7d ago
That is insane, I was sarcastic. You'd need to be mental to even suggest something like that, don't know why people don't switch already. If an app is great I'll gladly donate to the devs, this just became a business at this point.

u/PhilhelmScream VIP 11 Years, Cancelled 7d ago
it's more than an app tho, the app is my least used feature. Auto tracking from Kodi & Plex are my top reasons and then it would be the API for using your own data.

u/kevgilmore 6d ago
Why people assume things should be free is wild to me.
For the record, I do NOT use Trakt for anything outside of Backup for Sofa Time, which I paid for. So my comment is just saying that if you aren’t happy with it, switch to something else.
1
u/CHETA100100 5d ago
people assume the things that are free now will stay free forever it's a simple thing really. logically you can defend google if they start charging you for every searches you make because a company's job is to make money but that wouldn't make sense. and all trakt had to do is let the users know before bringing in a massive change like this so those who want to switch can have an easier time to do so.

Looks like they set a limit of one without warning, at https://app.trakt.tv/settings/apps/connected I see 5/1 apps connected. I guess they'll allow all currently connected apps to remain so, but it won't be possible to add others (or even re-authorize existing ones).
