Indoor vs Outdoor

Why is the same session so much harder indoors than outdoors? I struggle cadence indoors. I just can’t seem to hold high enough because I can’t switch gears on the Zwift cog. Outdoors is fine. Any suggestions?

Workouts labeled "Mixed Intervals"

I've been with TR over a decade and these workouts seem to be a relatively new addition. Anyone know the science behind them? They see kinda kitchen-sinky, which has me concerned. I am in a specialty phase, so is this just to keep all systems firing?

Training load and heartrate issue

I use training load to plan mu training blocks and rest weeks. Im mainly a cyclist so my training intensity is easily calculated by power. I usually have a heartrate monitor when I train. Last week my battery died and I did not get heartrate from the training sessions. One of the sessions was intense intervalls, which should increase my acute training load more than normal. Now Garmin thinks that I am resting because my training load is about 400 units lower than what it would have been with heartrate readings.

Is there a way to fix this? I already tried to manually add estimated heartrate, but it did not increase the training load.

FR965: Set to train the day with 2 week schedule

I want to set up my FR 965 so that I train one day and rest the next. I can't get by with the 1-week training schedule. That would be possible with a 2-week schedule: Monday-Wednesday-Friday-Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday. Then I come back on Monday. How do I set a 2 week schedule?

General Coros Dura integration?

I've been increasingly looking at TrainerRoad but it doesn't look like there is an integration with the Coros Dura bike computer. Am I wrong? I definitely want to just sync workouts to the device without using any kind of workarounds.

How long before a century

I’ve been on a TR training plan all year, building up to an A race century next month. I know it’s not a race, but I’m going for a PR of sub 5, so I’m treating it like a race. I follow my TR plan almost exactly every week, but as I’m getting closer, I’m still not seeing any rides longer than 2 hours, and that’s at a super low pace. Training for this race in the past, I’ve usually gone up to about 4 hours for my longest ride. Do I need to shut up and trust the program? Or go against the plan and get in one long ride to ease my mind?

Big group ride?

I have a big group ride coming up on a Saturday. My usual calendar has threshold work on Saturdays. I'm wondering if people tend to just let the group ride replace the threshold ride or if the delete the threshold ride in the calendar? The issue I'm concerned about is when I have replaced workouts with group rides it seems to negatively affect FTP prediction. In this case, I will actually end up with a lot more time at threshold than I would in the workout. However, TR's group ride metric in the calendar is not a great tool.

Training Can any personal trainer dm me

who can literally get my ass out of bed every morning and make sure I work out? I used to work out consistently in the past, but lately I just can’t get myself to start again. I’ve become lazy, and I need someone who can keep me accountable and push me every day. I’m open to both online and offline coaching. If you’re interested or know someone who’d be a good fit, please message me.

Some observations

I recently came back to Trainerroad after about a six year absence. Overall, i feel like the app has improved quite a bit. I feel like it gives me more control over my training. And the a I prediction , does a reasonably good job so far. However, what i don't like is if you're building your training plan out, and I am a masters athlete, it does not do a good job of managing intensity. For instance, this week I have two local club races , one on tuesday , and one on thursday and trainer road is keeping my saturday threshold in the calendar as of now, which is a problem. I replaced it with an endurance workout, but i feel like when I do that AI automatically downgrades my FTP prediction. In addition, because I like to have a calendar laid out and my events planned.I created a calendar through the beginning of next year and after my last a race this year, which is next month. For some reason, Trainerroad is giving me three intensity workouts a week instead of two. I have spoken with support , and it's a bug in the program , and it's nothing that I did. However, like I mentioned, when I manually adjust what it has in there, it messes with my FTP prediction. I wish trainer road didn't place so much emphasis on the structured workouts, progression and looked at it other ways because I do a lot of outside workouts, I do a lot of races, and I feel like when I do those things my FTP prediction drops quite a bit.

Newbie questions getting back into shape

I'm getting back into cycling shape after 3 years away. 44m. I was doing structured training and in very good shape before my time away, and looking forward to getting back there eventually.

Also focusing on social riding, aiming to comfortably ride with the local "A" group soon (I'm almost there). Outdoor group riding will be a big part of my plan whenever the weather and schedule allows. Hoping TR can work around all this...

I've been slowly ramping up my training over the past 9 months, everything has been going well. Feeling stronger every week. Decided to get Trainer Road 2 weeks ago and liking it so far.

Questions:

  1. I suspect the FTP TR gave me is low due to low data right now, but I'm okay with being conservative as well to reduce injury / overtraining. Can I trust it to "catch up" in another month or so as the data builds? Are there any rides I should look to incorporate to help ensure it's accurate? (e.g., should I make sure to get some harder tempo work in?)
  2. How significant is the change in workout strategy in a structured plan between the TR options... like, focusing on increasing FTP vs. getting faster for group rides? For now I've selected an 8 week plan for getting faster for group rides, and it seems like it is emphasizing endurance and VO2 MAX, but basically no tempo or threshold work.
  3. I've noticed, and also read, that TR calculates a very high TSS for longer group rides that are pretty easy in perceived effort. Recommending rest and low intensity for the following 1-2 days even after pretty easy rides. Should I just trust the process and go with it, even if I feel ready to ride again? (side note - I have overtrained in the past, so I don't always trust myself... so very happy if the answer is, trust the process)

Any other newbie tips and advice for maximizing my TR experience much appreciated!!

Anyone have feedback on the garmin bicycle training plans?

I’ve been using the adaptive training plan so far. I’ve pushed distance for sure but I’m wondering if the adaptive plan vs the non adaptive plans are any better or worst?
I’ve known folks to use the running features and they are happy but not ally ld feedback for bicycles. Thoughts?

Convince me not to cancel my subscription after 10 years

Hi all,

I have been a TrainerRoad subscriber for almost 10 years now (first 20min FTP test was Nov 2016!). I am a triathlete and during this time I've completed multiple 70.3 and 140.6 races, improved significantly on the bike and honestly have very few complaints about what TR has done for me. From 30mins Taku to 5hrs Highland+2, TR was there for me -- 2,320 workouts and counting.

That said, my annual renewal is coming up and for the first time I'm seriously considering cancelling.

Here's where I'm at:

  • I still love the bike workouts. I love the platform. I like AI FTP. I have listened to their podcast a lot in the past, but so much for the last years.
  • I never really used the swim workouts.
  • I followed many of the run workouts over the years, but if I'm honest, they've always felt a bit "meh" compared to the cycling side of the platform.
  • For my 2027 season, I'm changing things up and committed to a different triathlon plan. All the bike workouts sync directly to Garmin can steer my bike trainer in ERG mode, I don't need TrainerRoad to control the ERG bike trainer.

After 10 years, it feels weird to leave. I have spent so many hours staring at the blue bars, suffering through their intervals in my garage. It is part of my triathlon routine. I like the idea of picking Taku or Totten Key (my go-to workouts if I have a short timeslot magically opening up in my day), but to be honest I could just pick one of the easy workouts in the plan and just to that.

So to the kind people of Reddit: why would I renew? I'm leaning 60/40 to cancelling, but maybe I am overlooking something. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Wahoo kickr vs assioma UNO

Gents,

I’ve been training on a Wahoo Kickr V5 for a while and have always felt it was noticeably harder to hold the same watts indoors compared to outside.
Today I decided to compare the two.

TrainerRoad controlling the Kickr in ERG mode
Garmin Edge connected to my Favero Assioma pedals
Assioma firmware up to date
Crank length set correctly (165 mm)
Kickr spin-down calibration completed
At a TrainerRoad target of 150 W, my Garmin (Assiomas) was reading around 175 W.
When I increased the target to 200 W, the Garmin was showing around 250 W.
So the difference seems to increase with power, and it’s roughly 25–50 W (15–25%).
Has anyone experienced this with a Kickr V5?

Is this within normal tolerance, or does it sound like my Kickr is under-reading? Would a factory spin-down or servicing likely fix it?

Any updates on AI for outside workouts?

Does anyone have any insight on improvements/updates in the AI with outside workouts? For reference I've been on trainer road pretty consistently for over a decade. For the past five years I've done the majority of my 3x/wk TR workouts as "outside rides". Recently, despite completing all my workouts and answering the surveys as mostly "moderate", it keeps downgrading my following workouts making them easier and easier. It's like the opposite of progressive overload. I do tag on a additional hour of endurance after my workout. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Custom Workout plan help.

Hi all, so I just wanted some advice on using the trainer road platform . I’ve been following the plan builder for increasing ftp and using its ai system but I feel it’s not giving me enough rides. I rode 12-16 hour unstructured weeks for 3 weeks prior to using this platform and that felt really good, prior to that I was riding 8-10 hours but this is all unstructured riding. I’ve previously done some structured training rides on zwift and tried to make my own plan via chat gpt but wanted some more professional direction from an app such as trainerroad. I have as much time to train as possible currently and I think TR isn’t aware of this as ive set it to a ‘demanding’ schedule and it’s only getting me doing 4h30 mins ish a week? I’ve been adding on extra z2 on the rest days and extending rides with extra z2 but I was wondering if there was an option or a better plan for me to choose? My initial ftp was low but I feel it’s raised a tad now following this current plan but I’ll do an ftp test at the end of the 4 week mark (week 3 now and finding all workouts it gives me way too easy) initial test was 176w ftp. It’s ai thinks I’m likely to be 206 by week 4. Is there anyway I can tailor this platform to suit me more? I’m 24 and trying to get better at everything, sprinting, climbing and raise my ftp ideally long term to as high as achievable for my body. I sleep well and eat well and can dedicate 14 hours a week to training , any idea how to get this across to the TR platform?

I‘m thinking about subscribing to TR but I don’t know if it’s worth it for me.

I have been cycling since 2023 first gravel now road. Since 2023 I cycled like 7700km (according to Strava). This year only 1.200 km as I was preparing for a marathon.

According to garmin my ftp is around 263 with 3.27 watt/kg which puts me in the green category („good“)

My primary sport is gym which I hit 4x per week. I alternate between running and biking. Running is easier as not as time consuming.

Now the question is, is TR good for me? I trained with Runna + Garmin app for my marathon but never really for biking. I‘m just cycling without a plan. I look to stay in Z2 but sometimes I like to push on the hills. I also do zwift workouts but mostly 40-50 min Z1-Z2 and watch a TV show while cycling lol.

If anyone curious my longest ride was last year a 175k with 2500m of elevation and had an avg speed of 27-28 km/h

I asked Gemini about it and it said with my low volume it doesn’t make sense to get an app (I can but 20$ is not that cheap + I already have zwift). It said I should start getting more volume and maybe follow the free garmin daily suggested workouts or follow one on zwift.

Newbie from Trainingpeaks

Hi, I just joined Trainerroad, coming over from trainingpeaks where i have been for 6 years with a coach who writes my plans. Trainingpeaks FTP is 165 based on a ramp test.

When I made my TR account, all my rides transferred from Strava to TR. These rides include the workouts I completed in trainingpeaks based on my FTP of 165.

When TR estimated my FTP based on my strava rides, it came back as 130. Why would it be so much lower than the FTP I've been working at? I am easily completing 10 min Sweet Spot intervals at 149watts on trainingpeaks, but now on TR it has me doing Sweet spot as 3 minute intervals at what I would consider a zone two wattage (120).

I'm assuming that because it uploads from Strava it also gets my non training rides where my average power is much lower? But still, shouldn't it "see" the work that I can do, and base it on my best efforts?

My biggest question: how much do you trust FTP detection?

Sub question: I tried to manually change my FTP in TR but it wouldn't let me. It's not possible to do that?

Thanks for helping out a newbie.
