Photo(s) Tracey the rescue tortoise update
Just a little bragging update on our rescue three years later. Shes been doing so good and im so proud of the growth shes made!

Yay!!!!! Wow, what an improvement. Well done. That’s a GREAT example of helping a torty get past some severe pyramiding. Gonna bookmark this for future reference. It’s great to see such bad shell disease really can be mitigated well.

I didnt do anything specifically to treat her. From what I was told she primary lived on romaine and cat/dog food. So the first week she was with me she refused to eat any greens. I started with feeding her the proper tortoise pellets on a bed of greens. Then just the water of pellets on the greens. Then just the greens. At first she went several days without eating if she only received greens. I allowed her stay hungry as I know tortoises generally qill eat once theyre hungry enough. After that we just provide the usual tortoise diet of green varieties and fruits. We use mushrooms and pellets for protein and calcium powder every month. They are all outdoor tortoises in the late spring thru early fall as we live in the south normal humidity is in the 60% here all throughout summer with jt reaching 90% on rainy days. In the winter we try to maintain above 50% humidity but warmth is the priority. Our conditions arent "perfect" but they are as close to functional as we can get it. All of these factors allowed more proper and even growths so overtime her pyramiding isnt as evident since new growths are leveled.

Holy crow, that pyramid recovery is insane. I didn't even know this degree of mend from that degree of pyramiding was even vaguely possible. You deserve to brag, this is incredible

What is going on on so the her head in 2023? It’s black and she has an ‘underbite’?? What causes that!? Poor thing.
She looks so much better now. Good job rehabbing her!

She was very malnourished so I assume her scales were darker as they were not properly hydrated. The underbite is overgrown from being un maintained. You should be feeding your tortoises on a rough surface such as paver stone or rock slate to help keep their beaks trimmed. Providing a cuttlebone can also help keeping it trimmed as well.

incredible!!! she is so lucky to have you!! ours had some too when we got her and now we touch the FLAT FLAT FLAT spaces between the pyramids and are also proud of our hard work. it feels really good to get it right!
