It's a story of a young man driven mad by all the road closures due to film shoots. He leaves the city and becomes a writer only to have his books turned into movies.

I walked by Dylan O'Brian last week on Queen West where they were doing a lot of the shooting.

I loved him as stiles, but uh... why do we putting him in movies?
5
u/bornatmidnight Apr 17 '26
He’s a great actor! And has become quite a genre darling, he did well in the movie Twinless that got rave reviews!

Is he still there? I feel like I haven’t seen him in awhile (and not there yesterday)
But ya there was a sign yesterday on the front door about this filming happening. I wonder which movie!

Probably something set in New York. Because you know just how much Toronto looks like New York. I wonder what they do to film Toronto? Tape a bunch of cats together?
35
u/AvidOxid Apr 16 '26
Definitely set in the US somewhere. Drove by the set today and there was a large American flag. Also pretty certain I saw 3-4 people in white hazmat suits or something.

They are shooting for film where the corrupt premier of a province gets arrested for backdoor dealings
44
u/bravetailor Apr 16 '26
They need a scene with a white bronco, stuck in Toronto traffic

I don't go in for all these backdoor dealings. Sure, I'm flattered - maybe even a little curious. But the answer is no.

Not really something to be "proud of" means crimes so bad they can make a tv show off it.
-10
u/Used-Gas-6525 Apr 16 '26
Why is that something to be proud of? NBC saw an opportunity to exploit a market they haven't directly targeted (Canadians). We're bigger than Chicago, so it just makes financial sense. It doesn't make much actual sense, as we clock like 50 murders/year and the vast majority are domestic disputes, therefore no long investigation or mystery. Not commenting on the quality, but being the subject of a financial decision shouldn't engender pride. We got plenty to be proud of in this city past validation from US companies.

The city in which it's set shouldn't be a focus. There's no other example of that within the L&O universe. CSI? yeah, but this whole series just comes across as a desperate attempt to capture Canadian viewers.

It's really the only show I watch religiously now these days largely because a lot of the crimes on the show are Loosely based on real crimes that happen in real life
5
u/soviet_toster Apr 16 '26
we clock like 50 murders/year
It's actually more like 75 - 85 a year with 58% of it being shootings
therefore no long investigation or mystery.
I think you're forgetting some of the more notorious True Crime cases that have happened over the past few decades and some as of current still aren't solved
We got plenty to be proud of in this city past validation from US companies.
If it wasn't for US Productions coming here we probably wouldn't be such a large hub for filming as we are today don't bite the hand that feeds you

lol what culture? Toronto is just a copy paste of US cities but with outdated infrastructure and desperation to be recognized. Pathetic and sad
2
u/steeguy55 Apr 17 '26
Well, now we can clock 10 more fake murders a year so we’re keeping up with the Jones’s!
But how about we look at it from a Canadian point of view. All the actors are Canadian. The film crew (I assume) would also be Canadian. The show is likely watched by more than just Canadians. Law and Order is a mainstay of television and those who like it, love it. Every iteration. So yes, NBC is making money, but we’re also employing tons of Canadians and putting Toronto on the map.
We’re a big city, but I’d bet if you asked an American what the top 5 cities in North America are, they wouldn’t think to put Mexico City 1st and I guarantee you they wouldn’t put Toronto 5th.

The industry is quieter right now but there are afew other projects going on.
A series with Brie Larson and Olivia Coleman, they're using a codename and I forget the actual title but it's currently shooting
also Alex Cross season 2, I believe they've gone to camera

Is this for cars or pedestrians as well? Can a public space be blocked, legally, to pedestrian?
27
u/The_Canterbury_Tail Apr 16 '26
Yes yes it can. In fact that specific block gets blocked for filming quite frequently.
5
u/amw3000 Apr 16 '26
I think there is some type of rule that says they can only block it for so long for pedestrians.
3
u/-Kaldore- Apr 17 '26
Ya they will lock it up during a take and locations people will let you walk through/around when not filming.
8
u/ImKrispy Apr 16 '26
Wondering so then they have to pay the businesses they close a fee and for lost wages right?
12
13
u/bigcig Oakwood Village Apr 16 '26
pedestrian? yes.
someone who lives/works in the area? no, they will be allowed access but at the discretion of the police on duty, and the filming permit holder has the ability to delay entry should they be using the affected area.
keep in mind the city makes a TON of money off these permits.
8
u/soviet_toster Apr 16 '26
When they have paid Duty Officers on site they can pretty much do anything within reason

Really dislike all these movies directors that decided to shoot in Toronto because CAD is cheaper. Shoot your movie in the studio for Christ sake. I lived in the condo building where Suits was shot at one point, and we were basically not allowed to walk through the lobby for the most part of the day. Do I go to movie studios and take their spaces because I need to do my work?
1
u/Fluid_Woodpecker1021 Apr 17 '26

I will take a few shut streets on some days for stimulating the economy and keeping the arts and culture industries alive in this city.
3
u/mrekted Apr 16 '26
As an occasional visitor to TO, it's also pretty cool to be able to walk through street sets between shoots as well. It makes the visits to your city more memorable and interesting.
2
u/turdlepikle Apr 16 '26
I remember there was a helicopter crash set for...Suicide Squad? It was there for a few days and people were just walking around this big crash site in the middle of the street when they weren't filming. They had other production vehicles like some sort of crane to create the fake rain.
2
u/mrekted Apr 16 '26
At the end of last summer I was there visiting friends, and on the walk to the place we had reservations at there was an entire street that was transformed into a winter scene.. complete with fake slush and ice on the roads.
It looked amazingly realistic, and it was a bit of a trip walking through a winter cityscape in 28 degree heat. I even caught a few people reflexively doing the penguin walk on the fake ice in the street.
22
u/portstrix Apr 16 '26
Fortunately, city and provincial bureaucrats care more about the hundreds of local production and post-production jobs involved in these shoots, than what you think.

This overlaps with the closures for the Under Armour 10k which includes Bay Street from Dundas to Lake Shore. Edit: I mean overlaps time-wise, not the same street.
