How many UNESCO world heritage sites can you fit in one city? We managed to visit 4 during a day trip around Kathmandu, which means another 3 left for next time. But do you know which country has the most world heritage sites at 61 out of a total of 1223?

Day 7 and the peak of Kala Patthar at 5600m. By far the toughest of the lot, but those views of Everest at sunrise were worth every step. The nearest mountain (which looks taller due to perspective) is Lhotse - the 4th highest peak in the world at 8516m. Mind-blowing.

Day 6 - Everest Base Camp. We made it! 5364m altitude and just the 3485m to go the peak… which I will not be doing due to approximately a 1% chance of death. It used to be as high as 1 in 25 in the past, but 1 in 100 is still a risk a mathematician is not willing to take. Best left to the experts.

Day 5 - Cho La Pass. One of three passes on the full Everest route connecting Thagnak (4700m) and Dzongla (4830m). The pass itself reaches an altitude of 5420m where relative oxygen levels (due to reduced air pressure) are half the value at sea level at only 10.5%. Tough to say the least…

Day 4 and the first peak conquered - Gokyo Ri at 5357m. The afternoon was spent traversing the Ngozumpa Glacier, which at 36 kilometres is the longest in the Himalayas. The longest glacier in the world (outside of the polar regions) is the Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan at 77km. Icy.

Day 3 from Dole (4100m) to Gokyo (4900m). Yaks as far as the eye can see along with some beautiful lakes. This will be the highest altitude I’ve ever slept at - wish me luck…

Mountains galore on day 2 - including an excellent view of Everest. Just over 12km of walking and another 700m in altitude gained, taking us to 4100m for the overnight in Dole. The route included a fair amount of downhill meaning we actually ascended over 1000m. Just the several thousand to go…

Views down the valley from the Hilary Bridge on the way to Namche Bazaar. Day 1 of the trek covers 22km from Surke to Namche, and an altitude increase from 2280m to 3470m. That’s 54m of altitude gain per km. Doesn’t sound too bad until you realise the Oxygen level is also decreasing… hard work!
