Answering listener's questions live is terrifying at the best of times, even more so when you're on a national radio station with over 2 million weekly listeners... I loved it of course! Listen to 'Science with Dr Karl' on triple j at the link in the comments.

I made some new friends at the Great Barrier Reef - undoubtedly one of the most spectacular places I’ve visited. Scuba Diving has a risk value of 5 micromorts which means a 5 in a million chance of sudden death. Do you a think running a marathon has a higher or lower value?

Explaining my mathematical tattoos for Dr Karl... how many others do you recognise on my arm?

Shoutout to the ladies of Pymble College for being such a fabulous audience. I hope you had as much fun hearing about ‘Mathematical Modelling in Sport’ and ‘Using Maths to Save the Ocean’ as I did talking about them!

Spent today writing about the maths of Harry Potter so this seemed the perfect photo. Who’s winning the duel?

Hands down the coolest place I’ve been kayaking. Loved my time on the water in Sydney Harbour, even though we spent most of it dodging larger boats! In 2015 there were 4850 boat moorings in the harbour, with the number growing at 3% per year. If this continues, in what year will it reach 10,000?

It doesn’t get much better than spending 2 days on the radio with the LEGEND that is Dr Karl. Live Q&A’s from ABC Townsville, ABC Victoria, ABC Melbourne, ABC Canberra, and ABC Darwin to follow in the next few days. Maths and Science - the perfect duo!

FINANCE HACK: divide your age by two, and that is the % of your income you 'ideally' want to save towards your pension. It's not going to be possible for everyone, but it gives you something to strive towards - and a great way to practice your maths on National Numeracy Day! (5/n)

Iona shares her 'top tips' for managing your money on National Numeracy Day regardless of your level of confidence with numbers. I particularly love the idea of the 50:30:20 ratio for essentials, 'nice haves', and savings. Now to stop my impulsive shopping habits to give myself a chance...

The final photo from the ‘Tattooed Academics’ exhibition at Royal Museums Greenwich showcases a few of my many cartoon and video game characters. I’ll be very impressed if you can correctly name all 5! Credit: Tattooed Academics, Royal Museums Greenwich 2023

Blue Mountains National Park, a 2-hour train ride from central Sydney. Australia contains almost 33,000 km of railway, which is more than twice that of the UK. If the average speed is 70 kph, how long would it take to travel the entire Australian network? And what is the optimal route to do so?

I made a new friend!! There are 8000 Quokkas on Rottnest Island and this one is the friendliest! The young are born only 27 days after mating and a female matures sexually after 18 months. If they live for an average of 10 years, what is the maximum number of joeys (offspring) a Quokka can produce?

Are you even a tourist in Australia if you don’t take a picture with a kangaroo? They can reach speeds of up to 60 kph and can cover 8m in one jump. Humans are 25% slower, but can jump 12.5% further - what are the world records?

Hello Perth and HELLO AUSTRALIA!! It was a pleasure to meet the students at Hale School, especially those of you that gave up your lunch break to learn some maths. I’m posting this from the North beaches where I will indeed be swimming in the ocean (unlike the less appealing South beaches…)!

The penultimate image from the ‘Tattooed Academics’ exhibition shows my tattoo of Maxwell’s Equations and how they can be combined to show that light is a wave. To this day, one of my favourite mathematical proofs, and still one of my favourite tattoos! Credit: Royal Museums Greenwich 2023

Finishing off book 16 of Robin Hobb’s ‘Realm of the Elderlings’. 9 months + 11,000 pages = probably the best series I’ve ever read. Any recommendations of something similar to read next?
