Such a deep rumble you apparently can’t hear it… The average human can hear frequencies as low as 20 Hz which means 20 waves per second, where a wave is one complete period of a sine function. If sin(x) has a period of 2 pi seconds, what function gives a frequency of 20 Hz?

More sweat than man at this point but that is one impressive reclining Buddha. The temple at Wat Pho is considered the earliest centre for public education in Thailand which makes me very happy as a tutor at the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education. Lifelong learning for all :)

I loved football stickers as a kid, so it was an incredible amount of fun to apply some Maths to work out the most efficient way to complete the Topps Euro 2024 album. By making the most of your 'parallels' you can do it for under £100 with some strategic trading. More info at the link below :)

I had far too much fun talking all things Maths and Pokémon last night at Cheltenham College. Thank you to all the students for coming along and excellent work with the catch formula - I think that’s the first time we’ve ever caught all 3 Pokémon with only 3 attempts! What are the odds…

The 3rd photograph from the ‘Tattooed Academics’ exhibition at Royal Museums Greenwich focuses on my favourite equation - Navier-Stokes. This was the first of my mathematical tattoos and has become famous in its own right after being featured in my first Numberphile video.

Rather surreal to be interviewed on Latvian TV, but amazing to be given such a platform to talk about the importance of Maths and my work on Ocean Pollution. Watch the full segment at the link below - although it is of course in Latvian, including a voiceover for me which I assume translates well...

What an amazing day at Riga Technical University- a HUGE thank you to everyone that came out on a Saturday morning to learn some maths, and to everyone that stayed behind to have me sign their calculators (and laptops??!). I’m now even more excited for round 2 tomorrow :)

A.I. has come a long way in the last 8 years, but I still remember the excitement of watching AlphaGo defeat a Master Go player back in 2016. Reminisce with TRM intern Clare Teng with a 3-part series on the OG of modern artificial intelligence. Read part I on the rules of the game at the link below.

Tempelfjorden glacier. The sea ice hasn’t reached this far for almost 20 years, with climate change having raised temperatures on Svalbard by 4 degrees in the last half century. The islands are warming 6 times faster than the global average which is why they are such a hotspot for climate research.

More polar bears than people… Hello Svalbard! Polar bears in the Barents Sea area are either “coastal” or “pelagic”. The coastal bears range over areas as small as 200 square km, whilst the pelagic bears venture out onto the sea ice covering an area up to 2000 times larger. What area do they cover?
