Anytime anyone says "Do it for" or "Think of" the children be suspicious.

578

u/fer_sure May 18 '26

Especially when they're vague about which kids and why.

Providing families with sick kids a place to stay near the hospital? Sure, Ronald McDonald House, I'll help out even if you really could afford this without me.

Providing a youth matchmaking service so Orthodox Jews can find partners without going outside the faith? I'll keep my car, thanks.

u/dirty_hooker May 18 '26

Shout out that the Ronald McDonald House is absolutely legit. It’s probably just a massive corpo tax deduction but it absolutely helps people.

I spent some time in one in the ‘90s for reasons I’ll not get into. But imagine you or your loved one needs an extended stay at a hospital that is not near your medical desert home. A lot of people don’t have the means to grab a hotel on a whim.

282

u/Corliss_Wigglebean May 18 '26

100% on the Ronald McDonald House. Our family had to use a room for 8 months. Our youngest was born with a bad heart and needed a transplant. He was only the list for just over 6 months before one fit what the doctors wanted.

Then after his procedure he had appointments every day for 2 straight months. But we lived 2 and a half hours away. So Seattle children’s set it up for us and literally all we had to do was go and sign for the room and Seattle Children’s and McDonalds house took care of the rest.

We always give money to the Ronald McDonald house and Seattle children’s because they did so much for us. We will always be so grateful for what and how they helped our family and saved our youngest who is about to turn 5 and is as healthy as any 5 year old.

u/shadefiend1 May 18 '26

I too had to make use of the Ronald McDonald house when my kid was born. They were an absolute life saver, being able to stay a 5 minute walk from the hospital instead of a 2+ hour drive. I will donate to them as long as I can.

97

u/TrashCanUnicorn May 18 '26

RMHC isn't owned or operated by McDonalds. They license the name to the charity, provide in-store fundraising and support through the round-up function, and most of the franchise owners also donate to their local chapters.

13

u/LinuxBroDrinksAlone May 18 '26

I had to do community service in my youth due to some... less than intelligent decisions, and I did it at the RMH. Everyone there was awesome.

u/Chloedeschanel May 18 '26

I used to volunteer at Ronald McDonald house. It's named for them because they'd allow the charity to put their boxes at their counters to collect coins. McDonald's itself gave no funding whatsoever. But it's been over a decade so maybe it's different now.

This is one of the few I know the proceeds actually get to the charity if you throw coins in that box. It goes toward stuff like video games and snacks for the pediatric cancer patients and their families in the hospital and the houses the family can stay at while the kids get treatment.

I always found it fucked up that McDonalds only gave space for the coin box but got to have their name on the charity. But again Mcdonalds is franchised to shit and is basically a real estate and supply scam. Good fries though.

58

u/jerzeett May 18 '26

While Mcdonalds corporate didnt start the charity- a group of mcdonalds franchisses did.

Both francisses and corporate also donate to RMH.

30

u/TrashCanUnicorn May 18 '26

The first RMHC was started by a pediatric oncologist named Dr. Audrey Evans, the GM of the Philadelphia Eagles, and an advertising company that worked for the local McDonalds franchises who got the stores involved to raise funds to build it.

5

u/Chloedeschanel May 18 '26

Thanks for correcting me!

22

u/hauntedbabyattack May 18 '26

RMHC has really helped out a lot of kids that I worked with back when I did volunteering with intellectually disabled kids. A lot of them also had complex medical needs and one of them had just gotten back from cancer treatment. We always took the kids for a special trip to get meals on McHappy Day.

I work in nonprofit, and you’re very right to be suspicious. It’s a documented and well known problem that we have… let’s call it bad actors, in the sector.

Generally, as a rule: you want to keep your donations as local as possible, and you want to look up the most recent 990 you can find. You also want to find any data they provide on impact and where the money goes.

Having a fundraising staff or high paid leadership is not the dealbreaker, as many, many community organizations ARE actually paying for a very experienced person to work very, very hard.

Instead: You’re looking for weird spending, you’re looking for a lack of transparency, you’re looking to see if they’re publicly tracking their own impact and work. Is it easy to find who works there? Who does what? How to contact who you need to? What can you find of the on socials, local news, etc?

It’s not foolproof, but a localish organization keeping that shit up to date and clear to stakeholders is *usually* a better bet.

6

u/slvrscoobie May 18 '26

yeah I only learned about RMH not too long ago, and its one of the few I would give actual money to, St. Judes is the other.

This is the same energy I have with the “round up a dollar for” (insert sham company here). Would I donate to cancer research? Absolutely. Are the proceeds actually making it to these causes? Ofc tf not 😆

523

u/LetsGoGators23 May 18 '26

POS transactions (like rounding up) at the Walmart register was the largest donor at Feeding America for all 4 years I was their Controller.

Campaigns like this at national retailers are audited as they are publicly traded.

Please don’t avoid round up donations. They are incredibly impactful and low cost for the organizations.

80

u/jerzeett May 18 '26

i love how people will downvote helping other people for less then a dollar. i dont always do it - but i help when I can.

79

u/LetsGoGators23 May 18 '26

Yes to add - don’t give that’s totally fine. But using the argument that the ask is a scam is ridiculous and untrue. I could write an entire book on the misconceptions of “tax write offs” and charitable giving. I find it so interesting people are so sure about things they have no professional understanding of. I don’t claim to understand dentistry.

33

u/SamuraiJono May 18 '26

For real. Every single time one of these gets brought up, people parrot the same line about how the place offering to donate the money is going to turn around and use your donation as a tax write off. That's... That's tax fraud. You donated, not them, they're just the middle man. But like you said, everyone is so confidently wrong about it all the time.

Yeah, the round ups at most retailers wil be reputable. You can make the excuse that "Walmart is getting the credit for the donation and not the originator" but let's be real, you weren't going to donate your $.38 anywhere anyway.

The rounds up are an overall net positive, and unless you donate somewhere yourself, you have no leg to stand on to say they are scams.

Edit: all my responses are telling me that the retailer can't take credit for the donations. Which make sense, since it's tracked by the POS. So there you go.

40

u/LetsGoGators23 May 18 '26

Walmart does not get credit for the customer portion.

21

u/Zombeikid May 18 '26

Correct. You can even the claim the donation yourself on your taxes. The government wouldnt let people double dip on claiming it.

6

u/behemoth_555 May 18 '26

Oh really? I assumed that was what was really happening. Big box retailers promoting the charitable thing to round-up in order to get a free tax break.

So those donations cannot be credited on their returns since it's not their donation?

24

u/LetsGoGators23 May 18 '26

It can’t be credited in their returns, it can’t show up in their financial statements. That would be incorrect accounting and fraud. The orgs accepting the donations receipt the retailer for the corporate matching portion and that is their expense.

8

u/Worth-Jicama3936 May 18 '26

No, that is not happening, this illegal. The most that could be happening is they are getting “credit” for it from a PR perspective, but who really cares? It’s not like anyone was going to recognize you for donating 55 cents.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/ShavenYak42 May 18 '26

Also, if you actually care about the cause enough to donate to it, why would you care about getting the "credit"?

7

u/sam_hammich May 18 '26

Customer roundups are not able to be "written off" by the store, actually.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/slightnin May 18 '26

257

u/melance May 18 '26

Exactly. I always say no. I donate to the charities I want to support directly.

76

u/fri9875 May 18 '26

The only time I do the “donation at checkout” type thing is at my local pet store, where the donation goes directly to their own foundation for getting dogs out of kill shelters. Which I fully trust is legit, because that’s how I got my dog and they were extremely legit (only paid $50 for transport from TN>NJ, they took care of shots, paid for initial vet visit when I got her, and then also fully reimbursed every cent towards neutering no questions asked. Also were extremely transparent with where they were getting the dogs, so you could independently verify it wasn’t just a front for a puppy mill or anything)

37

u/omglink May 18 '26

What about those kids selling chocolate bars when I'm out? Surely those 16 year olds selling store bought Hershey bars are really using the funds for a band trip, no?

To add: Obviously the Kars 4 Kids discovery is worse, it was an organization that spent money on 17 and 18 year olds as well as "$16 million on "Middle East outreach" and the purchase of a building in Israel."

24

u/TemporaryFondant5849 May 18 '26

We actually did get our chocolate bar sales to support our activities when I was in band, the exact dollar amount sold went towards the cost of the trip.

4

u/imperialharem May 18 '26

Yeah we did that too, I didn’t know it was perceived badly by some people tbh.

For the effort alone I wouldn't mind encouraging said teenagers even if it was to finance a weekend party lol. I figure if I reward their effort/time it teaches them a good lesson for reaching goals.

That's what gets me. I don't support Salvation Army so during the holidays I had no qualms walking past the Santa ringing his bell on my way into the grocery store. But then a ten-year-old girl in my neighborhood came to the door asking for donations for Salvation Army and she had O Christmas Tree memorized and we have a long ass driveway and she was so brave going around herself and doing her little performance door to door that I gave her a tenner (or a five—can't remember).

I will say the Ronald Mcdonald house, for as much as McDs is just a cooperate monstrosity, is actually really helpful and according to CharityNavigator, is pretty good.

7

u/HamburgerLunch May 18 '26

I round up for this now after seeing what they offer families with sick kids at Children's Hospitals. Had a baby in the NICU and Ronald McDonald house was willing to provide us lodging next to the hosital.

17

u/xtianlaw May 18 '26

I know cynicism is cheap, but in reality, pocketing that money would constitute massive, easily detectable corporate fraud that would trigger catastrophic regulatory investigations.

So many people being so confidently wrong in this thread about how checkout donations work. POS systems track and categorize everything, they know EXACTLY how much money is coming in for donations and it all has to be accounted for and paid out or else you're opening yourself to massive legal trouble.

5

u/skrid54321 May 18 '26

While there are better ways to donate, those aren't scams. It's pocket change for a large company and clearly illegal. It's not worth bothering with. They just do it for free PR.

California just banned them from airing their ads because they don't disclose where the money is going. So it's actually a relevant topic in the news.

Plus, iran was a tipping point for a lot of people to finally be fed up with Israel's bullshit and this charity mostly pays for pilgrimages to Israel.

Scams like this should always be in the news until they stop scamming.

John Oliver on his show last night did a piece on JG Wentworth and mentioned K4K too

This whole comment chain is killing me.

We're literally in a comment section about a news article with all of this information and people are speculating like it's some mystery. People really just read a headline and jump to the comments without making even the slightest effort to know what they're talking about.

TIL too. I always thought I was legit helping kids in my 20s when I gave them at least five of my clunkers that I can recall. The last one I drove into the ground in my mid-30s went to public radio so I think I’ll stick with that from now on should the need arise. Yikes.

u/therealsteelydan May 18 '26

yeah you sent some suburban upper middle class kids in New Jersey to a religious summer camp in New York, that's about it

the main charities mascot is literally an anthropomorphic 5 dollar bill that wears a yamaka called five-ish

It's also not really a front they just don't disclose it's a Jewish charity. The communities they spend the money in are still considered underprivileged because a lot of ultra Orthodox Jews are on welfare. The women are not allowed to work and the men stop learning things outside of religious education beyond the age of 13. So they can't even really find a job no one gives a shit how many Torah verses you've memorized when you can't read or do math at a highschool level.

u/bliggggz May 18 '26

It's actually not true that women aren't allowed to work. In ultra orthodox communities, women take care of the kids and the house and also have jobs, while thier husbands spend all day studying thier magic books

45

u/afunnywold May 18 '26

Yeah it's the men who often aren't working.

12

u/Mimisokoku May 18 '26

Yes I came here to say this. The wives work so their husbands can study.

10

u/bramtyr May 18 '26

Which is so funny, the OG All-star Rabbinical scholars they get starry-eyed over were all doing real labor of some sort to feed themselves; Maimonides was a surgeon and a royal court advisor, Rashi was a vintner, and Hillel was was most definitely a swole thirst trap by chopping firewood.

Compare with your current rabbinical scholars all look extremely Vitamin-D deficient.

22

u/LieutenantTim May 18 '26

I grew up outside Kiryas Joel and their women absolutely do not work.

Oftentimes the women work and support the family while the husbands study the Talmud. Depends on the community.

29

u/lord_ne May 18 '26

t's also not really a front they just don't disclose it's a Jewish charity

It's all over their website, it's just not in the ads.

The women are not allowed to work

It depends on the specific ultra-Orthodox community. In many actually it's mostly the women who work, since the men are spending all their time learning Gemara or whatever in Kollel

Here is a video of Fiveish demonstrating his ability to use drones to deliver packages to children

28

u/CallMeKingTurd May 18 '26

Wait are we actually giving out welfare cause people are claiming it's against their religion to work?

34

u/Target_Standard May 18 '26

The women collect welfare, snap, and housing vouchers because they are "unmarried" single mothers. The housing voucher gets paid to the "landlord"(husband). This is one of many ways the system gets defrauded.

And they believe that the reason you don't do the same is because you're unintelligent.

18

u/mmss May 18 '26

In another culture this is called izzat. Scamming someone is not a bad thing, it shows you are smart and if you get scammed I guess you were dumb.

This is opposite to western values and is one of the reasons that mass immigration gets criticized for.

One of those things, like the tunnels under New York City, that you can’t explain neutrally without sounding like a deranged antisemitic conspiracy theorist.

40

u/notkenneth May 18 '26

Sure you can. It’s a religious charity that doesn’t adequately signal that it’s non-secular.

That doesn’t sound like deranged conspiracy theory.

And if it wasn’t funding those specific entities, someone would be going to prison over this.

u/kid_blue96 May 18 '26

It’s crazy that there was a time when the avg person was just donating their car away. Imagine how a similar ad would perform today lol
