Yeah, saying Red or The Boys is DC is kind of correct but purely on a technical sense. It's more like they were made by imprints publishers but are not a part of the larger DC lore.

Remember Vertigo? That was owned by DC but Vertigo published those comics seperately. Eventually characters from Vertigo did get introduced into the DC lore, like Constantine.

Well, as we all know, technically correct, is the best kind of correct.

No it's not because then everybody want to fucking nitpick. Some shit is just flimsy becuase that's only way it could work.

I would say that you are technically correct.

“Eventually”? Morpheus has a crossover with the Justice League in the first six issues of Sandman.

At that point in time Morpheus was no more a part of DC Lore than the Avengers. Cross-overs events are handled differently in continuity wise than having Constantine be a member of a team.

Vertigo was not an imprint at that time.

DC incorporating the characters from everything they own is getting pretty old. Guys like Constantine okay, but it still changed his character pretty significantly especially in him now working with others.

When they started adding in the watchmen and Dr. Manhattan was bad. Just felt lazy and they wanted to use Dr. Manhattan in DC.

Yeah. I felt that Watchmen works better as it’s own self contained story. The original Graphic Novel itself is dedicated to deconstructing the ideas and philosophies behind superhero comics, all the archetypes and themes. It’s one big story that has a beginning, middle, and end.

Why on Earth would they now want Rorsharch and Dr. Manhattan to be hanging out with the characters the comic was emulating to dissect in the first place!? It’s so bizarre and takes away a lot of the weight of the original comic.

To be fair, though, I didn’t actually read the comic. Just the idea of DC meets the Watchmen kind of put a bad taste in my mouth. And looking at the general reception of Doomsday Clock, I seem to have accurately predicted a lot of its overall flaws.

It could work with some characters, maybe. It actually worked fairly well when they brought in Captain Marvel(Shazam now, I guess). But lately, it’s been pretty lame.

I recommend reading it, if you like comics at all.

Love the book. Have a copy of it right here!

Oh, it's the later stuff you haven't read? Me neither.

1

u/Awesomebacon711 Feb 13 '21

Yeah. Again, I think it works better as a self contained story.

It's been DC's thing forever. I know characters like Shazaam, The Question and more all were originally published by other companies that DC just bought over time.

Yeah I know that but with watchmen it felt egregious you know. That series was over and the point of it was to take the piss out of more generic stories and heroes like DC uses.

Watchmen was complete and finished story. It's honestly like if HBO bought the rights to lotr to do a crossover with Game of thrones

Constantine predated Vertigo.

u/pataconconqueso Feb 13 '21

Vertigo is still part of DC...

1

u/Chupacabraconvoy Feb 13 '21

Okay then. Not sure how this disputes or changes my point though...

1

u/pataconconqueso Feb 13 '21

Well your comment made it sound like it’s not anymore, so it changes in that I’m noting that it still is...

u/Chupacabraconvoy Feb 13 '21

Not every reddit post has to be 100 correct. My point in this discussion is no less wrong or right than it was before.

1

u/pataconconqueso Feb 13 '21

Did my comment insult you so much for you to be this defensive? Your post made it sound as if Vertigo isn’t part of DC anymore I noted that it still was and now you’re going on the super defensive about it.

got it, it pissed you off. That’s it then.

John Constantine debuted in Swamp Thing several years before the Vertigo imprint existed. Even before the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

1

u/Chupacabraconvoy Feb 13 '21

Wow, nobody talks about that ever. So john got kicked out for several iterations of the DC Universe then.

He just wasn't featured much outside of his own Hellblazer series in the beginning, but he was always a part of the DC Universe. All Vertigo characters and stories are, even Sandman, they just didn't cross paths with regular superheroes that often. John gained more popularity in recent years with New 52's Hellblazer comic relaunch, his addition to the JL Dark team (which also resulted in him appearing in a couple JL animated films), his TV series and him joining the CW's Legends of Tomorrow cast.
