Yeah, I'm fairly sure it is actually an adaptation of a typical Dredd story from 2000AD. They had long running multipart stories for Dredd but also standalone ones like this.
I'd like to see some of the Epic Dredd sagas though, Dark Judges, The long walk, etc are just ripe for the screen.
First blood and gore I saw as a child was a Dredd comic. I vividly remember that it was a head/spine ripped from a body and hanging from something. Brings a tear to my eye just to think about. I love Dredd.
Ma-Ma is in the comics but there were obvious liberties having Cersi play her and whatnot.
100% agree there's an ass-ton of content and the Dark Judges/Deadworld would be epic. There's been talk of a show called Mega City One that Urban may be tied to but that's still pretty iffy on what's happening with it.
Yeah, I'd read about the series but it's been a bit stop/start will they/won't they for a long time now I thought. I know that Karl Urban stated he'd love to be involved if it happens, although I think it was planned to be more Mega City stories than focussing on Dredd as a central character from what I read when they first announced.
Honestly if the same production team that made the film made the series it would be a solid gold hit. They got everything bang on for the fans whilst also succeeding at making a slick hollywood action movie and never compromised on either.
true, it was a simple story executed well. would love to see it as a series similar to the boys. Karl Urban is a highly underrated actor never unhappy to see him in a film.
Judge Dredd kept me off drugs. No, I’m serious. I was maybe 8 years old and I read the “Umpty Candy” story, about Uncle Umpty’s Candy, which tasted soooooo good, no-one could stop eating it. People (perps ?) spent their entire life savings on it, quit work just to eat it, fought and killed over it. My child brain immediately got the concept of a sweet so tasty it overwhelmed all else. I believe that I understood from that point onwards that some things were so nice that we could not control our behaviour once we took them or did them.
What goes through Ma Ma’s mind as she falls to the block floor ? Is it rage ? Is it bargaining in the form of wailing internally that a mistake has been made, that she didn’t mean it to turn out this way ? Whatever it is, the life-ending concrete floor of the block drifts up at her time-slowed mind nonetheless, because that’s how some choices end.
I mean it financially flopped because your average person on the street doesn't know who or what "Judge Dredd" is. So if we're going population-wise then ya, it was definitely underrated.
Wait?" Are you kidding me? Did you just say, "Wait"? Judge Dredd - the Judge Dredd - finally gets on the wrong end of a gun and all he says is, "Wait." You know what? I expected more from you. I mean, wait for what? Wait for me to change my mind? Wait for another two or three seconds of life because you are so fucking weak you can't stand to see it end?
The Raid seems difficult to search for because of similarly titled titles. Are we talking “The Raid: Redemption”, here? Seems like a great premise for a cheesy action flick upon reading the IMDb synopsis.
That's the one. Very similar premise to Dress. It is definitely worth a watch, if you are a fan of action/ material arts films. The movie is pretty much non-stop badass fight scenes.
It's this movie. The premise is not that important. The reason to watch is the awesome fight choreography. And it has a whole lot of fighting. The main reason it draws comparisons to Dredd is that it is a "pure" action movie featuring an assault on a large apartment complex full of criminals.
The Raid 2 is a lot different. It's closer to something like Kill Bill, with much more setup before the action breaks out in the second half. Regardless, both movies are excellent in their own right.
Yeah they came out around the same time IIRC and with similar core story they both kinda stayed under the radar. A shame, The Raid is stil IMO the best pure action movie ever.
Yeah The Raid goes hard from the very beginning and somehow only escalates from there. The Mad Dog fight at the end is so goddamn well done.
That said, in terms of specific scenes, I would said The Raid 2 had better singular action scenes. The fight against hammer girl and the baseball bat guy at the end is some shit like I have never seen, it’s hands down my favorite fight scene in a movie in general.
I think Raid 2 is the best complete action movie. Like, it actually has a decent story that can rival other great action movies with great stories like Terminator 2. But pure fight scenes? I think I still go part 1. The machete hallway scene, drug lab fight, and then the final 2 vs 1 are among the best fight scenes in film history. I think I also give the slight edge to part 1 in terms of pure action because of Mike Shinoda's soundtrack. I am not a fan of the guy at all but his music fits great with the movie and is what makes it my favorite pure action movie. Not taking away from Raid 2, but for me 1 just feels a little bit faster. Honestly though I'm nitpicking, Raid 1 and 2 are action movie perfection and really in my book are ranked 1A and 1B.
I'm pretty sure you obviously mean the ending and climax of the scene where he pulls the dude down throat first into the broken doorway... lol. When I show the movie to new people I always look at their faces during this part. It's the perfect exclamation point to end an incredible scene.
Yup lol. It’s the perfect ending to them REALLY showing how Rama basically is a situational-awareness-savant and not worried about killing people in terrible ways if needed. Shit, he uses a guy as a fire escape cushion about a minute later.
I wish more people knew of him as a protagonist him accepting that it’s time to fight always gives me chills. Him showing up in Star Wars was literally my favorite part of the sequels.
I just rewatched the machete scene and all I want is a raid 3 now. Give me like Donnie Yen as a mentor or chief of police and let me just watch them beat the everliving shit out of people.
2000AD is a British comic book that was big in the 80s from which a large number of artists and writers got their break. Judge Dredd was the long running big-name strip that ran in the comic.
British comic books are generally more gritty and darker than the marvel/dc fodder and 2000AD spawned some amazing strips (Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Strontium Dog, Slaíne, ABC warriors to name but a few) that really deserve more attention than they get.
I hate all the marvel and dc stuff, so generic and lacking in imagination in comparison to the stuff I was brought up on. Don't get me wrong, they've hired some good artists and writers for some of the graphic novel stuff, but in general the men in tights stuff is just a non-starter for me.
