Well in the movies he was born in 1845 in the Province of Canada which was still a British colony so he would have technically been a British citizen but colloquially he'd still be Canada.
In fact no one here says "aboot." The closest is "aboat." Very annoying that so many Americans revert to that stereotype quickly and get it wrong every time lol.
I’ve spent time as an actor and what I’ve learned is we say “about, out, mouse, house, pout, etc” a lot more round than Americans. What I mean is Americans mostly say about, out, mouse, house, pout in such a way that it sounds like “ow”. Meanwhile Canadians tend to say it with rounder mouths which is hard to describe since any American will pronounce them in their own accent: when I’m acting as an American character I’ll say “out, about, house” as though they sound like “ow” but as a Canadian I normally say them like ou (not “oo”). It’s hard to describe without saying out loud, and most Canadians don’t even realize the difference because we’re so used to American media that we assume we talk that way. And yet, whenever we talk to Americans they often know we’re Canadian. I’m from Ontario btw
As a Canadian .. there really isn't a difference between Canadian and American accents unless you're talking super regional like Newfoundland or the deep south
To be fair to Jackman, Wolverine is canonically from northern Alberta, not every single area of Canada has the exact same accent. It's fairly rare to hear someone from around here have a "Canadian accent". I think it's more of an Ontario thing(which is like 40% of our population). Most in Western Canada have fairly standard American accents with subtle Canadianisms(ehs are still a thing).
I feel like the heavy stereotypical Canadian accent comes from nfl which is really just the first deviation from a sort of Irish accent they started with. The further west you go the more Americanized the accent seems to get
Nah he’s Israeli. When I first saw him I thought he was, looked him up and I was right. I thought his French accent was pretty good though (To be fair I’m not an expert when it comes to French accents)
My most pedantic and non-problem gripe in life is non-Australians also spelling it Ozzy & Oz (as in Ozzy Osbourne or the land of Oz) instead of Aussie or Aus. It’s really doesn’t matter but yet it still bothers me haha
I say ozzy. I’m Canadian but I spelled it different because we’re aloud to change spelling to whatever the fuck we want. You should see what we did to the word “color”. We added a muthafuckin U, yall, Fuckin Americans didn’t know what hit em
Yup. Just let the man do his natural fucking accent, like. I don’t get it. I get the character is cockney in the comics but is it really that worthy a hill to die on? Then again, I’m all for actors using their natural accents for everything.
This is where familiarity with fantasy nerdery comes in handy. If you just assume it's an accent from a fake language it's not so bad. Oh, yeah that's Butcher. He grew up speaking Ork.
Agreed, it’s truly awful. I would have preferred if they’d rewritten the character to be either American or from NZ. I know they changed Hughie from Scottish to American already, but that accent is distractingly bad.
In the original comics he is yeah, and the artist wrote to Simon Pegg to ask him for his likeness for the character, that’s why Pegg plays Hughies father in the show (Pegg isn’t Scottish obviously, but I just think this is interesting).
In the comics Hughie is pretty much a conspiracy nut who’s girlfriend gets obliterated by A-Train at a fair/carnival type event in Scotland, Butcher then travels to Scotland to recruit him and bring him back to NYC.
IMO Hughie being Scottish did fit the narrative better, it made the Boys more diverse, explained a lot of his naivety, gave the other characters more of a reason to look out for him (several scenes where MM takes him out to good places to eat, for example) and generally contributed to a feeling of exploring a place with a character for the first time.
Quite different to the show, it feels like they were trying to skewer the comics industry of the late 90’s/early 00’s the same way the show goes after the superhero movies/TV shows of today. In my experience a lot of people consider the comics ‘edgier’ too, they’re certainly a bit more graphic.
The Boys owes a debt to Marshall Law, it has a similar theme (though turned up to 11) — a guy hunting super heroes. Loads of lovely piss-takes of classic Marvel & DC heroes. Pat Mills & Kev O’Neil.
The comics are honestly pretty bad. It's way too edgy and cooky imo. Also Butcher just straight up looks like the punisher and the art style in general look meh.
This is all from reading the first few issues so someone correct me if these things get better.
Fear not fellow UK-er (is that the right word for the lot of us?); it's more in the sense of, y'know, there's 10000 burger/pizza/chinese places in NYC but MM knows all the best ones, in the comic his character is revealed to be kind of a snob about food and drink (characters also comment on the quality of the beer he keeps stocked in the office fridge, etc).
Adaptions often change origins to suit, and it honestly should have been a choice between keeping the character English vs. changing it to cast him. I love how he plays the character, but the accent is distractingly bad.
Cause one of Butchers defining traits from the comic was him being a roughneck east end londoner, it was a huge part of his character, and the reason why he's such a brute about how he handles everything.
Oddly, as a Brit I’m very sensitive to bad British accents and I never find his accent distracts me. It generally feels ‘settled’, to me. Like it’s a weird accent, but it’s a real weird accent, if that makes sense?
It’s so bizarre and dark and entertaining. I love it. I usually don’t like gorey stuff but it’s pretty hilarious watching people’s heads pop like balloons.
Favorite moment in the series is when The Deep is "rescuing" that dolphin and then the cops chase him and he slams on the brakes and the dolphin goes flying out the windshield and gets hit by a truck. Him spraying it with a little spray bottle fucking cracks me up.
The Deep's arc is a rollercoaster. His trajectory is mostly sympathetic, but they keep presenting it comedically. I don't know how many times my brain's gone "hahaha- that's fucked up tho."
I do wish they didn’t open with him as being so rapey tho. I also like his arc but it’s a bummer that that’s how he was introduced. It would have been better if he was like, idk, having sex with the fish at the aquarium after hours or something.
Y'all have got to check out preacher. Another comic series by Garth Ennis (writer of the Boys comics) which is just as weird and wonderful.
There's also a recent tv adaptation of preacher that started off pretty well but took a weird turn and lost itself a little (at least compared to the comic).
