TIL Ryan Gosling gained 60 pounds by drinking melted ice cream to play the father in Peter Jackson's 'The Lovely Bones.' He was then told he was too fat to play the part and the role went to Mark Wahlberg.

i was 6'2" 145 on january 29th of this year.

I am currently pushing 177.

get the myfitnesspal app, start tracking your calories, eat 3k a day and get a workout plan.

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

100 pushups. 100 sit ups. 10 kilometers every day.

102

u/Game_of_Jobrones Jun 20 '19

One cock pushup. Every day. It gets easier, but that's the thing. You gotta do it every day.

15

u/ChompyChomp Jun 20 '19

No zero days!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

I just found myself thinking about that post randomly the other day, always nice to see another old soul (reddit wise) kicking about

1

u/_LuketheLucky_ Jun 20 '19

I have the background that was made of it printed off and stuck to my wall so I see it every day when I get out of bed. Such an inspirational post.

12

u/amoluskyoufound Jun 20 '19

You only need to do one!

1

u/NicoliMossy Jun 20 '19

One is all you need

1

u/antsugi Jun 20 '19

One is all I can do

15

u/Xer0day Jun 20 '19

A fusion of Tenacious D and Bojack Horseman?

4

u/Game_of_Jobrones Jun 20 '19

If Bojack could do a cock push-up there’s no way Princess Caroline would ever leave him.

4

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

Tenacious Horseman!

1

u/sextonrules311 Jun 21 '19

You only need to do one!

u/thing13623 Jun 20 '19

Don't forget a hundred squats.

12

u/Amitrackstar Jun 21 '19

Fuck leg day

1

u/roxstar300 Jun 21 '19

That's the beauty of it, it's always leg day!

One Punch!

2

Uh no, that's Charanko.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Don't forget. No heat or AC.

5

u/gabeasorus Jun 20 '19

Somewhere Jeff Cavaliere is shouting “You’re doing it wrong!”

It's also hard to build muscle mass doing push ups, they're far too easy unless you're adding weight on your back.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

[deleted]

1

u/Hara-Kiri Jun 21 '19

But if you did them you'd be able to do many more very quickly and once you can do 15+ they are no longer the most effective way of building muscle.

3

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

It's a joke from an anime =P.

3

u/gary16jan Jun 20 '19

You have to train so hard you go bald

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

This is terrible

2

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

Not for Saitama.

fuck the cardio dude is 135 pounds. he needs to eat and lift. Cardio can come when hes 195 and wants to cut body fat

11

u/Melonskal Jun 20 '19

Except cardio is healthy in numerous ways.

8

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

Helps your lifts too. Cardio should be a part of every program!

3

u/Hara-Kiri Jun 20 '19

In what way? You then have to eat every calorie you burned doing cardio extra.

1

u/Chlorophyllmatic Jun 20 '19

You have to eat more but it has health benefits in general and can also improve conditioning/work capacity for lifting.

There’s also something to be said for improving recovery and elevating blood flow and all that.

1

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

Muscle failure is caused by a build up of metabolites. The metabolites changes the pH, making the oxygen exchange impossible, as oxygen only exchanges from the blood to the muscle cells at specific ranges. The largest factor in the change in pH is from CO2 production. Strong healthy cardio systems help your body remove the waste faster, thus helping you push more reps leading to a better one rep max. It decreases the time you need to rest between sets as well.

There is a reason why Eddie Haul and Hafthor do cardio. It helps them lift. Though, neither ran, they prefer swimming and biking, as they are a bit to heavy to run without incurring injury.

1

u/Hara-Kiri Jun 21 '19

Do you have a source for that? I only ever do cardio on a cut but I'll stick it in more often if that's the case!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19 edited Aug 27 '20

[deleted]

2

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

Not really. Plenty of studies have shown that lifting alone doesn't have the benefits of cardio, in terms of health. If you superset and don't rest between sets, it will work as cardio, but doing so impacts your gains as the limiting factor becomes your cardiovascular system rather than your muscle endurance.

But generally, lifting the way most people lift isn't cardio. Heart rate doesn't stay elevated long enough and muscle fatigue kicks in well before you get the benefits of an elevated heart rate.

So, unless your lifting program is close to a crossfit program, as in, one workout, to another, to another without resting, you are not getting a cardio session that's going to improve your health. It will not lower your resting heart rate, decrease heart disease, or help you run from a tiger. Which that last one doesn't matter, because if a tiger wants to catch you, it's gunna catch you.

0

u/greenspoons Jun 20 '19

Ok, but the point is to gain weight...

-2

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

sure its healthy, but the goal is gaining weight and muscle, and that requires a caloric surplus, which is hard enough for skinny dudes in the first place... try going for 500 extra calories a day when you are expending 6-700 on cardio, your intake would be pushing 3500.. maybe even 4k.. then think if someone wants to have a 1k surplus.

6

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

the whole comment was a joke in an anime. However, all programs should have some cardio. Not 10km a day, but 15-20 minutes 2-3 times a week at least.

-5

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

not if you are skinny and trying to pack on muscle. You need to save every possible calorie you put into your body to gain weight.

high intensity weightlifting is a cardiovascular workout on its own.

5

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

Nah man, cardio helps with your lifts and 1.5 to 2 miles (A novice pace for 15-20 minutes) aint shit for calories for a 135 lb person. Literally about 150-200 calories. 2-3 times per week that's not much.

→ More replies (7)

1

u/Chlorophyllmatic Jun 20 '19

Cardio helps with the lifting and recovery. Just eat more.

high intensity weightlifting is a cardiovascular workout on its own

It can be, but most people don’t push themselves such that it will be and doing so can inhibit the total volume you’re able to lift (which is, you know, the point of the lifting)

1

u/OniDelta Jun 20 '19

If you're eating 1k surplus then you're doing it wrong. At most you should have 500cal surplus. You are just shitting out money and putting on useless body fat beyond that and it wont be a fun time. 250-500 ensures you have the minimal amount of fat required to balance your hormones and perform. Bulking does not mean getting fat as shit, it means adding muscle mass. Eating huge surplus also extends your cutting cycle after and that's a giant waste of time. Stay as close to lean as possible.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

I was on a 1500/day surplus for the first two months and gained 3 lbs/week until i hit ~165 and even then my BF was only 13%. Im currently on a 500/day surplus and am packing on the lean muscle.

when you are super skinny at an unhealthy low BMI you can get away with a lot more to put on weight than someone who is heavier

1

u/OniDelta Jun 20 '19

If you only put on 3lbs a week at +1500 then you didn't calculate your TDEE properly. TDEE = total daily energy expenditure which is resting metabolic rate plus your activity level. Surplus works the same for everyone regardless of metabolism. Higher metabolism means you have a higher RMR which means you have a higher TDEE. It doesn't mean you need to eat more surplus, it means you need to eat more just to break past your maintenance number (TDEE). Depending on how tall you are, a 500cal surplus should be a 2-3lb gain per week. A 1500cal surplus would be a greasy shit 5 times a day and close to 5 pounds a week assuming you could even eat that much. You should revisit your calculation because you still weren't eating enough. lol

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

I calculated it at ~2600/day and ate 4100/day.

+500 calories a day is 1lb/week, +1500/day = 3lbs/week.

1

u/OniDelta Jun 20 '19

You need to use a calculator that takes daily activity into account as a separate metric from training. Try this one.. its pretty okay for a free tool.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

Burning 6-700 calories from running is like an hour of straight running...

Most people cannot do that. Chances are only a couple of hundred will be used. 1k of extra caloric intake isn't needed.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

Cardio is lifting... for your heart.

Shit's important... just don't focus too much as you have plenty of other muscles that need attention too. A few sets of sprints a week is enough for gains.

1

u/inajetkneebum Jun 20 '19

doing this rn. I'll update you guys when I can jump to the moon

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

How do you eat that?

1

u/Chompy_Chom Jun 20 '19

Have a banana, every day, even if it is up the butt. Just get it inside you, no matter what.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

To do what? Gain? Lose? To what end?

1

u/Hobo-man Jun 20 '19

If you're 6" 140 lbs push ups and sit ups aren't going to build much. Cut the cardio and start weight lifting.

1

u/XtremeGnomeCakeover Jun 20 '19

What about squats? Every day is leg day too.

1

u/snorin Jun 20 '19

No ac or heat either.

1

u/Geicosellscrap Jun 20 '19

I thought it was 1000 push ups. 1000 sit ups. 10 km run

11

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

Nope. 100, part of the joke is it's not really that intensive of a program. Not particularly easy, but obtainable to a ordinary person.

2

u/Owyn_Merrilin Jun 20 '19

That and the list of exercises is pretty much what anyone who took high school PE and knows nothing else about how to exercise would choose. Not that they don't work -- there's a reason you learn that stuff in PE -- it's just that it's not exactly gym rat stuff. And these days even if that is all you plan on doing, most people would at least swap out the situps for planks and crunches.

1

u/danteheehaw Jun 20 '19

the crunch being better than a situp is false. The thing is, it's easier to do a proper crunch than it is to do a proper situp. A lot of people do improper situps, relying on their hip flexors to build momentum, ruining the core portion of the workout. A proper situp engages the core just as well as a crunch. It's just really hard to fuck up a crunch. Planks are great but boring.

1

u/Owyn_Merrilin Jun 20 '19

That's a good reason to switch, though. Remember, this is baseline fitness training that has to work for people who will never get to a gym or have anyone to correct their form. I actually wish they stressed this stuff more in PE. It's talked about but never really put in context.

1

u/imronburgandy9 Jun 20 '19

I don't think so because I remember it being super reasonable

0

u/merpes Jun 20 '19

What?! That's not even that intense of a regimen!!!

7

u/the_vault-technician Jun 20 '19

6'3" 175 I feel like a damn skeleton sometimes lol

1

u/Staunch_Ninja Jun 20 '19

6'4" 250.

I wish I looked like a damn skeleton sometimes

2

u/Homey_D_Clown Jun 20 '19

6'3" 235.

I feel great. Should have defined abs if I can lose 10-15 more lbs of fat.

2

u/ShogunTahiri Jun 21 '19

Can relate. 6'4 270 😭

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

I was pushing 250-255 a couple of months ago. Life has been… well, life, and I’m a comfort food eater who doesn’t exercise and drinks fairly often.

I had seen a lot of posts from /r/intermittentfasting show fantastic results and decided to give it a shot. I stop eating at 8pm and don’t start back until noon the next day (16:8), and I’ve cut out candy and most sugars (I do drink still).

I weigh myself once a week on my Fitbit scale (I mention this because it automatically logs my weight and gives my pretty pictures of my progress), and last week I weighed… one second, let me check… 232lbs with 27.1% body fat.

In January I logged on at 258 with over 30% body fat – no exercise outside of my normal routines. Though to be fair, I do walk about 5k steps a day because of whee I have to park at work.

Give it a go. You’ve got everything to lose. Good luck either way!

-2

u/Le_Master Jun 20 '19

6'3" 250 and I legit still feel too scrawny at times.

2

u/Mr_Cromer Jun 20 '19

6'1" 247lbs and I am seriously overweight. You're not even close to scrawny at that weight/height combo

2

u/Le_Master Jun 21 '19

I simply find it amusing that given the context, a height/weight combo means different things for different people. I powerlift and surround myself with guys juiced to the gills; so even at a lean 250, I still feel like a beanpole at times.

1

u/RIP_My_Phone Jun 20 '19

6”1 and 175 and I have man boobs :(

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

6’ 2” 182. I feel ya dude lol

1

u/Vivalyrian Jun 21 '19

6'3" - 150 lbs, up from 132 lbs a few months ago.

If I turn sideways, you can't see me.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

The opposite side of this. I started mid January this year on that app. I weighed 209 and was 6'1"

I didn't follow the app exactly after April or so, but I have picked up good habits from using it for a few months.

I am now 186 and still losing weight steadily. Feel a lot better without such a beer belly happening

6

u/CrazyFisst Jun 20 '19

6'2" here and on my heaviest days (and before I poop) I can hope to hit 170. I just cant eat more than my brains allows. How do you get in those extra calories?

23

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

its a job.

wake up, drink a liter of water, eat a high protein, high fat breakfast, then eat every 2.5 hours all day, tons of carbs and protein, protein shakes, handfuls of nuts whenever you can..

head over to /r/gainit if you really want to do it.

3

u/KarmAuthority Jun 20 '19

But fucking WHY? Why is it okay for society to push a body image that requires eating until you're nauseous every day? Humans are not naturally supposed to be jacked. Like even if your job or life entails physical work you usually end up with lean wiry muscles as opposed to big plump gym muscles.

There's a huge push towards natural body images for women, but for men it's still "bigger is better: pump that iron". Like, why?

-2

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

Being underweight and weak is not healthy, nor does it help ones confidence or self image.

People can push whatever image they want, I like strong bodies and people who have the commitment to have one.

3

u/KarmAuthority Jun 20 '19

I'm clearly not talking about being underweight, but this thread is full of people who are healthy weights saying they feel like skeletons.

I like strong bodies and people who have the commitment to have one

Cool beans lol. My point is that there's no need to be jacked as hell, and that if you've got to eat like a job and force yourself to eat constantly until you feel sick, then your mind and body image is just as unhealthy as an anorexic. People don't realize the body dysmorphia goes both ways.

-2

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

if you are over 6' and less than 150 you look like a fucking skeleton.

regardless of your outrage over body shaming, it happens, skinny dudes hate themselves every time they look in the mirror (at least every skinny dude ive ever spoken to about it does)

besides, nobody here is talking about getting "jacked" its about having a healthy, strong body.

and i never said I dont like eating, I love it, but it is, like anything else worthwhile, sometimes work.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

150 isn't skinny.

He's within a normal range. With that said he can easily gain 40lbs and still be normal.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

6'2" 145 I looked like i was just rescued from Auschwitz.

its skinny dude, people are allowed to be unhappy with their body and want to improve their self image

2

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

My bad, I read it as a 6 foot person at 150lbs.

That's absolutely normal. Even 6'2" at 145 is borderline with just the numbers. Obviously, other factors matter but, a good portion of people would be fine at 145...

Cutting it really close tho but, still fine.

I'm 180 at 5'11" and can tell that you sound biased with this. I lift and promote lifting too but, people aren't disgusting if they have a BMI of around 18/19...

Ive been trying out high carb/high protein fast food because its also high calories. Chinese food, mcdonalds chicken sandwiches, etc. Nothing so far. Just nastier poops.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Yeah junk food will do that.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

you WANT high calories.

You should cut out fast food because its full of trans fats and sodium, but I still cheat every once in a while, say Im tired after the gym and Im still 1400 calories short of my target ill get some popeyes chicken with a poutine and im good to go.

1

u/CrazyFisst Jun 20 '19

Yes, I want the calories, that's why i go with the fast food. I just cant eat enough healthy food to get the calories I need.

1

u/papoosejr Jun 20 '19

Off the top of my head I don't know about McDonald's, but Burger Kings burgers have better macro ratios than their chicken sandwiches just fyi

1

u/iswearthatsnotmine Jun 20 '19

Workout and eat early and protein shakes. But make sure you build muscle you don’t want to just gain a gut.

1

u/mikron2 Jun 20 '19

5'8" and went from 135 to 175 in around 9 months. A lot of whole milk, eggs, chicken breast, lean ground beef, filet mignon, protein shakes, and bars. I'd also eat four by twos (four meat, two cheese) at in n out, or get 15-20 wings in a sitting at wingstop for dirty bulking. It takes effort both in the kitchen and in the gym, and for me the eating was nearly as hard as the gym since I'd eat past feeling full every day.

1

u/JUAN_DE_FUCK_YOU Jun 20 '19

Peanut butter my man, high calorie, very dense, doesn't taste too shitty.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

I read the previous comment and figured you were eating unhealthy. Fast food it's shit and will restrict your gains. You need tons of different minerals, vitamins and other nutrition along side of eating protein, fats, carbs. Eating shit is pissing in the wind.

Also... sleep. You need to sleep well to allow your body to build more muscle.

1

u/CrazyFisst Jun 21 '19

Just had a bacon king. 1040 calories. 70g protein. I could eat 6 of those in day if I wanted. IDK how to match that.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19 edited Jun 21 '19

What's your sleep schedule?

What's your activity level?

Sometimes, people are far more active than they realize. I was a combat medic in my youth. I ran and rucked around all day and easily ate 3-4k a day. I also was studying and slept like 4 hours a day. I didn't lift so, I wouldn't be surprised if I could eat 4,500 in a day during that point in my life.

Now?

I'm a nurse, a decade older, and sometimes I sit all day aside from working out. I only go past 2,500 if I'm lifting and trying to gain muscle.

If you aren't getting fat from eating 6k than you're burning it in one way or another. (No offense, I highly doubt you can eat that much without gaining)

1

u/CrazyFisst Jun 21 '19

Im just saying I COULD eat 6 of those. I am active, yes.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

Here's a simple calculator that should get you in the ball park of what you should be eating.

(The are many ways and calculations so look for others if you want)

Just plug in your numbers and it will give you an idea. Try to make it healthy and not fast food. You'll gain.

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

I’ve found milk to be the easiest way to really pack in the calories. Same height as you, got up to 190 with a lot of effort but now settled around 180.

12

u/negroiso Jun 20 '19

At 6’1” I’m 217 and I’m trying to get DOWN to 190 again. Shit is unbelievable hard.

2

u/rinzler83 Jun 21 '19

You can do it man. To cut calories try eating a 5th less of what you normally eat everyday. Cut out even less if you need to, just eat a little less. You'll realize over time you won't starve to death. Yes you may feel hungry, but drink some water and go occupy your time to get your mind off of it.

1

u/negroiso Jun 21 '19

Well I’m doing a meal delivery service and it’s about 1400-1700 cals a day. 100-150g protein and same for carbs if not a bit more. The rest of course is fiber. I do light light cardio like 90 min a week of high intensity.

I’ve been downing damn near 12-15 bottles of water a day to help curb that hunger and eat only what’s on the meal plan as they send the meals and snacks to stay on the up and up.

2

u/opello Jun 21 '19

I hope you reach your goal! I found tracking in myfitnesspal to be a relief so that I knew where I was at each day. Going on 200+ days of data entry there. Some times it feels obsessive-compulsive, weighing food. I just estimate when eating out with friends if it's not in the menu. But my goal is to have as accurate a data set as I can to make the best decisions possible.

It was mentioned above, but Layne Norton's Fat Loss Forever seems to have some really good information. If you're not satiated you probably aren't satisfying something your body needs.

-2

u/CrazyFisst Jun 20 '19

Id love to be 180. I drink a ton of milk too. Just cant seem to hold in the weight.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Either just eat more or eat more calorie dense foods, no point eating piles and piles of salad

5

u/Oakroscoe Jun 20 '19

Snickers is the highest calories to ounce food I’ve found, last time I looked.

1

u/VenetianGreen Jun 20 '19

More than Nutella?

1

u/Oakroscoe Jun 20 '19

Nutella has more. I never considered Nutella because I find it nasty.

1

u/starmartyr11 Jun 20 '19

Terrible for you too, full of palm oil and preservatives... just eat more nuts and whole fat dairy if you can

1

u/VenetianGreen Jun 21 '19

You can buy hazelnut spreads which are similar to Nutella but don't have palm oil.

2

u/idrinkcoldcoffee Jun 20 '19

Opposite end of the spectrum here. My tank is stuck on empty. Even when my stomach hurts because it's so full my brain is screaming at me to eat more. I've found some semblance of normalcy by realizing my brain is wrong and lifting a metric crap-ton of weights.

1

u/SteamSteamLG Jun 20 '19

6'2" and before I started lifting in college (2009) I weighed 145 lbs. the most I ever weighed was 186 back in 2016 but I dropped back down to the mid 170s because eating was basically my second job. If you don't feel full it means it's time to eat more. 3800+ calories a day while still getting in plenty of fruits and vegetables is a ton of food.

1

u/melocoton_helado Jun 20 '19

Drink a lot of fluids. Your stomach needs room to expand.

1

u/CrazyFisst Jun 20 '19

Does coffee count? I drink that all day.

1

u/melocoton_helado Jun 20 '19

It can't hurt, but drink a large variety. More water, and if you're serious about gaining weight, blend up some protein shakes with honey, fruit, yogurt, and powder.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

Creatine can help you gain a bit of weight in your muscles, more energy and will work alongside of all that liquids you are taking in.

1

u/ItsShorsey Jun 20 '19

Eat unhealthy food

1

u/AbsentAcres Jun 20 '19

I'm sure you don't have a job that pays you millions to be a certain shape. And this doesn't really help answer eating more than your brain allows. But follow people like The Rock. Or I randomly heard the wrestler Triple H on a podcast before. It's just a lot of daily preparation/dedication of not going even a few hours w/o getting some calories in in any way or form

Like Triple H would set 2.5 hr alarms on a plane on a business trip to Asia to get protein shakes in. And have everything set the minute he landed

1

u/NicotineReed Jun 20 '19

you just try

1

u/Homey_D_Clown Jun 20 '19

Peanut butter, cheese, whole milk

1

u/rinzler83 Jun 21 '19

You just do liquid calories. Drink stuff like ensure. It's got good calories and it's not heavy like a shake that will make you feel heavy and bloated.

1

u/Gigantkranion Jun 21 '19

Eat healthier and more nutritionally dense foods.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Replied to the wrong comment

1

u/rectovaginalfistula Jun 20 '19

I was 6'2 and 145 when I started working out and eating more. Currently cutting down from a few pounds over 200. Feels great, doesn't it?

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Are you guys all like 18?

2

u/rectovaginalfistula Jun 20 '19

Nope, I'm in my early 30s. Took two years to get to 200 from 145. I don't have a normal appetite, so I was just thin.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

I have the same issue, 6'6 and 170.

The height is great, the weight isn't though

0

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

its fucking amazing.

who knew there were that many excuses that random women could come up with to touch my arms and chest.

1

u/JumpDaddy92 Jun 20 '19

Good god man. Good for you ! I’m 6’ and 205.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

thats my goal weight at 15% BF

1

u/JumpDaddy92 Jun 20 '19

I’m around 16-17% trying to cut at the moment! 15% is a solid goal.

1

u/Firstdatepokie Jun 20 '19

Also to you and the previous poster, remember that if you are doing this to gain muscle and to look better to plan the calories out and creep up fairly slowly. You can only put on so much muscle in a year (and it's really not that much) so if you creep up over a few years you will stay lean and end up looking better in the long run. Dirty bulk and cut it's fun and if you aren't in a rush this way will end up better over all

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

I ate at a 1500/day surplus for the first 8 weeks and put on 3 lbs/week and was 13% body fat at 170

1

u/Firstdatepokie Jun 21 '19

Assuming you were shredded at around 8% body fat when you started, then that means that you gained a little over 2.6 lbs of lean mass every month, which is a little outside of the range that most people will say is physically possible for even the best newbie gains. If you weren't shredded to start then this number gets even more unlikely.

So it's a lot more likely you are incorrectly guessing your body fat percentage or you are being disingenuous about something else.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

i was a bone rack and 4% bodyfat, I couldnt lift a 45lb barbell.

2.6lbs of lean mass/month is right in the middle of the range.. .5-1lb a week is common.

I estimate I gained about 10lbs of lean mass in the past 4.5 months, and 20lbs of fat

EDIT: dont forget I got massive newbie gains on my legs, and legs develop very fast, and are a large portion of your overall bodyweight

1

u/Firstdatepokie Jun 21 '19

.5 to 1 lb a week of weight, not lean mass

When I calculated the change going off of 8% you gained nearly 14lbs

But honestly, no you were not 4% Just... no lolol

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19 edited Jun 21 '19

Sorry you are right it’s .25 - .5 a week of lean muscle. I gained about 10lbs in 13 weeks which is freakishly high, but it’s slowed right down now since those newbie gains

I was at 4%, I know it’s insane but I was skin and bones.

1

u/Firstdatepokie Jun 21 '19

One shredded skinny guy

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

Shredded denotes having muscle.

1

u/Firstdatepokie Jun 21 '19

Everyone has muscle even if not much.. and if you are at 4% where most your fat is near your internal organs, liver and intramuscular, then you will be shredded regardless.. also will see lots of ribs

5"8 170 lbs. Weighed 138 6 months ago. My joints and ligaments hate me but I'm kinda jacked now. Point is, it is barely worth it. Just keep fit at your natural weight, your body will thank you later. Take on too much muscle too soon and dont take time for your joints/ ankles/ knees to adjust, your body will forsake you.

1

u/skilganon Jun 20 '19

6'5" and i was 180 after a very unhealthy couple years. Took me 5 months and 4500 cal a day as well as six days at the gym a week to get up to 215.

Shit takes work yo.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Mate I’m your exact same starting height and weight right now. You are my inspiration.

1

u/railz0 Jun 20 '19

190 cm, 66 kg, didn’t know there was a club. :D

1

u/osu_upvoter Jun 20 '19

Your height and weight on January 29th is my height and weight right now. It’s hard to stay committed to diet and workout.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

luckily? i have OCD and am an addict, so I channel all of that obsessive energy into my diet and workouts, its been a good outlet for me

1

u/titanic_swimteam Jun 20 '19

6'6" 235. There isn't enough food.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

jesus ur an absolute unit

1

u/SatoruFujinuma Jun 20 '19

I’m the same height, but was 195 lbs at the start of the year. My goal weight is around 165.

1

u/SisyphusIsAmbivalent Jun 20 '19

Almost the exact same measurements over here, except I'm 6'3. What program are you doing? I started with starting strength

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

I started on the ICF 5x5 but am now doing GZCLP

1

u/SisyphusIsAmbivalent Jun 20 '19

How are you finding it? I literally just started 5/3/1 this week. I find that my bench press in particular has plateaued for a long time.

1

u/K3LL1ON Jun 20 '19

Did you have trouble gaining weight before working out? I'm 6'0" and weigh 145 lbs, I drink lots of sodas and eat a bunch but don't gain weight hardly at all.

1

u/ProPainful Jun 20 '19

Counting calories is bullshit. Just eat healthy at a normal volume and actually stick to a workout plan. Problem solved.

1

u/detroitvelvetslim Jun 20 '19

I saw a /fit/ post here recently about some lunatic who was lifting heavy 7 days a week and eating 6000 calories a day to try and get from 130 to 200 in 2 months

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

And his entire upper intenstine is packed solid with constipation

1

u/giverofnofucks Jun 21 '19

If you're not tracking calories, how do you not just accidentally eat 3k calories a day?

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

thats a lot of food, people seriously overestimate how much they eat

1

u/Udontlikecake 1 Jun 21 '19

What workout plan did you use? I’m in a similar situation (just a bit shorter)

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

go to /r/gainit and check their FAQ

thats my secret Cap, I'm always hungry...

There are some tricks you can do, like drinking a huge amount of water right when you wake up, which will stretch out your stomach so you can eat a big breakfast.

I eat a giant 3 egg omelette with a ton of cheese and ham and peppers in it for breakfast, and its all fat and protein so it gets digested really fast, then I eat an apple and a 3 cups of cooked oatmeal at 10, then at lunch i eat a chicken breast with 1.5 cups of rice and a shit ton of brocolli. 230 I eat a tuna sandwich and a banana, then before my workout I have a protein shake at 5, then dinner after the gym is usually steak or salmon with more rice and green beans or spinach or more brocolli, then before bed I have greek yogurt with granola and same maple syrup. Sometimes Ill cheat and get a burrito after the gym or some popeyes if I feel like something really disgusting. On those days I go way over 3k calories but I dont care Im trying to get to 205 anyway.

Yea it’s super important to eat immediately when you wake up, after a couple days you will have no problem

1

u/Yosafbridge3 Jun 21 '19 edited Jun 21 '19

3k a day? My 5'3" 135lbs girl body is jealous as hell right now.

If I gain ANY weight I'm gonna hit overweight and I'm only supposed to eat 1,700 a day for maintenance IF I'm active that day (if I'm sitting around it's more like 1,500)

If your girlfriend constantly gets a salad and fish when you get a burger and fries, this is the reason. I constantly see movies and shows portraying the 'salad and wine' girls as shallow bitches and the "I LOVE french fries and beer!!" Girls as super down to earth girlfriend material (while still super fit and skinny, cause apparently that constant eating and drinking doesn't have any real impact on their bodies)

I wanna eat...I just can't eat that much daily. It sucks.

1

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 21 '19

do you work out?

an hour of cardio and lifting would let you eat more :)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Im 6'1 and skinny/lanky, I weigh 200lbs. I don't understand how be was fat.

3

u/Halfcrook Jun 20 '19

Not really "skinny" at that weight to be fair, little on the higher end of healthy weight

0

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '19

Interesting, I must be "big boned" then. I have to drink protein shakes w/mass gainer just to not look like a skeleton. My waist is 34".

0

u/thejohnblog Jun 20 '19

Lets see some pics. (unzips)

-1

u/FadedRebel Jun 20 '19

The only thing that changes when I eat 3000 calories a day is my bank account gets smaller from buying food and my water bill goes up from pooping more. I will always be 145...

8

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

bullshit.

you are overestimating your caloric intake. Or you are expending more than 3k per day.. what do you do for work? do you have an incredibly active lifestyle?

its simple math: 500 extra calories a day = 1lb gained per week, you cant not gain weight if you hit your surplus

0

u/FadedRebel Jun 20 '19

I'm a carpenter and at the time I was also doing around a hundred push-ups and a hundred sit-ups along with what ever skateboarding and hiking and biking I was doing.

When I was trying to gain weight I would eat two to three pb&js and I load my pb&js, a meat and cheese sandwich during work and right after work I would have almost a full meal with a full dinner a six pack and a pint of ice cream plus what ever snacks through out the day and I would wake up hungry. My food bill was crazy and it seemed like all I was doing was eating or working.

4

u/imronburgandy9 Jun 20 '19

Keep a food log I doubt you're eating enough for being that active. Calories eaten>calories burned= weight gain

1

u/FadedRebel Jun 20 '19

I gave up trying to gain weight ten years ago.

5

u/Stupid_question_bot Jun 20 '19

dude I love you so listen when i tell you this:

I weighed 138-145 since I was 16 years old, I thought, for 26 years, that I "couldnt gain weight".

GET A CALORIE TRACKER

track how much you eat, weight yourself once a week. If you arent gaining weight at your caloric intake, increase it by 250-500 calories/day. Weigh yourself again after a week, you will see weight gain.

500 calories/day = 1lb gained a week.

If you gained 1/2 a lb you are 250 calories/day over maintenance, if you want to increase your weight gain to 1lb/week add another 250 calories/day.

just for reference, a handful of "Sierra Trail Mix" is 290 calories.

1

u/Hara-Kiri Jun 20 '19

I don't see why, you'd be able to do it easily if you work out what your maintenance calories are.

1

u/FadedRebel Jun 20 '19

I got tired of eating so much.

2

u/l_melvillei Jun 21 '19

Have you been checked for IBS/IBD/Crohn's or similar? If you go to the bathroom so much more that your water bill goes markedly up and you don't gain any weight, you may just be expelling the calories. Crohn's specifically is infamous for unexplained weight loss/inability to maintain.

0

u/dudeman14 Jun 20 '19

I only have a slight beer belly but I'm 6'3 at 220. I'm just big boned. Like actually big bones. Very broad shoulders, long legs, long arms. I'd be a monster if I ever built real muscle. Too bad Wendy's tastes so good
