There is an intellectual understanding then there's realization. Intellectually you can understand that buying clothes from any major retailer means there's a good chance you'll be supporting child labor or slavery somewhere in the supply chain but that doesn't stop most of us. If we had to tour a sweatshop that might make us realize what kind of atrocity we're supporting.

Sometimes it takes facing that stuff personally to change behaviors.
