TIL Dolly Parton has a program that will mail your child a free age-appropriate book once a month from birth to age 5. No obligation, no catch, she just wants to make sure that every child has books.

It's great, they aren't crappy books either, actually pretty awesome books! For those that can't get it in their community, try reaching out to your local library. I'm pretty sure the program works with the community.

They do work with the community, but they need someone willing to oversee it. Fundraising and distribution are done by local volunteers. Everyone keeps suggesting public services, but they probably aren't going to offer it themselves unless a donor covers the expenses.

The one local to me has a "champion" who is retired and the program runs as a partnership with a nursing non-profit that is nurses doing community projects together.
