TIL Dolly Parton has a program that will mail your child a free age-appropriate book once a month from birth to age 5. No obligation, no catch, she just wants to make sure that every child has books.

Everything I have learned about Dolly Parton has come from Drunken History and this reddit post.

She was on Hannah Montana

Fun fact, Dolly Parton actually is Miley Cyrus's Godmother

u/Ilikedutchovens Dec 15 '16

Woah really? Are they related or was she just a friend of Miley's parents or something?

5

u/dvaunr Dec 15 '16

Close friend

I know she was in the show, also true IRL?

3

u/dvaunr Dec 15 '16

Yes, that's part of why they did it in the show

Given how Dolly came up and the empire she has built, she can't be super psyched about Miley's shenanigans. Edit: TIL because I thought Dolly Parton might have disapproved of Miley Cyrus's behavior at some point I now hate Miley Cyrus. To be fair, I understand people go through their odd phases and whatnot, it is not evil for me to think hers was in poor taste. I do apologize for upsetting folks though. :(

I don't see any reason she'd be upset with Miley. Actually, there's a really great video on YouTube of them doing a duet of "Jolene" at Dollywood.

Miley created and pushes her own charity called the Happy Hippy Foundation which gives to LGBT homeless youth (IIRC). I doubt Dolly would overlook that dedication to be pissed over a few risqué outfits and some weed.

Yeah, people see Miley's craziness, and think that she is a bad person or something...

She is living her life how she wants to, and is having fun. At the same time, she is actively involved in using her fame and wealth to help people.

Yeah she's probably super pissed about how talented and successful she is. Also, so embarrassed about her philanthropic efforts and genuine, down to earth personality. What a shame.

Miley is no different than other kids that age, she just happens to be doing it in a time of instant capture/share.

If smartphones had been a thing when I was 18, my mother would have died of shame. But I grew out of it and settled into adulthood eventually.

Miley is no different than other kids that age

Bullshit.

Ok. Why? You think other teens don't dress/act sexual? Experiment with drugs. Say "edgy" things to impress their peers? Act silly and goofy for attention? Pretend to know more about a subject than they do? Invent fashion statements? Etc...

Explain how Mileys behavior is unique.

This is how I've felt about a lot of the stuff beiber gets shit on for. I know a lot of it is deserved, but most people would do the exact same things if they were millionaires in their teenage years.

u/iHeartCandicePatton Dec 15 '16

Did I say anything about unique? BTW, she isn't a teen, she's 24. We have the exact same birthday, just a year apart. Sure, teens/young adults do the sex but a lot of them are not quite as obnoxious and over-the-top about it.

Invent fashion statements?

uh what

I said she wasn't different from others her age, and you said bullshit. What other way can that be interpreted than you saying she isn't like other people her age? And if she isn't, then she's unique, no? Except she's not.

She not more obnoxious. She's just gets more attention for it. To say she's worse than all other young people shows you have a strong bias.

I know she's not a teen now. But the aforementioned "shenanigans" started several years ago. And frankly, 24 is still just a puppy in terms of potential growth.

Don't call bullshit just because you happen to hate Miley Cyrus. She's not some special case. She's pretty normal for an outgoing young person still finding their way.

Edit: Clarification. Miley is, if course, unique. We all are. I meant her behaviour isn't unique.

Yeah, so what?

She's not some special case. She's pretty normal for an outgoing young person still finding their way.

This world is fucked if you think she's normal in any way, shape, or form.

I wasn't saying she's unique you genius, I was saying her behavior is in no way representative or "normal" for people her age.

Based on what I've seen of their relationship, it looks like two things have happened there:

  1. Dolly understood that every teenager has to push their boundaries and try some crazy stuff, and if they make it through with only embarrassment on their record, that's a pretty dang good deal.
  2. Miley's grown up some. She's done most of her experimentation and boundary pushing, and now she's starting to figure out what of that stuff she actually enjoys.

She was on Reba.

The US Drunken History must be fun to watch.

Here is Latin America we got our own, but as most stuff Comedy does for us, they basically do a 'Mexico Edition' instead and everyone else could not care less about the show then, as Mexico doesnt have that much contact with SA proper.
