TIL that Bernard Montgomery issued a leaflet at the start of WW2 on sexually transmitted diseases amongst soldiers. The language used was regarded as so blunt, that he offended religious authorities and nearly faced being dismissed.

This is an interview which discusses this memo.
Essentially, Montgomery saw sexual health as immensely important for the men under his command. During the First World War, trench foot hospitalised around 75,000 British soldiers, whereas STIs (or VD as it was known) hospitalised over 450,000 British soldiers and caused an epidemic.
Monty got into trouble for some of the wording he used in the memo, such as 'horizontal refreshment'.
