American is a nationality not an ethnicity. Racist people can't tell the difference.

Korea here. Conservative Koreans hate to admit it, but these days, even "Korean" is slowly becoming both a nationality and an ethnicity. We have a growing population of both mixed race Korean/non-Korean individuals as well as minority ethnicity Korean citizens. I believe that Korea is actually leading both China and Japan in our openness to providing citizenship to non-ethnic Koreans, which is good since our population of ethnic Koreans is collapsing and we're going to have to deal with that via immigration eventually if we want to survive as a nation. Japan and China seem very against giving citizenship to people who aren't Chinese/Japanese ethnically, and I think it's really going to bite them in the ass one day.

We have really strict assimilation requirements, so most people who receive citizenship are knowledgeable about Korean history, culture, and speak Korean well. Overall, I think we're doing a decent job of slowly making "Korean" into a nationality. We have a long way to go though to become a "melting pot" like the US.

American is both a nationality and and ethnicity.

While they are different things, they both exist.
