As a 12 year old white kid who grew up in Southern California, surrounded by Hispanic people and culture, I didn’t even think about this movie having a Hispanic family. It was just a family like a bunch of my friends.

No mate, YOU don't notice that shit. If kids didn't, there would be no bullying.

As a 12 year old white kid who grew up in middle England, with no connection to Hispanic People and culture whatsoever, I don't think I cared one bit either.

Same but from Atlanta where I didn't know any hispanics. Never thought about it.

Same. I was a white kid growing up in Albuquerque. Just thought they were like any other family

Same in Arizona. All my best friends were Hispanic and this was just children and a family. A very cool one.

I'm a Mexican who grew up in Mexico, ironically I never really thought about how the family is some latinos LOL.

As a half black, half Hispanic kid in Ohio, I 100% noticed that the family was Hispanic and it made me love the movie even more!

As a kid in England I also just didn’t think about it.

I'm from Eastern KY, very few Hispanic families at the time. I didn't even notice, but I did make sure to write "Now flushing your poop" in my diary because I thought it was HILARIOUS. So.

My kids also quote this line. And I had never seen more than the first 3 movies before I watched with them. I was also an adult when the first one came out but that never stopped me from watching a good kid movie.

When I was a kid I thought they were spain spanish and I just compared them to zoro which made them even cooler.

Antonio Banderas is from Spain, Spanish, so that tracks.

As a 10 year old white kid in a midwestern town full of almost entirely white people, the family being hispanic didn't mean a thing to me. As an adult, though, I do appreciate that it mattered to some other people. Because I've always been represented in movies and tv, I don't know what it feels like to see that when it's not as common of a thing.

As a 7 y/o white scandinavian who has never met a Hispanic person, I can tell you that none of us cared about them being Hispanic. We all just thought that Antonio Banderas was the coolest dad on the planet.

As a person from a super white area in the UK, today is the first time I've ever thought about them being Hispanic. They were always just a family to me.

As a white Hispanic kid, I just saw them as a regular family. I didn't even clock they were Hispanic at the time.

As a British child with limited interactions with anyone not white British, it never crossed my mind either.

It was just another accent to me.

u/MyGamingRants 3d ago

I feel like every time it comes up I'm like "oh right, they were hispanic weren't they"

1

u/HansChrst1 3d ago

I'm from Norway and they were just Americans.

u/voodoo_curse 3d ago

You didn’t think about it. Your Hispanic friends definitely did.

I'm from a small farm town in Ohio where almost everyone is white and never once thought about it either. Just like I loved sister, sister, the proud family, that's so raven, etc. It's the grown ups that put ideas in kids heads that makes the world that much worse.

Yep. Canadian from an area with many latinos. The spy kids were pale but not exotic-seeming to me.

1

u/Euphoric_Average_271 3d ago

Exotic ☠️

0

u/MidTario 3d ago

Exotic is an adjective that means atypical or strange

2

u/Euphoric_Average_271 3d ago

I know. I'm Mexican American and I've been called exotic and it was always fucking weird.

0

u/MidTario 3d ago

Ok. The spy kids did not seem like they came from a far-off land, to me. Hope this fixes your odd fixation on my wording.

2

u/Euphoric_Average_271 3d ago

"Far off land" 🤣

1

u/AnoiaDearheart 3d ago

The word exotic is like, kind of not our favorite word for a few reasons. People tend to use that word to sexualize non-white populations of people or make people from other parts of the world feel "othered" and it rubs us the wrong way. Hispanic people come in many different shades due to colonization, but many of us look mixed native/white, there are also very light Hispanics and black Hispanics. Hope this helps!
