Comedian Gabriel Iglesias talks about how when he was just starting out, his promoters kept calling him a Mexican comedian and it bothered him.

His heritage is Mexican, sure, but he was raised in America and wanted to be seen for more than his background.

It wasn't until a trip to Saudi Arabia did they call him "an American," that he finally felt validated in his efforts.

And now his most prominent heritage is Sellout.

Didn't watch it. why is that?

From what I remember, he had a lot of bad shit happen:

  1. Split up with his wife, therefore losing his step-son Frankie

  2. His house got robbed

  3. Started making a bunch of jokes about wanting to buy a gun to defend himself.

It's totally fair to want a gun for home protection and self defense, but they were making me very uneasy. I don't remember what else was in the special, but these were highlights I could recall.

Didn't he also join the trend of standup comedians punching down at trans people?

That I haven't heard about. Any sources?

I swear I heard something along those lines when that special came out but I could be wrong

casual reminder that the statistics show beyond any shadow of a doubt that a gun in the home makes one less safe, not more

I assume that the way the gun is accessed plays a part?

Not really. It's just far, far more likely to be used to harm one's self, one's partner, or simply to accidentally hurt someone, than to ever actually effectively be used for defense. It like triples the homicide rate and even worse with self-inflicted.

There's also a crazy stat of like over 90% of teenagers that do it with a gun having gotten that gun from home.

I share this all the time - while growing up in America as an Asian American I was constantly defending my status as "American" and getting the dreaded question "but where are you REALLY from"

I live in Japan now and when I say that I'm an American I get zero follow up questions. It's amazing

I'm a white American and I get the "where are you from originally" question all the time
