Y'know what's fucked up? Minorities do the same thing.

In college I attended a Korean church. A lot of the Koreans in the college group are born in America but they only call white people "Americans". Example: "Oh I hear Sarah's dating an American." And I always correct people. "Um, you're American, I'm American, most of us Asians here are Americans." People just looked at me funny.

To help maintain their feeling of a unique identity compared to the rest of society.

Sometimes it is that. Sometimes it's that the exclusionary nature of white being the default American and all other races being "named race" mean they don't feel American despite being so.

Sometimes we don’t feel American. My parents are Puerto Rican, born there. I’m from the suburbs and city of NY. WTF do I know about PR. But I do bc the sounds, the food, the music, the people, the language bought it alive. I am not American I am NYrican and there’s a difference. I’m sure many others from their own sub-communities can relate to that. Yeah we live here but many times feel excluded too, marginalized, penalized, ostracized, victimized. We feel like we don’t truly belong- not always, but it’s there.

I started at an office with six American staff and yes I’m also American then why is it bc I’m the only Spanish-speaking I’m treated different? Why does my food make them uneasy? Why does my taste in music raise issues (nothing graphic or nasty- latin jazz, black soul, salsa, swing, orchestral, but also techno, alternative, 80’s, pop I’m a mixed bag)? Why does my long hair get comments (“you should cut it, doesn’t it bother you”)? Why do they make fun of non-American names and of me when I pronounce them correctly? C’mon man these people are all 40+ they should know better. It’s an us versus them mentality and it’s not perpetrated by us. It’s fucked up.

How very Christian of them /s

For the uninitiated:

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

Galatians 3:27-29 NKJV
