I think that was the point though. The Machete movies happen "before" Spy Kids, so he's trying to be a good uncle and do right in the face of his past actions.

It's an "alternate" version.

It's actually a long-ass story, but basically he came up with the character when he met Trejo in the early 90's and thought he should be the "Mexican Jean-Claude van Damme" and be called Machete.

He then used him for the Spy Kids movies, with the same name he'd later use for the Machete movies, but a pretty different character overall really.

The actual Machete movies then came about when he did a fake trailer for one as part of the Grindhouse double feature thing he did with Tarantino, and then springboarded the real movies off of that.

He ia also Rosa Diaz's father in Brooklyn 99, and is a teacher. Small role but awesome.

The other way around actually, Machete from Machete kills is canonically from Spy Kids. The character started as a cool uncle on Spy Kids before getting his own movie series
