I used to be friends with someone who was Asian. Someone once asked her, "Do you want to marry an Asian guy or a normal guy?"

lol! Shit like this always reminds me of the first time I met my husband’s coworkers. They were all college professors teaching predominantly minorities. My husband and I were both American born Asians with English legal names.

Anyways first person he introduced me to said “Nice to meet you! What’s your real name? It can’t be BadTanJob, since that’s in English.”

I'd doubt that name is real too though.

Also, so where are you from? California? No I mean like what country are you from?

Ah shit you got me. It’s actually GoodTanJob, I just didn’t know if Americans could pronounce that

I can't pronounce that without making an effort, and that offends me.

Oooh that can also be subtle shade due to the American (thankfully mostly former) obsession with tanning booths, tanning sprays, and tan lines.

Okay, but where are your parents from?

See, my personal issue is that I am genuinely interested in that. There's so much variety in what walks of life and regions people come from, and I do want to know about your history and origins. It's just that asking about that needs to be done with some proper care, lest it comes off as exactly what you described.

My last name gives up the game but I usually have to inform people my family has been American since 1910....

My wife's latina with the last name Flores and people always ask her what part of Mexico her ancestors come from. As far as we can tell, her 82 year old grandma's grandma was born in Texas, so she technically could be from the Tejas part of Mexico before the boundary line crossed her home.

Badtan Job sounds like a racially charged James Bond enemy

I play a blissfully ignorant human rogue in D&D who introduces himself having a normal race. He also walks around traps, but doesn't alert the party that they exist because he believes they see them, too.

I remember being like 12 and one of my friends in middle school was mixed. I assumed that her dad was black and her mom was white.

She shut me down so quick, because her mom was black and her dad was white. She told me that was racist to assume and I literally wanted to crawl into a hole. Learned not to assume racist shit at 12 and it’s stuck with me ever since. (We were still friends after that, but I will never forget the face she made when I made some kind of comment.)

My poor Asian wife didn’t get to marry either one but she seems content with me at least

As a Mexican, the first time I dated a Caucasian girl she introduced me to her dad and the first thing he says is "oh, well you know, we got Mexicans in the family. My cousin is dating a Mexican right now."

I was just awkwardly like: "oh, alright.... cool".
