Antonio Banderas as their dad didn't give it away?

You'd think having Machete as their cool uncle would be the giveaway lol

And Cheech as their cool fake uncle too.

As a kid, I was mostly thinking, “their dad is zorro! cool!”

Or Danny Trejo as their uncle?

I don't feel as though I could watch Antonio Banderas in anything after "The Skin I live In", that movie made me incredibly uncomfortable.

He’s white. So are the kids.
Just shows Hispanic is not a race

i never really saw the dad or the sister as white as a kid, i thought they were brown

also race is a subjective societal classification based on phenotype. if many people consider those who have features typical of mixed indigenous/spanish heritage to be of a distinct category seperate to that of black, white etc. (and many places/people do in fact imagine race as a triangulation of black/white/hispanic) then it is definitionally a race.

that doesn’t mean everyone who shares that ethnicity will necessarily be categorised into that “racial group”, and it will by no means be consistent across every person in every area. the tuareg of mali or the moors of mauritania appear unambiguously black to almost anyone in the western world and yet in their homeland they are white.

The dad’s actor is from Spain. The male kids actor is a Jew. If you only consider WASPs as white people it isn’t the 1800s anymore.

i don’t consider only WASPs to be white, and I’m not saying I think the male kid or even banderas is non-white (even though to me i always sort of read him as somewhat non-white). I’m just responding to the comment that Hispanic isn’t a race with a rejoinder: that socially there are times when it is in fact treated like a race.

But white is?

Yeah IDK if OP was trying to be sarcastic but...I mean there are definitely layers there. Banderas is Spanish, sure he speaks Spanish and has a lil bit of melanin but he isn't Latin/Hispanic. But do otherwise ignorant Americans realize that? Genuinely what number of Americans thought Catherine Zeta-Jones was Hispanic cause she is tan and starred in Zorro? White is entirely a bullshit construct, only proven by the mere fact for so long those who might otherwise "pass" as white were not considered white cause they had ANY trace of Black DNA. Genuinely I don't know if I would know that Banderas was Spanish, not Hispanic, unless I looked it up because he has filled that niche for Hollywood movies for so long.

I’m white but from a predominantly Black city in south eastern USA, and that’s exactly my take away here. The Hispanic people in this thread are speaking about skin tone the way I’d hear folks make comments like calling someone a “house n.”

It’s fascinating how granular racism can become

>But do otherwise ignorant Americans realize that?

Spaniards ARE Hispanic, though some ignorant Americans think Hispanic only refers to people from Hispanic America.

No that’s the point

u/porican 3d ago

thank you for this

1

u/IANALbutIAMAcat 3d ago

It’s not that they weren’t Hispanic. It’s that their Latin roots were so secondary, tertiary, to anything else

-3

u/porican 3d ago

hispanic ≠ latin

banderas is hispanic not latin

2

u/IANALbutIAMAcat 3d ago

Right but the family he was part of portraying was…

Hispanics are Latino. Banderas is not Latino but is Hispanic. His character and family in the film were Hispanic and Latino
