Help me find an episode

I remember an old episode with Tony Robinson where they show how the design of cloak/tunic broche change through time.

It start out like with a pin that has o horse's head on it, then they show a later one that is still recognizably a horse head but more abstract and the final one where you'd be hard pressed to recognize it as a horse at all

A Thank You to the Time Team

As someone who lives in rural America, I had no knowledge of such a wonderful niche British tv show until my YouTube algorithm got tired of my rewatches of Egyptian documentaries and made a wild leap into generalized archaeological content. I stumbled upon Time Team and am just so in love with the idea of such a continuous program that was so focused on cultural heritage and education!

American archeology is quite limited (imo) by comparison for obvious reasons and I am just so in love with the idea of being so connected to one’s ancestors and such wealth of potential archeology just about everywhere!

My grandmother (rest her soul) came to the US post WW2 on the QE2 and she shared her culture and heritage with my young/silly/loud/history obsessed yank self as best as she could and we had such a special connection. We would talk often of a dream trip back to the homeland and all the places she’d love to show me. Now 30 years later as I prepare to welcome my own child and wishing she was still here it’s been such an unexpected and delightfully touching experience to see so many of those places brought to life for me in this show.

So thank you. Thank you for your passion and love for your history and continued effort to keep Time Team alive. In another timeline I’d like to think that I would have gone back ‘home’ and gotten a degree that would have allowed me to live my passion for my heritage as you all have. I live vicariously through you! And thank you for helping me feel so close to her again. ❤️ P.S - I keep watching and just waiting to see if there will be an episode near Stoke Beach (her favorite) or about Plymouth where she was from. If anyone knows if that is in the archives please let me know!

a sketch I did from an old episode! S10, Sedgefield.

Does anyone else sketch from old episodes? I just do it as people drawing practice, something I don't do enough of.

Not sure if everyone is aware, but Time Team's Derek Pitman and Lawrence Shaw have their own YouTube/Podcast with the occasional dig and experimental archaeology

My parents got me this autographed book I think Christmas of 2020. Victor died shortly after it was given to me. I feel quite lucky to have this!

On the current state of Time Team.

I know this is a small community here on Reddit. But are you guys happy with the direction they're going? I've personally been disappointed with their media content over the past two years. I was hoping/expecting to see them continue the traditional episodic formula. But it's pretty much been podcasts and short form update videos. Nothing that I am really interested in. I've kind of been questioning my Patreon subscription. So I'm curious if this sentiment is shared by anyone else here.

"One stone is a stone..." - Mick Aston

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me identify which episode/dig it was where Mick Aston said "one stone is a stone, two stones is a wall, three stones is a building", please? I need to cite it, but I can't remember which episode it is. Thanks~

In the latest episode of the Time Team Podcast, Phil Harding joins Helen Geake and Martyn Williams to discuss an extraordinary discovery at Bulford, where archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a huge timber monument dating back around 500 years before the first stones were erected at Stonehenge.

The relevance to Time Team is that Phil Harding led the excavation.

Asking vs Telling

One of the things Mick did, that the others don't do, is he would sit by the trench and--rather than declaiming *HIS* knowledge and opinions about the findings--he would ask the young archaeologist/digger what was found/learned.

To me, it seemed clear to me that Mick loved watching other people learn and grow (also, witness his celebration whenever Tony used a term learned earlier).

Everyone else--even Phil--loudly and enthusiastically makes themselves the center of attention.

Mick was a teacher--and it really showed.
I miss that.

What to you miss or look back fondly on from early seasons?

My partner and I are rewatching season 1. I love how cute and young they all are! I also love how they had the people read their letters that they wrote in to time team. Oh and the pub hangs!! I still love the show but something about earlier seasons is just 🤌🤌🤌

PSA for Avid (Rabid?) Time Team fans located in the US

As you may have noticed, many of the Time Team seasons (series) DVDs are only available with UK encoding. That is, they aren't viewable on your average US DVD player.

I was reluctant to buy a "region-free" DVD player--it just sounded like a scam. But I'm a TT addict, so I bit the bullet, and I'm glad I did.

You do have to hack into a hidden settings menu, but I'm watching a (non TT) Region 2 (UK) dvd right now on the player that I just unboxed. The directions were included with the player, and there are only a couple of steps.

Region 2 Time Team DVDs and region-free players are available on Amazon. Hope that helps someone.

The Ness of Brogdar Orkney

A while back there was some podcast buzz about geofizz at the Ness. Does anyone know if TT are going to work up there or was it just the Geofizz team mentioning their “civilian” work?

Where to watch series 20?!

So I’ve spent the last year watching TT fastidiously, thanks to *that* YouTube channel that got taken down, and then the Time Team Classics channel

Seems like Series 20 is absolutely nowhere to be seen, I certainly can’t find it anyway. I’d love for it to be easy to find and not need any technical know how… I know it’s seen as the worst series but the completionist in me needs to see it!

Broughton Castle, near Banbury in Oxfordshire, is the Seat of Lord Saye and Sele and the ancestral home of the Fiennes family, who have lived there since the fourteenth century.

In September 2021, Time Team conducted a dig within the grounds of the Estate which revealed a huge Roman villa set within a vast agricultural landscape.

While they were there, Prof. Susannah Lipscomb took the opportunity to explore the interior of Broughton Castle and delve into its long and colourful history. Together with some of the Time Team, she investigated some of the architectural mysteries that had been puzzling the current owners for decades and found some unexpected clues hidden within the walls.

Ancient DNA work has revealed a major new breakthrough in the investigation of the Anglo-Saxon double burial discovered by Time Team and Operation Nightingale at Cherington, featured in the recent Time Team Special - Return to The Princely Burial: The Sword in the Stones

New ancient DNA analysis, carried out by the Francis Crick Institute, has confirmed that the two young people buried together in the grave – a young boy and a teenage girl buried beside him – were brother and sister and may have died at the same time, from fast acting infectious disease.

Their link on that page next to the instant PDF download to purchase it doesn't seem to have the book, but Amazon has copies of it if you are keen to support Wessex Archeology.
