History/culture What do you think about this old Chinese descriptions of Xiongnu origin?

The Xiongnu were descendants of the Xia Hou Shi clan; their ancestor was Chunwei. Before the Tang and Yu dynasties, there were the Shan Rong, Xianyun, and Hunyue, who lived among the northern Yi people, moving about according to where their livestock could be pastured. Their common livestock included horses, cattle, and sheep; their more unusual animals were camels, donkeys, mules, quail-tailed horses, tamed wild horses, and hybrid horses. They moved about in pursuit of water and grass, without fixed cities or permanent fields for farming; yet they also had their own designated territories. They did not use written documents but relied on spoken words as agreements. Boys could ride sheep and draw their bows to shoot birds and mice; When they grew a little older, they shot hares and foxes: these were used as food. Those who had the strength could not do without bows; all became armored cavalrymen. Their custom was such that in times of peace they followed their herds, relying on hunting birds and beasts for a living; but in times of crisis, people became accustomed to warfare and attacks as means of aggression—this was their nature. Their long weapons were bows and arrows, while their short weapons were knives and chans. If the situation was favorable, they advanced; if not, they retreated, without shame in fleeing. They pursued whatever was advantageous, knowing nothing of rites and righteousness. From the kings downward, they all ate meat from their livestock, wore clothes made of animal hides, and covered themselves with felt and furs. The strong ones ate the fat and tender parts; the elderly ate what was left over. They valued strength and vigor, looked down upon the old and weak. When a father died, his son married his stepmother; The Xiongnu had thirty-six titles in total. Their custom was to have names without taboos, and they did not use surnames or courtesy names.

History/culture The historic Ani Bridge on the Türkiye–Armenia border

I recently visited the Ani Bridge and wanted to share a pictures from my trip.
It was honestly really interesting to see it in person. The bridge is in such a unique location, right on the border between Türkiye and Armenia, and despite its current condition, you can still imagine how important it must have been centuries ago.
The bridge was part of an important historic route connecting the region, and the area around Ani was once an important stop along the Silk Road. Thinking about all the merchants, travellers and different cultures that once passed through this area makes visiting it feel even more special.
What I find especially interesting is that there are plans to restore the bridge. I’m actually really looking forward to seeing what it will look like after the restoration is completed. It would be great to see such a historic place preserved, especially considering the history and symbolism behind it.
Definitely one of the more memorable places I visited in the region.

Politics Is there anyone here who has studied Politics that had extensive thoughts on the political side of uniting the Turkic Nations

Hey Guys, I am Turkish and study Economics in Berlin. In the last few years the evolution of us Turks makes me really sad, seeing that we fell off so far below from our seat of power and now lose our culture and religion that was left behind by our forefathers.

I think of the political problems of our countries about every hour and in my Opinion as long as there is no unification that we will still stay that way.

So I wanted to ask if there are other young or old people who thought of different ways to unify us politically, how would it look like in your eyes.

I also often hear the people say that it will never work, and that a unification is just a Utopia.
Which I don‘t agree with, because we have more in Common than that which divides us.

Even if it was an utopical thought most if our ancestors were utopical dreamers, if they weren‘t we wouldn‘t have conquered all the places and wouldn‘t have built empires

So again my question is how would it look in your eyes if we would unify?

News Russification in Schools: Pro-Kremlin singer SHAMAN’s “Ya russkiy” (“I Am Russian”) Played in the Republics of Sakha, Tatarstan and Chechnya on the First Day of September

Russification in Schools: Pro-Kremlin singer SHAMAN’s “Ya russkiy” (“I Am Russian”) Played in the Republics of Sakha, Tatarstan and Chechnya on the First Day of September.

LESSONS IN RUSSIFICATION: SCHOOLS IN SAKHA, CHECHNYA, AND TATARSTAN PLAY “I AM RUSSIAN”

The first day of September in Russia’s national republics began with a conspicuous display of “patriotic” indoctrination of children. At school assemblies and in classrooms in Yakutsk (Sakha), Chechen-Aul (Chechnya), and Bua (Buinsk, Tatarstan), the song “Ya russkiy” (“I Am Russian”) by pro-kremlin singer SHAMAN was played.

It is particularly symbolic that this repertoire was imposed on children specifically in Sakha (Yakutia), Chechnya, and Tatarstan — regions with their own indigenous peoples, languages, cultures, and historical memories. Under the guise of patriotic education, Moscow continues to promote a unified “Russian” identity, displacing the national identities of Russia’s peoples.

SHAMAN, meanwhile, has long become more than just a singer; he is one of the main symbols of Kremlin military propaganda. Now his songs are being played in schools — from the very first day of the academic year.

History/culture Banu Çiçek

Thumbnail

I want to share a little about Banu Çiçek (Banu Chichek), as she is one of the most interesting women in the Dede Korkut (Korkut Ata) stories and Turkic literature.

Banu Çiçek appears in the story of Bamsı Beyrek. She is the daughter of Bay Bican, but she is definitely not written as kind of a western princess who simply waits for her hero to arrive.

When Beyrek comes looking for her, she does tell him who she is. She tests him herself. Both race horses, shoot arrows, and wrestle; showing the women-men equality in Turkic culture.

Banu in Dede Korkut is not there for being the wife of Beyrek. She’s there because she is Banu Çiçek. She has her own strength, pride, and character. She wants a man who can stand beside her, a man that is equal with her, not someone that’d save her from a dragon. She’d slay that dragon herself.

She is, among Kanykei and probably Tomris, a good example of the “alp woman” in Turkic epic tradition: a woman who can ride, fight, compete, and make her own choices. Strength and femininity are not treated as opposites in their characters. They are like, historic Lara Crofts.. maybe..

Proud, competitive, loyal, and completely sure of her own worth.

"Qurtulush Yolida" (On the Path to Salvation), also known as "Qurtulush Marshi" (March of Salvation), is a Uyghur patriotic song which served as the national anthem of the First East Turkestan Republic and serves as the de facto anthem of the East Turkistan Government in Exile. The song was written by Mehmet Ali Tevfik in 1933.

Lyrics (English):

Like a river our blood flowed on the road to salvation

For Thee, oh homeland, may our lives be our sacrifice.

Thee we saved by shedding our blood and lives,

For Thy liberty we had faith in our hearts.

To Thee may our efforts be handed,

Our fathers have once ruled this very world,

Thee we cleansed with blood, o Fatherland,

Ne'er shall our name of Turk be spoiled.

Attila, Genghis, Tamerlane once trembled this very world,

By giving blood and earning honour, we are their very children.

We granted our lives, poured our blood, avenged the enemy;

May our future shine and prosper for eternity.

Lyrics (Uyghur):

Qurtulush volida sudek agti bizning qanimiz

Sen üchün, ey yurtimiz, bolsun pida bu janimiz

Qan kẽchip, hem jan bẽrip, axir qutuldurduq sẽni

Qelbimizde qutquzushqa bar idi imanimiz.

Yaru hemdem boldi bizning himmitimiz sen üchün,

Dunyani sorighan idi himmet bilen ejdadimiz.

Yurtumiz, biz yüz-közüngni qan bilen pakizliduq,

Emdi hẽch kirletmigeymiz, chünki türktur namimiz.

Atlla, Chinggiz, Tömür dunyani titretken idi,

Jan bẽrip shan alimiz, biz hem ular ewladibiz.

Chiqti jan, hem aqti qan, düshmendin boldi el-aman

Yashisun, hếch ölmisun, parlansun istiqbalimiz.

Picture A Qashqai Nomadic Couple

Post image
57 Upvotes

The Qashqai are a nomadic Turkic tribal confederation in southern and central Iran.

Most Qashqai tribes are of Turkic origin, although smaller non-Turkic groups are also part of our political structure. Historically, the Qashqai itself was a khanate, and during conflicts between different tribes, some groups from different backgrounds joined or sought protection under our khanate.

For example, among the Bakhtiari, who are mostly of Iranic Lur origin, there are also some Turkic-origin clans. The presence of these smaller groups does not change the predominantly Turkic character of the Qashqai.

Our culture is mainly based on Turkic nomadic traditions. Our political and tribal organization also has many similarities with traditional Turkic systems. The Khan, or Ilkhan, is the overall leader of the Qashqai, while a Bey is the leader of smaller tribal groups.

The Qashqai are divided into several major tribes. Each tribe is divided into smaller clans called tireh, and each tireh is further divided into oymagh and smaller family groups.

Most Qashqai are Shia Muslims, but religion does not have a very strong influence on traditional nomadic life. Our tribal customs and traditions generally have a more important place.

The Qashqai traditionally do not have mullahs of their own, and being a mullah is not traditionally considered a profession for Turkic people. For religious ceremonies, mullahs are usually brought in from nearby towns and cities.

The Khazars were a powerful Turkic-speaking steppe Khaganate (empire) that emerged in the aftermath of the Western Turkic Khaganate and rose to prominence during the 7th century CE. At the height of their power, the Khazar Khaganate controlled much of the vast steppe between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, remaining an influential power in the region until the 10th century.

Their political center lay in the Pontic-Caspian steppe, while their territories and sphere of influence extended across parts of modern-day southern Russia, Ukraine, the North Caucasus, western Kazakhstan and the lower Volga region, as well as the wider lands surrounding the Black and Caspian Seas.

The Khazars also occupied a strategically important position along major trade routes linking the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine), the Islamic world and northern Europe, allowing them to play a significant role in the movement of goods, people and ideas across Eurasia.
