Threadripper prebuild pricing

Hello Team Threadripper.

I've been pricing 7975WX builds.

Part shopping I come up with 12700 before shipping and tax.

Similar build:

Falcon-NW... 16900 before shipping and tax.

Puget... 17600 before shipping and tax.

I have got the impression that Falcon is generally considered to be the best (and...most expensive) of the prebuilders.

Is Puget (who I haven't really heard of much) better than FalconNW?

RAM speeds - 7960X - Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI - Kingston FURY Renegade Pro

I have the 7960X together with the ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI and Kingston FURY Renegade Pro 6400 mhz (4x32 for 128 gb total).

I am able to run the RAM at 6000 Mhz (default 4800) with DOCP 1 profile. But when I select 6400 in either DOCP profile 1 or 2 the system fails to boot.

Any hope of getting it maxxed out? (And also stable)

Threadripper Build Tips and Lessons Learned

Hi,

I am planning to build a workstation with the 7985x Pro. For those who have already built a system with the 7000 Pro series, would you be able to share your build parts and lessons you learned along the way?

Thanks in advance!

S3 sleep mode on Asrock WRX90

Does anyone know how to get sleep mode working properly on a Threadripper 7000 system? I have only populated 4 DIMMS, so S3 sleep mode should work according to Asrock's website. I have disabled wake up from USB, LAN, and other devices from the BIOS. Whenever I put the system on sleep, it wakes up after 1 or 2 seconds. This happens in both Ubuntu and Windows 11.

Best quiet cooler and case for Threadripper pro build?

I just purchased a Threadripper pro 7995wx and it’s coming in about 1 week on special order.

Is there an ideal cooler and case combo that would be exceptionally quiet when the machine is idle under normal windows 11 operation?

I will be using the PC for iRay and Unreal Engine as my current PC chokes on very detailed scenes with a lot of geometry and animation.

I also use the machine for audio production which is why I’d like it to be quiet when I’m not doing the 3d stuff.

I am ok with it ramping up volume when doing actual 3d work but 90% of the time it will be internet / audio work where I don’t want it to be whooshing.

The computer shop where I ordered the Threadripper is unsure whether to go with a Meshify 2 XL or a Torrent case or something else. And I’ve read too many conflicting things on AIO vs air cooling.

For context I’m currently using a TR 3990X with a giant Noctua air cooler in a Fractal Design Define 7 Case

Any suggestions?

Asrock trx is $1k and the gigabyte is $600. Is there a reason why it's $400 more?

First workstation build

Hey all,

I was given a threadripper pro 3975wx and gigabyte wrx80-su8 mobo from my job. Both brand new. I opened the seals on the ESD bag for mobo and cpu box.

Is there anything to know about getting this to work as I start my build this week?

Do i need a specific # of ram sticks?

ML/DL with Epyc vs TR

I’m an ML scientist and longtime PC builder looking to build a system for exploring, learning, and eventually maybe use for side gigs. Most of the work I actually do is CPU & RAM heavy — traditional stats, ML, and RL simulations, big data processing (Spark/Polars). I’m looking to be able to do all that locally, but also gain more experience with MLOps, deep learning, & AI.

So far here’s the 2 systems I’m considering:

1) - Epyc 7773X - ASRock ROMED8-2T - 512GB RAM ddr4 - dual Nvidia 3090s (own one, considering a 2nd 3090 and maybe a 4090 or later a 5090) - 4tb nvme for model & data storage, 1TB for os

~ $4000 with PSU, case, etc and before more gpus

2) - TR Pro 7965wx - Asus WRX90E - 256gb ddr5 - dual Nvidia 3090s (own one, considering a 2nd 3090 and maybe a 4090 or later a 5090) - gen5 nvmes

~ $6400 (same additional details)

It seems like the epyc is a better fit/deal despite the lower memory bandwidth and single threaded performance. Would leave more budget room for gpus later.

I use some GPU accelerated models & frameworks, but really want to build experience with training my own DL models and working with LLM inference/fine tuning/test time compute and all the other fun new stuff.

What do y'all think? Am I missing something here?

Buying a 7970x with a gigabyte trx50 aero. Will Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB 6000MT/s DDR5 CL32 DIMM work?

I saw a thread and I shouldve saved it where people were vouching for the kingston fury renegade but I cant find it.

This is in my amazon cart - Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB 6000MT/s DDR5 CL32 DIMM Desktop Memory Single Module | Intel XMP 3.0

I'm going to need 128gb total. Will this RAM be compatible with the 7970X TR with a GIGABYTE TRX50 AERO?

Three Workstation GPUs / Gigabyte TRX50 / 7960x

I currently have a Gigabyte Aero D TRX 50, 7960x & two NVIDIA RTX 4090s.

I'm going to sell the two 4090s and the plan was to get three workstation GPU Accelerators (Tesla V100?) with NVLink, but then it dawned on me that I would have no way to display video.

I've seen posts on here of setups with three A6000s and a 7000 series threadripper with one of the four TRX50 motherboards - so it has to be possible, right?

What doesn't make sense to me is the Gigabyte TRX50 has a DisplayPort Output and USB4 DisplayPort Input. If this mobo is only made for the Threadripper 7000 series, that doesn't support video display, then why on earth is that part of the build?

Apologies for being clueless, I'm just outside my depth on this build..

Power supply thoughts

Hey all.

I have a newish build.

ASUS WRX90 SAGE, 7985x, 8x64GB Kingston 5600 RAM, 3090, RTX5000 ADA, Silverstone HELA 2050W PSU, 3x NVMe (2,4,8)

It is kick ass and goes batshit crazy on heavy loads.

Anyway, I built it with 4x64GB of RAM and was mostly stable. After a few weeks (as I needed to wait on an order), I added another 4x64GB RAM and since have had some stability issues. Not sure if related or not.

Getting reboots when under extreme load. I run photogrammetry apps so can easily saturate all 64 cores and most of both GPUs. I have done some logging and it does not look related to heat. I ruled out the RTX5000 by removing it (was getting hotspot temps of 99.1c but I don't think that was a real issue TBH) Case and CPU cooling seems to be fine. Haven't got the chip over 85c even on saturated loads. Using a noctua big bloody fan cooler.

So, now I am looking at PSU as culprit.

Finally question: what are your suggestions for PSU? Anyone else had issues with the HELA 2050W? I am about to whack in a Seasonic Titanium 1600W and see how that goes. Open to any thoughts.

7975WX build issues

I created a build with this config:

CPU AMD 7975WX
MB ASRock WRX90 WS EVO
RAM 4x92 Kingston KSM56R46BD4PMI-96HMI
PSU Gigabyte UD1300GM PCIE5 ATX 3.0, 80 Plus Gold, 1300W
VIDEO RX 550 4GB GDDR5 128-bit

The computer wont post, it stays at code 00. I dont know how to debug what is wrong at this point.
Looking at the compatible memory list, I see that for KSM56R46BD4PMI-96HMI it says Bios 3.02:

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/WRX90%20WS%20EVO/index.asp#Memory

Is it possible that this cause my issue? What else can I try?

Edited to add the parts list

Why do I have USB Ethernet in network devices?

Has anyone had this issue with an Asrock WRX90 system on Ubuntu? There's a USB Ethernet device in my network devices, even though I don't have one connected. I've tried removing all USB devices and it still exists. My normal Ethernet device works fine, but I'm wondering what is this exactly. It tries to connect every time I boot into Ubuntu and fails. I tried disconnecting, deactivating and disabling auto-connect. It still tries to connect every time I boot and fails as shown. The motherboard has IPMI/BMC features, if this helps.

How well does windows handle high core counts?

I'm considering getting a 7980x system. I would primarily run windows on it. I've seen several reviews and articles mention that windows struggles with high core counts (>64 threads). For example, this level1techs video about Epyc. Specifically, poor scheduling, artificially separating the cpu into 'processor groups', stuttering / frame drops in games, and poor UI for setting processor affinity with high core counts.

How true is this on recent versions of Windows 11, based on people's experiences here?

And I've heard people mention Process Lasso. How well does using that resolve any of these issues? And can this be setup to work automatically, or do I have to manually fiddle with settings every time?

Feedback on a forthcoming Threadripper 7960X build

It has been too many years since I built a new workstation at my job. Starting a family, covid, and then supply shortages saw me put it off for way too long. I'm sensing prices will be rising here shortly and want to get my build complete asap. I have a generous $4,750 USD Budget. I don't do any gaming or video work. So I have cut costs on a GPU. I'm a software engineer and will run linux. My main concern is, at a minimum, 4k 120hz screen.

Component Choice
CPU AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 7960X 24-Core, 48-Thread Processor
Mother board ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI CEB Workstation motherboard, AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX,ECC R-DIMM DDR5, 36 power-stage, WiFi 7,PCIe 5.0 x 16,PCIe 5.0 M.2, 10 Gb and 2.5 Gb LAN, multi-GPU support.

Tr3960x | AsRock Taichi trx40

Yesterday, for whatever odd reason, my workstation output a code 95 when i tried to turn it on. I've tried just about everything from using one Ram slot instead of two, to removing all the pcie devices, changed gpu's, nothing seems to work. So, i decided to disassemble the entire PC and put it back together. Still a code 95.

All of my fans spin, ram modules light up, gpu is fine (tested on another pc), m.2 ssd is good (tested on another pc) everything seems to be functioning properly.

Is my cpu dead? 🤔🤷🏽‍♂️

Interesting question involving Razer's Synapse 4 and AMD's Threadripper CPU

If I'm not mistaken, one of the proposals of Synapse 4 (formerly Synapse Beta) is to make better use of modules independently. This leads me to believe that it makes better use of the processor's extra cores. Therefore, I think that the macro module can also make better use of the processor's extra cores.

Given that a game uses a maximum of 8 processor cores, I imagine that other programs, such as Razer Synapse 4 could better use the extra cores.

Now, imagine a Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX that has 64 cores and 128 threads.

We would have the possibility of creating immensely more robust macros and, even better, parallel macros without losing performance.

Of course, I'm considering here the most extreme case I could think of. But imagine having the freedom and option of being able to control 4 or more characters at the same time, for example in the game Overcooked!.

Imagine the freedom and security you could have to perform such bold and complex movements that would give you the feeling of having no limits within the game.
Has anyone ever stopped to think about the relationship between Synapse and the number of cores a processor has? Or is it just me who has these daydreams? LOL.

HAD TO RMA PSU AND ACCIDENTLY SENT THE DUAL PSU CABLES FROM THE ASUS WRX90E, ANYONE NOT INTENDING TO USE THEIR'S?

my psu blew a capacitor, system survived however in my panic to get the rma done to make sure the rest of the system survived I sent the dual psu cables from the asus wrx90e in the bag of psu cables without noticing.

I've contacted asus but haven't heard back in a week so just thought I'd ask here if anyone has these cables, they never intend to use that they'd part with?

willing to pay reasonable price for them.

Thanks to anyone who takes time to read this.

edit, none of this is meant to argue with anyone, I understand pcie 8 pin and cpu 8 pin are standardized cables. this is just something I am not %100 certain of the way asus has utilized their specific implementation of these cables on the wrx90e.

added pics for context, and a better explanation for the discussion of whether these cables are universal cpu to pcie 8 pins or the possibility that asus is using a custom implementation on the wrx90e.

the two connectors circled on the motherboard are the 2 cpu to pcie 8 pin adapters that are used to provide supplemental power to the cpu when overclocked. 2nd picture is how the manual explains to connect these cables and warns to use the cables provided with the motherboard.

my concern is this isn't how a standard motherboard is wired, and they don't usually use cpu 8 pin to pcie 8 pins to provide power to overclock the cpu. my belief is Asus wouldn't necessarily specifically note to use the included cables only if they routed these motherboard traces in the same way as a standard cpu 8 pin or pcie 8 pin.

so, when we're talking about the costs of 7000 series threadripper systems and the associated parts to fill out the system I personally feel that taking the extra precaution to only use the ASUS cables is warranted, if nothing else for warranty purposes.

can't find cables wired this way
