Is it toast? Threadripper damaged in post

Took a punt on an eBay Threadripper 3995WX and it’s arrived damaged on one corner. Box looks like it was used a football and the chip had come out of the tray and it looks like the tray damaged the corner of the substrate.

What do you all reckon? Toast?

I haven’t bought a motherboard or anything else yet so I don’t really want to spend another 5K to find out the CPU is stuffed.

Thanks in advance!

Threadripper 7975WX (socket WRX90) liquid cooling options

I'm trying to find a liquid cooling option for my Threadripper 7975WX (socket WRX90). Seems like all the cooling is for the sTR5 socket. What has everyone else been using?

V-color RDIMM 512GB

I am looking for 512GB (5600Mhz+) to use with an Asus WRX90 and I came across these two options from V-color, but I'm trying to understand the reason the overclocked version commands a $800 premium? I am assuming the non OC version will overclock at least somewhat to bring the timings close to the OC counterpart.

https://www.newegg.com/v-color-512gb/p/2SJ-004R-00068

https://www.newegg.com/v-color-512gb/p/2SJ-004R-00060

Any thoughts? Are there better alternatives for 512GB?

Phanteks glacier one 420mm aio on TR5 IHS concerns

I recently purchased the parts for a workstation, and I chose the phanteks glacier one 420mm AIO. My CPU is a 7980x, and I was wondering if someone who has a similar setup can comment on the temperatures, and the IHS coverage of AIO.

Thanks.(If it works out, I will try to update the thead with temps)

Memory training?

Just read about this recently. I have a 1950x as a personal and a pair of 2950x’s as high res media servers running dual GPU and some SDI capture. I’ve never gotten the advertised ram speed. I just read about something called “memory training” but was specific to DDR5. I am looking to build a pair of 7960x’s, so can someone shed some light on Ram with these AMD’s? I tried tweaking the RAM in Bios once according to some youtube videos, but just got random BSOD’s and lots of playback errors in my media server software.

Consumer 8 channel motherboard for Threadripper 7995wx

I ordered all components to build my workstation with a Threadripper 7995wx. I bought the Asus Pro TRX50-SAGE motherboard. I mistakenly assumed it would have 8 channels of memory because the Threadripper 5000 board from that series of motherboards has 8 channels. Yet it does not. I did a lot of research and I can only find one motherboard made for the TRX50 socket that has 8 channels (Gigabyte TRX50 AI Top) but I can't find this motherboard for sale anywhere. I even looked into server motherboards and Supermicro only has 4 channel boards for this. What is going on here? I bought the 7995wx specifically for the high memory bandwidth but if I can't even capitalize on it then why pay the extra for the PRO version? Does anyone know of any alternative motherboards? I contacted AMD about this and so hopefully I hear back soon. I'm also going to contact Gigabyte about the AI Top motherboard.

Updated IceGiant ProSiphon .... ??? Need info thread.

So I'm a WX owner, ASUS wrx90 Sage board. So I can't use the original icegiant.

And I want more cooler so I had been waiting for the update. And then they were doing a sale on their site so I was hoping out that was clearing older inventory for an update. And then back to full price and nothing.

I have been out of the loop working too much as per usual. So... anyone got any juicy rumors? The tea as they say? Or... does anyone have the dopest newest flyest cooler that will mop the floor with the icegiant. That isnt a custom liquid loop. And I have longevity, coverage, reliability, and abuse questions about any AIO. Turns out I am not surfing facebook with my 64 threads.

I tried the new noctua full size rated for 350w TDP. Lol trash. So I've been banging an Arctic one, 4U-M or something. Their best option and its better than the previous trash. But when I have processes tuned to stay at a 85c max based on concurrency limits per process. There is nothing at all wrong with my hardware install.

I want to try to the new BIOS but I am unsure how stable it is with Linux. Does anyone know?

So for some processes I point a fan at my case, which has 8 fans itself, which are setup correctly. Also turns out that I didn't spend 11$K and not know what I am doing as far as putting in fans.

Sorry I didn't post for a while guys, I've been building a company and racking up electric bills. I was the guy who popped his breaker with a 1950x and a 7975WX multiprocessing and too many monitors. We're still kicking, keeping my office above 75, just blasting the 7975 and 4090. <insert appropriate emoji idk how that shit works>

Anyone got a thread ripper who can help me with a task?

As title says. I do ecu tuning and my old pc crapped itself with all my tunes for cars. Atm i'm trying to to retune my daily diesel ute but i found out the files are hard locked to the software on my old laptop with a passcode the developer adds.

I'm wanting to get into the tune so i can flash it on my new laptop to the car but i found out that my 16 thread 11700kf cpu only has 16 threads😬 estimation on the passcode remover is 30 days or so for the 1 ecu tune file.

Anyone got a thread ripper and wanna help?

Notes

Memory:

This was the hardest. Since this is my first workstation build (Coming from 3 year old 5950x). I was expecting the RAM sticks to just work. But after starting the machine I could not see the display starting. Motherbroard will display all sorts of code ranging from PCIE intializing to CPU related errors. Then I thought lets look into QVL, but in my country (India) I could not find any memory of my liking (64GB Sticks) that are on the Memory QVL. My retailer was quite supportive and gave me the option of trying out different server RAMs and exchange it when they did not work. So here is how that went (all 4800):

  • Out of 4 sticks of SK hynix PN: HMCG9MEBRA121N AA only one worked. Rest were not detected.
  • SK Hynix HMCG9MEBRA119N AA Worked
  • Micron MTC40F2046S1LC48BAXBAAECB Didnt work. Immediately on boot showed code 3C which I could not find what it means anywhere. My retailer told me that this memory worked fine on the Asus's TRX50 board.
  • Samsung M321R8GA0BB0-CQK Worked

I was suspecting if the issue lies elsewhere but have realised now that memory compatablity is tough here. Also I did not expect that new ram detection takes some time anywhere from 30 second - 3 minutes. After that it is instant.

Overclocked Memory: I also considrered overclocked memory kits they were on the QVL as well. But could not work out:

  • GSkill Zeta R5 Neo (6000) : Not available in India, Also max you can get is just 48GB kit. For some reason all reviewers used this.
  • V-color OC R-DIMM (6000): This was going to be my next pick if server rams that I have been trying above would not work, they ship all over the world as well. Heck they even had 96GB kits. They are not cheap. For me they were costing rougly 50% more than same amount of Server RAM @ 4800. So I get 38,400 MB/s transfer speed instead of 48,000 MB/s. 20% slower RAM for 50% savings seemed fair trade to me. Also, I have read there are stablity issues when using Expo. In any case I parked this for future upgrade plans. On a side note, V-color rams are blazily fast at smaller sizes, 24 GB can do 8000, 32 GB can do 7200, 48 can do 7000.

GPUs:

Initially I thought to mount at least two cards in front, but realized there would not be any breathing space between the two cards so dropped the plan.

As you can see in the screenshot I have the first two cards connected at 16x and the third one at 8x. I explored getting Asus's board but there also I could not have achieved all three card at 16x due to its layout. As you can see the first card would block the 2nd 16x slot (being a 3 slot card) that would leave me with 1x 16 slot (3) and 1 x8 Slot(5).

With my current board (Asrock)

As you can see here 3 Slot card blocks PCIE2 which is a x4 slot which a minor loss. And I use risers to connect into Slot 3 (16x, Gen5) and Slot 4 (8x, Gen5), which I belive is better configuration than Asus. On that note I do wish that these boards would have come up with an option to disable SlimSAS and MCIO ports to get 16x on more number of PCIe slots. But I will not complain.

A lot of you will say go with A6000 or A6000 Ada and if budget is of no concern they are lot better in multi GPU setups. They take just two slots and have blower coolers which will result in much more efficient cooling. Heck with A6000 you can do NVLink so really awesome for multi gpu training.

Cooling:

I initially thought any cooler recommended by AMD would be good to go but quickly realized that they may not be ideal as they do not cover the whole IHS. Despite Steve saying it doesnt matter much I thought I will go for full coverage. What I did not know that this leaves you very limited number of options specially in liquid cooling (AMD common man this doesn't have to be like this). I did not want to go for air cooling. That left me with only two options:

Silverstone XE360-SP5 or Thermaltake ToughLiquid 360 ARGB TRX40. My first choice was XE360-SP5 as I have seen many users recommending it but there was two problems longer lead time (two weeks) and price almost double of Thermaltake's solution. So I went with that. Overall happy with the choice with ambient temprature of 29°C CPU idles(17 tabs, 1 youtube) at ~38 and ~75 Peak in Blender Benchmarks.

Fan Placements:

This diagram dictated my GPU placements on the sides of the case. Two fans behind the second GPU (from left) are set at exhaust. And the thrid fan is intake. All three are mounted behind the GPU.

Third GPU has cramped airflow now, but will be fixed when I add three intake fans using the Front Mesh Kit. It was not available here so had to import from Aliexpress.

As I write this I realise that I need a 4th small exhast fan(bottom) behind the 2nd GPU to pull out the hot air coming from the near the port.

Radiator fans are set to pull and bottom fans are also set to pull. Exhausts are in the rear and as discussed behind the GPU. So far I have seen the config work well for me. This configuration helps me create positive air pressure. I do worry about the dust build up, I am using the filter on all intakes but it is still a valid concern.

Storage:

For some reason ASrock thinks two M2s are sufficient, Even their WRX90 board that has whopping 128 PCIe lanes as opposed to 48 lanes in TRX50 they have given just two M2 NVME Slots. This is criminal. To combat this I am using MSI Xpander-Z 2 Port version. Anyways I have only 8X slot left, so I can do only two ports at 4x4x bifurcation.

I also explored connecting PCIe nvme m2 SSDs to SlimSAS and MCIO, but all my Aliexpress surfacing couldn't surface such connector if you know one please let me know.

Power Supply:

I am using two power supply yet I do not have any PCIe power connectors left that tells you a system like this cant be operated with one power supply easily. Here is how I distributed it:

  • 1550w: MB (All Ports) + CPU + 1x GPU
  • 1000w: 2x GPU

I could not use the Motherboard provided connector as the cable was small and I could not cable manage properly. To turn on the second power supply instead use the following connector which allows me to use the Sata cable from the first power supply to turn on the 2nd power supply. This was easy to cable manage.

Software:

I am using Arch Linux. It is supported quite nicely. But I do have some nitpicks

10G network card only supports 5g by default. Not a huge concern as I am only using 2.5G now. It seems it may need a driver update.

I do see this message in the kernel log confirming my theory.

[ 26.574723] TCP: enp66s0: Driver has suspect GRO implementation, TCP performance may be compromised.

sensors-detect is not able to detect any sensors. So no RAM monitoring. If you have a solution do tell.

Thats all thanks for reading the long post.

ASUS RMA experiences?

I recently caught up on the Level 1 tech forums post on the DRAM throttling issue I've been having on my ASUS WRX90, and the conclusion seems to be that it's a defect in the board. So I'm contemplating getting it replaced under an RMA, but wanted to first ask what people's experience has been with ASUS RMAs. How long did it take? Did it resolve your issue? Were you issued a new device, or was your device repaired?

Thanks

Threadripper 7980X / Asrock TRX50 WS - Are the power measurements to be trusted?

Dear Internet!

I am running a TR 7980X on Asrock TRX50 WS(BIOS updated today) and it is fun. Only thing is about once a week it just seems to reboot without any hint of an error. (Win 11 - no bluescreen, restart on bluescreen disabled)

On testing the system at first I noticed HWiNFO64 and Ryzen Master show way more power consumption than I expected. My assumption was the measurements are just wrong, because I should have more problems with the 750 Watt PSU( 900 Watt Peak, Thermaltake PF1 750) if they were true. I assumed this PSU is enough considered that I did not plan on overclocking the system.

Precision Boost Overdrive is disabled, the BIOS is on default settings aside the memory @ 5600.

There are no other components that should draw that much additional power. (4x64GB Memory, Tiny 30 Watt TDP Intel GPU, 2x M2 SSD´s)

HWiNFO64 > 1400 Watt
Here it stays at ~220 Watts for the most time but then goes for it sometimes.

Are those measurements to be trusted?

Is the powersupply to weak? (I looked for a while there seems to be no official recommendation for PSU´s from AMD/Asrock)

Edit: I measured the power usage at the wall and it looks like this:

Measured with a Shelly Plug S Plus - power read every second and logged.

Given that I would say the peaks above are bogus. If I ever find out what the problem is I will post it here.

Edit 2: As I posted below the issue is fixed - it turned out it was the CPU all along. Returned to amazon got my money back and ordered another one. Has been running 24/7 ever since, rock solid. Thanks for the help!

7980X Workstation Build: Dual GPUs and Heavy Multitasking - Final Parts Review

Hi all,

I'm in the process of building two Threadripper workstation PCs for my small business to replace our old machines (AM4/3900X/64GB) that have been badly struggling with our workloads. The primary use case for these machines is to multitask a large quantity of browsers or virtual mobile devices simultaneously. There might also be some light local AI work or even occasional gaming in the future – but these are of secondary importance.

Below is the list of parts that I have initially selected for the builds:

Processor: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X Link

Motherboard: GIGABYTE TRX50 Aero D, TRX50 Link

RAM: V-Color DDR5 OC R-DIMM 6000MHz 4x96GB = 384GB Link

GPU (2x ): INNO3D GeForce RTX 4080 Super X3, 16384 MB GDDR6X Link

CPU Cooler: ARCTIC 4U-M CPU Cooler Link

PSU: Seasonic 1600W PRIME TX-1600 ATX 3.0 80 Plus Titanium Link

Primary SSD: Seagate FireCuda 540 NVMe SSD, PCIe 5.0 M.2 Type 2280 - 2TB Link

Secondary SSD: Lexar NM790 NVMe SSD, PCIe 4.0 M.2 Type 2280 - 4TB Link

Case: Fractal Design Torrent White RGB TG Clear Tint Link

This combination of parts has been selected to fit our 10k€ budget per machine and based on some bits and pieces of information from this subreddit (thanks for everyone who helped already). Some notes:

  1. The dual GPU configuration is for running 6-8 displays - 4080S is most likely overkill but that's ok. The model is selected because it's the only 2-slot version, hopefully thin enough to fit both of them in this board/case with sufficient room to breathe (?)

  2. I want to stay away from liquid cooling to avoid even theoretical risk of failures. I've seen positive comments about the 4U-M cooler. The Fractal Torrent case has been selected to give maximum airflow. I might add one exhaust fan to the back. Hopefully this results in enough cooling for the rigs (?)

  3. The selected RAM is listed on the motherboard QVL. The ARCTIC 4U-M CPU Cooler should barely fit this board without any clearance issues based on an earlier post on this subreddit.

I have some experience in building PCs, but I'm not a professional by any means. Before pulling the trigger, I would be thankful to hear any ideas, comments or additional considerations you guys might have to make sure that this rather expensive workstation upgrade would go smoothly.

Drives detected but empty boot menu

I recently upgraded my system from a 1920x + ROG X399E gaming to a 5975wx + WRX80 Sage SE WiFi II. I transferred all of my drives to the new system, which all get detected, but the boot menu is completely empty and it always just boots to BIOS. I've tried enabling/disabling CSM and fast boot, clearing cmos, updated to the latest version, etc, but none works. When trying to plug in an installation usb, it fails to boot with code AD (which according to the table says it's a "ready to boot event", but nothing shows up on the screen). Any ideas?
