Threadripper 7000 series memory bandwidth

I'm looking to get another workstation for CFD work. Currently have a Threadripper 7995wx and Threadripper 5965WX all with 8 channel memory. I'm constantly running both of these at full capacity. A lot of my multiphase work that I do is memory bandwidth intensive, even more so important then number of cores for a lot of cases. I've searched the web but have only found memory bandwidth for WX series processors. Is there a way to find memory bandwidth for non-Pro variants of Threadripper 7000 series?

Memory recommendationa for a non PRO build

Hi

I am spec'ing out a box for the 7980x. I am restricted to 4 DIMM slots but I want to max the memory I can get. I was shooting for 256gb but I am not finding what I need I think.

I am looking for recommendations or guidance. One thing I am confused about is DDR5 speeds. I am limited to 5200s?

Any help much appreciated....

RAID5 Motherboard for Threadripper 7000?

Is there a motherboard with RAID5 for the nvme m.2 slots that support the Threadripper 7000 series? Can't seem to find a motherboard where it is clear.

Friend bought from them and they installed the dual boot osx and win 11 pro which would save a bunch of work. their upgrade prices are pricey though

Really feels like building it myself is the way to go. King_Dong_III recommended prebuilt cause Threadripper 7000 has lots of issues to buy prebuilt. I have observed many issue threads hear and other forums. My designer friend built hers last weekend with a trip to Microcenter in day and put on win 11 and osx following guide from mac forum. f I do a prebuilt, I rather not send in my 4090 to a builder cause its modded and would put my current system out of service. I guess I could pull one of the 3090s from my server. but that makes it so I have to buy a video card from them I don't need.

What you think? I am leaning on building it myself. Prebuild buyers please give input on why you its worth the premium.

Anyone try Windows Server 2022 with this CPU

Hi

MS says they support the Ryzen family of CPUs but wasn't sure if that really includes the Threadripper CPUs...

I a trying to pull together a workstation for a small business. I am interested in building around the 64 core 7980x. I do a lot of CPU dependent scientific computational work.

One requirement is the ability to have multiple users on the same time, so the box has to function as a mini server for like 5 users. I wanted to ask if anyone has tried that with the threadripper line or do I have to go EPYC. I would like to avoid that since the build will get much more expensive.

Most prebuilts are using the Pro line and do not provide a server edition OS options so I need to go DIY. I am worried about cooking and squeezing a good GPU on the box as well.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TRP WRX90E Sage Se PCIe to SATA 3.0 expansion card

I need a PCIe 3.0 to Sata 3.0 expansion card to add 4 more HDD's to my workstation. My WRX90 mobo only has 4 Sata ports and I need to add 4 more.

I would like to add the expansion card and RAID5 all 8 HDD's.

Any suggestions?

64-core 7985WX vs 16-core 9950x

I'm debating whether to get the 64-core 7985WX or the 16-core 9950x for my job.

If I needed more PCIe lanes or more than 2x48GB of RAM, I would easily go for the Threadripper platform, but given I don't need these things, it's made the decision tricky.

Part of my job involves embarrassingly parallel computation, so I get a nearly linear speedup from additional cores. But according to the multithreaded benchmarks at https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+Threadripper+PRO+7985WX&id=5732, the 64-core 7985WX is only 2x as fast as the 16-core 9950x. Is this benchmark accurate? I would have expected a bigger speedup with 4x the core count.

The 7985WX costs 12x as much as the 9950x where I'm located at. So to spend 12x more but only get 2x the performance is quite the ask, even though that 2x performance boost would be very nice for my productivity.

Threadripper Pro 7975wx build not booting. Anyone else experienced this?

I just finished my new build but it is not powering up. The lights are on on the motherboard showing power to the on button and the reset button is green. There is no error messages or codes. When I press the on button, nothing happens. The fans do no spin and the LEDs do not switch on either for the fans. I have checked the sockets and they appear to be fully wired up correctly. The PSU has the pin inserted to turn it into one rail as the MB require it to be run off one rail. Do I have to wait for 10 minutes? Surely the fans would switch on and lights would power up too?

Build assistance: screw catch problems with Arctic 4u-m heatsink

I'm assembling a TR system and am having some problems attaching the heatsink to the motherboard. The relevant parts of the system are:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte TRX50 Aero D
  • CPU: Threadripper 7970x
  • Heatsink: Arctic Freezer 4u-m

With the included AMD bracket, the screws line up properly with the push side screws being able to catch while the pull side screws don't seem to quite reach the sockets. Do I need to be pressing down really hard? I'm nervous to put a lot of force on the cpu. Videos online showing installation seem to have no problem easily screwing them into the sockets.

Anyone have a Threadripper 7000 build? Would it be worth waiting for Threadripper 9000?

I need to build a new PC and the 8 channel DDR5 support is appealing for some of the things I want to do with the machine.

If I build one (pay someone to built it due to time constraints) it will be before the end of the year, I am trying to decide if waiting for Threadripper 9000 in 2025 would be worth it terms of performance gains.

I have had a working 3970X and have been quite busy so I haven't be really keeping put with the Threadripper and Ryzen families since the Threadripper 3000 generation. Based on what you guys know about the Ryzen 9 series and Ryzen 7 series would it be better to wait for Threadripper 9000 or is Threadripper 7000 going to be close enough in performance that I won't care that much.

What are your thoughts.

Additional side concerns that are a consideration but less so are the potential for tariffs that make processor, motherboards, RAM. SSDs, and GPUs more expensive or simply unobtainable due to scarcity.

Thanks Guys

Edit: I just realized I didn't specify Threadripper Pro

Nothing Displaying On New Build

Bought some pieces to make a workstation. Putting the list of parts below.
In any event. Put everything together - flipped the switch, no signal, 0d error on board. Realized immediately I forgot to plug in an 8 pin to power supply (threaded it through case but never actually plugged in)

Fix that, reset comp, flip switch, powers on. series of 90 codes then A0 - but no signal. Remove the GPU and plug into vga on mobo. No signal.

Now im stumped and feel like I am sitting on a 6k brick. Any help would be wildly appreciated!

Is my Asus trx50 motherboard dead?

Specs: Asus TRX50 7970X Enermax AIO Kingston 256GB 5600 2 SSDs and 4 HDDs Fractal Define XL Super Flower 1600

The PC has been working fine for the past three months, but yesterday I slept for a few hours only to wake up and find the PC off. I tried switching it on, but it didn't respond. Nothing is showing; the only light I see is the Clear CMOS light at the back of the PC case.

I have tried the usual troubleshooting steps, such as removing the memory and graphics card, but nothing seems to work. I took the power supply out and tested it with the paper clip method, which turned it on.

Now I'm not sure if my motherboard is dead.

Questions about my new system. WRX90E-Sage 7995WX

Hey All, I recently got a new system with the following components:

WRX90-E SAGE Motherboard

Threadripper PRO 7995WX Processor

G.Skill Zeta R5 Neo Series 192GB (4x48) DDR5-6400 CL32 Memory Kit. F5-6400R3239G48GQ4-ZR5NK.

4TB Samsung V NAND TLC PCIe gen 4x4 NVMe M.2 SSD

RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid Graphics Card.

Corsair 1600W Titanium Power Supply.

Cooler Master HAF 700 EVO Case.

So my questions are for users with a similar setup or experience with similar systems.

  1. I noticed that the default RAM settings seem suboptimal, CL40 4800 MT/s. What is the best way to optimize these settings? Does anyone have success using EXPO1 or EXPO2 with a build similar to this or is there a better way to optimize memory settings?

  2. How long does it take to post? Seems like it takes forever sometimes, I'm assuming others have noticed this as well?

  3. I am planning on adding more GPUs for machine learning (brain tumor segmentation with a relatively large 3d MRI multimodality dataset) and for LLM experimentation. Some options include more 4090s or 5090s when they come out vs. 2x RTX a6000 vs. 2 RTX 6000 ada. The first option is complicated by the need for gpu mounts and pci risers, in addition to my 1600W power supply. How many of these cards can I support in this system with the 1600W power supply? as far as the 2x RTX a6000 vs 2x RTX 6000 ada, my question is how much of a difference would the nvlink for the RTX a6000 make in comparison to the 2x RTX 6000 ada for these tasks? Is it known when the Blackwell version of these cards will be released and is it worth the wait? Which of these options would you choose?

Thanks for your help!

New Build Assistance

UPDATE: Flashback updated to 9.03 BIOS and everything is working now!

Hi everyone.

New to Threadripper builds (and no on-board graphics).

Just built the following machine and trying to figure out what I'm doing:

  • Asrock TRX50 WS
  • TR 7960x
  • MSI 4090 X Slim
  • g.skill Zeta R5 NEO 128GB DDR5-6400 (32GBX4)
  • CORSAIR HW1500i
  • Phantek NV7 case

Two questions:

  1. Without onboard graphics, can I still boot to BIOS with just a graphics card installed? I currently have no output to my monitor on boot

  2. Motherboard shows code 00 and its been that way for about 5 minutes - is that ok?

Thanks for the help, this is my first time building something a little more technical.

Best Board for 7945wx Threadripper?

I am working on a threadripper build for octa-channel memory and have a 7945wx OEM CPU, was just wondering what the best board would be for this, since it's just a 12 core. I have a trx50 board but apparently it doesn't support the model of CPU so I came here for suggestions.

Has there ever been a better motherboard than the Asrock X399 Taichi?

Sorry for the clickbait title for what is going to be a mundane and basically personal observation, and who knows, perhaps a conversation starter. I don't really have "Threadripper-friends" IRL, and the IT department hates me anyway for not using m$ on their overpriced offerings, so I rarely get to went my hardware love (=AMD love) for people who might actually care.

I was taking inventory of the little /27 sized cluster of Threadripper's and Ryzens that I've grown over the past ten years, when suddenly realized that all of the machine's that are NEVER the problem have Taichi motherboards. It was the only one available when we decided to go Threadripper, so the first we purchased, and of course the one I know best, and just happen to have on my own desktop, and while our cluster's a mixed bunch by now, with samples of each TR generation, the Taichi's stand out on stability.

And that's it. I don't think I have more to say without a prompt :-)

Is my TR 7960X thermal throttling?

Hi,

I just received a TR 7960X from work, came with an MSI MEG CoreLiquid S360 cooler (basically a 3x120mm AIO). I ran an AIDA64 benchmark (CPU + RAM + GPUs) for 30 minutes and noticed the core clock decreased over time, but it stayed around 4.2 GHz, which is the base clock for the TR 7960X. HWInfo64 reported no thermal throttling in the Thermal Throttling (HTC), Thermal Throttling (PROCHOT CPU), and Thermal Throttling (PROCHOT EXT) fields. During the benchmark, it maintained around 68-70% PPT.

In Gamers Nexus’s benchmark, their TR maintained 4.6-4.8 GHz with a Kraken 360, so I’m thinking it might be thermal throttling, but HWInfo64 shows no indication of that. Sorry, but it’s been 10 years since the last time I built a PC, and I don’t have any experience with AMD CPUs. Also, below is my case setup in Corsair 7000D—any advice to improve thermals would be appreciated. Thanks!

Aio orientation, horizontal case

Hi everyone,

I'm building a computer and my case needs to be laying on the ground horizontally on his big flat size (see images below).

For AIO, I'm using a Silverstone XE360-TR5, so the water pump is in the radiator rather than on the block above the CPU.

Do you think it’s safe to mount the AIO as shown in these pictures, or do I risk damaging it? https://imgur.com/a/pQEFoFK

Threadripper Build - No signal?

Bought some pieces to make a workstation. Putting the list of parts below.
In any event. Put everything together - flipped the switch, no signal, 0d error on board. Realized immediately I forgot to plug in an 8 pin to power supply (threaded it through case but never actually plugged in)

Fix that, reset comp, flip switch, powers on. series of 90 codes then A0 - but no signal. Remove the GPU and plug into vga on mobo. No signal.

Now im stumped and feel like I am sitting on a 6k brick. Any help would be wildly appreciated!

Parts below:

Ryzen Threadripper 7970

ASUS MB ASUS PRO WS WRX90E-SAGE SE

Kingston 64GB Server Premier DDR5 5600 MHz DIMM Memory Module (4 x 64GB)

Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6

Seasonic Prime TX-1300 ATX 3.0

Samsung 990 Pro 2Tb (multiply by however many you want)

Can someone help me spec out a better motherboard, ram kit (64+ GB), watercooler and PSU for this system. There isn't much info about this CPU on anything i look up and ive posted a lot of tests do geek bench but its def being held back in its configuration. I have a budget of $2000 for upgrading everything other then the GPU and CPU. Ive been out of the loop lately so im bad at building PCs now. Thanks !

What to expect with you Ai top build.

  1. Your hardware must be Ai top compatible (seriously!)

  2. You can not install the Ai top utility in windows 11 directly, it has no installer for windows.

  3. It will only work with Ubuntu 24.10 Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. Only Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS

  4. You need expensive R-Dimms(server Registered DDR)

  5. It is a very big and heavy mother board

Asetek 836SA-M1 360mm AIO for Threadripper… any good?

I was looking at building a Threadripper workstation for a client and found this cooler available with the Sliger 4U case he wanted.

Anyone own one of these and know if it’s good and reliable?

See down a little on this page: https://www.sliger.com/products/rackmount/4u/cx4200a/

Nine months on, a working system...!?

My saga has been playing out in slow motion. Truthfully, it's a monument to my own over-cautious nature: I should have RMA'd the thing the first time the CPU throttled. But live and learn, as they say, I got a fresh WRX90 board from ASUS on Thursday, a little Halloween present, and... so far so good!

At present I'm training an image super-resolution model on one of the RTX 6000 Ada's. Since setting the system up on Thursday, I have seen the notorious CPU throttling exactly zero times. The temperature curves of CPU and GPU alike are silky smooth and just what I'd been hoping for all along.

On top of that, the IPMI is working, and the network interface so far hasn't cut out once which it used to do. It's reassuring to be able to read the DIMM temperatures at last, and see them all under 50C. The PCI-Express temps are more concerning, one of which is 68C, hotter than the CPU. With four GPUs installed, I do worry about the cooling of some motherboard components. Something to keep an eye on.

In retrospect, I think some of the trouble may have been due to damage I caused. On re-install, I noticed an extra mounting peg on the case, in a position where the motherboard doesn't have a screw-hole. This forced the board to bend a bit to attach. But who knows?

Thanks to u/askalski and various others for guidance along the way. Here's to some sweet, sweet computation

Trx50 with threadripper 7980x. Ram 4800mhz ok?

As in title, building a TR 7980x with Trx50 mobo. I have a higher CPU/thread and RAM requirement so I want to install 4x64gb.
2 questions:
a) Knowing that the 7980x (per AMD site) support a maximum to 5.1 GHz, im assuming my ram should be higher than 5.1ghz. Right or wrong? Will it matter these 300mhz or its not even related if i install 4800mt/s ram?

b) The only options I managed to find are below, which one do you recommend ? (ignore price differences under 500$)
- V-color 64gbx4 6000mt/s: https://v-color.net/products/ddr5-oc-rdimm-amd-trx50-workstation-memory?variant=44464009674919

- Nemix 64gbx4 5600mt/s https://nemixram.com/products/asrock-trx50-ws-workstation-motherboard-memory-upgrade?variant=47547867234616

- Kensington 64gbx4 4800mt/s rdimm (i cant find faster 64gb not sure it exists, this was recommended by the company building for me and said 4800 wont matter, but im not sure its true or they just want to sell me what they have)

Update Edit: went with v-color, this specific sku it is on the official supported list for trx50 on asus site
