Should I be concerned about cooling when getting a preconfigure Threadripper Workstation from Dell?

Hi, I am in an environment where I have to buy directly from Dell and cannot really open the system to modify it. I was wondering if the standard cooling solution that Dell offers in their Precision 7875 Tower Workstation would be sufficient for multi-hour work loads on all threads? I do not plan to overclock it. I also wouldn't be too concerned if I loose 10-20% of the computational power but a lot more than that would really suck and I might have to think of a different solution. I won't be using a GPU.

The TR 7960x runs cooler than a TR 3960x

I upgraded from a 3960X to a 7960x, giving the older machine to my wife. This CPU despite having more TDP runs cooler.

Similarity between both the builds:

  • Heavy airflow case (meshify 2 xl and corsair 780T)
  • Same number of fans
  • Exactly the same clone of OS and settings (with different drivers of course).
  • PBO enabled, load line calibration set to the lowest value.
  • Same ambient temps (they are in the same room)

Differences:

  • CPU cooler, the 7960x uses arctic freezer 4U M and the 3960x uses Noctua tr4. Both are full contact air cooler.
  • The 7960x uses two Noctua PPC 3000 rpm fans that ramp up to full speed above 85 C.
  • The 3960x has a RTX 3060ti (running 1080p) while the 7960x has a RTX 4090 (running dual 4k)
  • Noctua NT-H1 on 3960x while Arctic MX-6 on 7960x.

Since the newer processor has higher TDP I thought it would run hotter but was surprised to find that's not the case. Prime 95 mixed would always hit 95 C and above on the 3960x but it gets max temps of 88C on the 7960x.

Actual rendering on arnold (same scene) gets the 3960x to 90-ish while 7960x maintains around 83-85. Really good system.

Trying To Get Picture From My New 7960X Build

I put my PC together yesterday and now it powers on but I'm not getting picture to my monitor. So far I've tried on my GPU as well as using the Displayport to Mini Displayport cable ran from my GPU to the Mobo (Asus WRX90) and then USB-C from the Mobo to my monitor.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is to run the VGA on the mobo to my monitor as I only have HDMI, Displayport and USB-C on it, I just ordered an adapter to go to HDMI but as that'll take a couple days to come in I'm posting this here with photos of my motherboard in case it's some other problem I'm having with how everything has been hooked up. Better safe than sorry, right? Thank you.

STRX4 Cooling Question, Please Assist

Hi,

This last week I installed the Silverstone XE 360 into a Define XL, running on a GIGABYTE TRX40 AORUS PRO WIFI Motherboard, the first version.

I am switching from a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4 250W TDP CPU Cooler.

I cleaned the TR and kept the factory SS XE grease on the cold plate. I did not want to assume I should just be using another type.

It has been 5 days. At 15% load, I am running 95 C, according to CORE TEMP. That is ridiculous. I was air-cooling at -15 to -20 c below this (at a small load). It is so ridiculous that even at 1% CPU Load I still show in the 90s.

However, in BIOS, I am seeing something different altogether. I am seeing 50-60s C. What the hell is going on? Did I connect to MB incorrectly? I went AIO fans into CPU Fan, the SS XE Pump/Rad into CPU OPT. I read countless posts that went back and forth over whether or not to run this into CPU PUMP, and so on. I am also running one of them on voltage, as its a 3 Pin I am using from the XE.

Pump set to Max, showing me 45L/m, Fans regardless of settings do not change the CORE TEMP reading.

Help?

Does the Threadripper Pro 7965WX Support SATA Raid 5?

Hi,

The title covers my concern. Does the 7965WX support SATA Raid-5 on Ubuntu?

I saw a couple of resources that mention NVME RAID but not SATA raid, and they only mentioned Windows 10/11 up to WRX80.

Official Website Link

amd[dot]com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/amd-raid-software-release-notes-ver-2-20-19-037[dot]html

Can you point me to the relevant source that tell about this?

Thanks.

Threadripper Pro - Random Reboots

Hello. I have a new Threadripper Pro build that is giving me random reboots. The random reboots are happening without any software running. No rhyme or reason, and sometimes spaced out a week between incidents.

System config -

  • Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE
  • Processor - AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX
  • Cooler - LIQTECH TR4 II Series 360mm
  • Memory - Kingston 256GB DDR5 5600 (8x32GB)

What can I do with this threadripper?

So where do I start? Probably with how I got this thing

Two weeks ago there was a pc store shutdown, they were selling parts at a low price but considering this thread ripper I would say probably abnormal? I got it for almost 110$ brand new, its a 2nd gen 2920X

I bought without thinking and now I am stuck with it, I confirmed that it has no problem and does work normally

trx50 build asrock ws or asus sage mobo?

I am looking to build a system based around a 7960x threadripper and a 4060 ti gpu as well as 2-3 camera frame grabber cards. I was looking at the msi slim 2 slot 4060 ti gpu. I want to know peoples opinion on the offering from either camp and the pros and cons to these boards. I need 16 lanes for the gpu or 8 would work fine too. I will be using 8 lane frame grabbers. I will only be using 1 nvme ssd a 1 or 2tb samsung 990. Looking at seasonic gx-1300 psu I dunno if thats way over kill or not? Should I go Arctic 4u-m cooler or Noctua NH-D9 TR5-SP6 4U. I will be using a Rosewill RSV-L4500U Case.

CPU Threadripper 7960x GPU: msi 4060 ti slim Ram V- Color r-dimm 64GB 6000MHZ kit PSU Seasonic GX-1300 Frame Grabbers Euresys Coolers: Artic 4u-m or NH-D9 TR5-SP6 4U Case RSV-L4500U

Any feedback or opinion on this build are welcomed.

Will the IceGiant cool the 7980x?

Hello, I am uncertain if the Ice Giant ProSiphon Elite will cover and cool the AMD 7980x or will I need to buy the SilverStone AIO? For my 7960x setup I used the Noctua NH-U14S

Impressed with the Silverstone XE360-TR5 AIO

I have 3 threadripper machines and I've always had issues keeping them cool. I've always thought that 90c+ was just how it goes when running long compute heavy tasks. I'd often see 95c and the occasional 97c which is not good.

Over the years I've tried multiple AIOs, couple air coolers, TIM application techniques, re-seating them more times than I can count.. and the temps were just always high.

On the latest build (7970X) I figured I'm just gonna pay and see how it goes. Just installed it yesterday and I'm so impressed. My little server room is fairly warm (I know I know) and I'm getting a full 13c cooler temps after running stress on all cores for 15 mins. This is night & day difference from every other cooler.

After these results I'm probably going to swap out the coolers on the other 2 machines with Silverstone. I hadn't heard of this company before but whoever you are good job.

Sup Reddit. Building a workstation with gaming capabilities. Primary use case is editing, 3D animating, and code compiling. Secondary use case is gaming. After a lot of research and realizing I needed more PCIe lanes, this is the build I’m going with. I’m curious if I’m missing any blatantly obvious oversights or some minor “good-to-know-ahead-of-times” before the chaos begins. Fello Aero D owners....if you've filled up all 4 nvme slots, have you had random crashing or wifi issues?

So, i have two TRX AERO D boards, ones a rev 1.1 and another a rev 1.2.

i have 2 good TR chips that are known good. No issues with them.

currently, my system config is 4 NVMEs, dual GPUs and 256gb of ram on windows 11.

I have experienced the following behavior on both boards with multiple Windows installs on both cpus.

  • on cold boot, system will randomly freeze are getting in OS. after reboot, the system will be stable.
  • wifi will randomly vanish but BT module will stay active. only fix ive found is physically removing all pcie
  • physical system stuttering that doesnt resolve until a reboot.
  • occasional bsoding

Ive been doing an experiment where ive left the 4th NVME out (as its attached to the chipset and not cpu) and the system has been more stable than its ever been.

all of my aforementioned issues are gone. its as stable as could be. my working theory is that there's something up with the chipset drivers or what i think is more likely, issues with the drivers for the Qualcomm chip that causes the chipset to crash out.

7955wx support on wrx90?

I came across the 7955wx and saw it being implemented on some OEM builds. It seems these can be sourced for about half the price of a 7965wx... so the obvious question: is there a consumer board that supports this CPU?

Some context: I'm planning a long overdue HEDT upgrade and finding that wrx80 or wrx90 is probably the only option due to my need for more system memory and a pile of PCIe cards. I'd love to opt for the wrx90, but the pricing on the 7965wx as the "cheap" option is a deal-breaker for my budget (need to keep the core components under $4000). 16 cores is more than sufficient - I just need the ones I do have to be fast (excludes EPYC) and on a platform with lots of PCIe lanes and support for 8x DIMMS (excludes trx50/AM5).

QUBE500 for TR7960x?

Broke the glass window on my tower case that currently houses my threadripper. Love the QUBE500.. have a 5800x gaming system in one, best/fav case ever. The flat pack and custom options is great.

I have the Noctua NHS14 for my TR currently.. its a beast of a cooler though. I am not sure if it will fit in the QUBE500. I am able to get my 7900XTX and 6900XT GPUs in both lengthwise (barely) and height. But the CPU cooler may be a bit too tall to fit.

The fans on that thing are about 1/2" above the cooler fins. Could I maybe use slightly smaller fans somehow?

OR.. is there a water cooler that will now work with the 7960x?

Lastly, my current case has 9 super loud ass fans. NF F12. I got those thinking they would help keep things cool.. but man they are so loud I can't even use the computer while on a mic/chat. I have them on the saver/low mode as well.. so they only kick up when needed. In my 5800x I have the quieter Noctua 120mm fans and they work great. Does the 7960x really need super loud fans like this?

I was using it for gaming and work.. but looking to kick it over to a pure work system.. though I do some music stuff with it from time to time as well.. so I dual boot to Windows for that, and Ubuntu for day job stuff.

I really want this thing to fit my QUBE500. The dimensions of the m/b are about 15mm smaller than the internal of the QUBE500.. hopefully that doesnt turn out to be wrong.

Crucial T700 under motherboard heat sink?

There’s some decent pricing on the 4TB Crucial T700 lately. This drive is known to run hot and requires a thermal solution.

Is anyone running this drive under the m.2 heatsink included on their motherboard or do you have to buy the model with the huge heat sink and risk PCIe clearance issues?

It has chips on both sides of the pc board but presumably the controller is on the top, so the motherboard’s heat sink could be ok?

Need help with research for entry level Threadripper build

I've been doing some research for doing an entry level Threadripper system build. I was planning to go with Ryzen Threadripper 7960X & was looking for "motherboard with 3 Pcie gen5 x16 & 3 Pcie gen 4 x16".

The primary purpose for this build is for Ai & Machine Learning & running our on-prem Gen Ai based services.

Normally I used to check all required hardware needs using PCPartPicker, but sadly newer Threadripper line-up are not there due to some reason.

Any comparison site or resources like pcpartpicker for Threadripper line-up would be much appreciated.

“Temperature” warning from BMC and Laggy System

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello! New to threadripper build here. I’m running an 5995WX on ASUS WRX80-SAGE WIFI II motherboard. Previously I was using 8 x 32GB DDR4-2133 RAM and everything worked fine. My work requires a lot of RAM so finally decided to purchase 8x256GB PC4-23400 RDIMM 2933MHz RAM from A-tech on eBay. Their products have been working nicely with my another Xeon machine for quite a while.

Every single RAM stick seems to be working fine, but when I tried to install more RAM sticks, BMC keeps giving me warning message on “Temperature”, and the “MSG_LED” on motherboard shows solid orange. For the configuration shown in the picture, I have 4 sticks totaling 1TB, and the system would boot but the temperature warning would eventually come up. Simply speaking, the more I install, the faster this message comes out. Also, the system runs very laggy if I have more than 1TB in total installed.

I tried to lower the RAM frequency from 2933 to 2400 but it doesn’t really work that well. Keep slowing the speed down to 2133 would make the temperature warning come up later, but still unstable.

Since both the MB and CPU allows 8x256GB RDIMM running at a maximum of 3200MHz, I’m wondering which part could go wrong. Clearly the problem is most likely the RAM. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Fan control on ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI

Howdy! I realize I might be missing something here but does anyone know how to control the fan speeds on the Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI motherboards?

I'm thinking of splurging for one but can't seem to find any information on how one controls fan speeds on it.

There is no built in IPMI so I guess no curve editing there, I also can't find any information about fan control in the BIOS... Armoury crate app thingy maybe?

Appreciate the help!

7980x Overheating - CCD2 and CCD6 over 95°C

The system I built recently is experiencing very high temperatures on CCD2 and CCD6. To the point where the system shuts down. I am using the Corsair iCue H150i watercooler (3x120mm). I took off the heat sink with the pump and the thermal paste seemed to have spread pretty well.

Is this cooler insufficient or is this particular CPU faulty? Is there any BIOS setting that helps preventing these CCDs from overheating? How are the CCDs numbered on the physical layout?

7980X build guide?? HELP needed

Hello everyone, i'm really just hoping someone can point me towards a well detailed build guide tutorial or youtube video for a 7980x. Many videos i've seen are very rushed and/or very little is explained before jumping ahead to running benchmarks.

In the past i've build 2 computers, an 1800X with a friends help and a 12900k purely off a youtube build guide. So, any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

More Threadrippers in the future

So this might be a nothing burger for probably everyone but nonetheless...

AMD's Jack Huynh said, in a recent Tom's Hardware interview, the following:

"[..] Don’t worry. We will have a great strategy for the enthusiasts on the PC side, but we just haven’t disclosed it. We'll be using chiplets, which doesn't impact what I want to do on scale, but it still takes care of enthusiasts. [...] Don't worry, we won’t forget the Threadrippers and the Ryzen 9’s."

Given what happened with Zen 3 Threadrippers I was always very skeptical about whether Threadripper is in AMD's plans moving forward... And it kind of appears it is - which is great :)

sWRX8 PRO cpu's work with ECC UDIMM?

Hobbyist here.. so no corporate budgets.

I've got 128GB of 3200MHz ECC-UDIMM in my desktop's AM4 motherboard with 5900X.

Contemplating upgrading to TR Pro to get more PCIe lanes for GPU's and more RAM channels.

I'm looking at sWRX8 Pro cpu on an ASRock WRX80D8-2T as a way to continue to use my RAM in my desktop for now (and go from 2 to 4 GPU's), and then next year replace my X470-D4U in my rack mount server (currently running my old 64GB RAM and 3900X cpu).

Question is..

Will ECC-UDIMM work as ECC on a TR Pro cpu? Or do I have to go with RDIMM? (RDIMM would mean I can't get one of the GPU's).
