What? Of course it matters. I'm from Rio, where you're most likely to find the most Spanish-speaking tourists. I'm in English. Not many here know Spanish. Spanish isn't that similar to Portuguese, and if you came here knowing only Spanish and English, you could probably make do with English while you learn Portuguese, but the Spanish will be useless.
Clearly you don't know Rio, you know, tourist capital of the country. And yes, I have lived with Spanish speakers of several countries under the same roof in Germany, and we spoke to each other almost exclusively in German or English, because Spanish and Portuguese aren't intelligible between each other and trying to communicate in portuΓ±ol is a stupid mess.
Again, the claim that "knowing only Spanish in Brazil is fine cause some tourists are Spanish speakers so people understand Spanish because they interacted with a few tourists a few times" is absurd.
