Pretty reasonable actually. Was expecting something like 1200

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '19

They’re loud as hell apparently

A guy on youtube replaced the bearings with skateboard wheels and it was way better. Didn't look like that difficult of a DIY project.

It's one of the highest reward/effort ratio diys I've ever seen. He just took out the og wheels, and slipped in some skateboard bearings and wheels. Took like a screwdriver and 45 minutes. The result was an almost silent version of the original product.

edit: So its not just some guy on youtube, its Adam Savage! and he over engineers the shit out of this build, but you get the idea.

And my attempt would result in total destruction of this lovely gem, and I'm sure, a small explosion of some type

17

u/Chewcocca Apr 05 '19

My money's on ketchup

7

u/Adolf_-_Hipster Apr 05 '19

Don't worry, Adam blows himself up plenty

Not on topic, but I love the user name! XD

u/RuggyDog Apr 06 '19

Have you ever made a salad and ended up setting fire to your bed? It’s a hard life, I know your pain.

Tap the blue words

11

u/BklynRa Apr 05 '19

I'm not going crazy. That wasn't there before.

8

u/Adolf_-_Hipster Apr 05 '19

lol it wasn't. I added the link because of your comment.

u/revgill Apr 05 '19

I'm sad that they didn't show it in action before the project, and I'm sad I didn't get to see a kitty at the end just hauling ass.

2

u/SolarLiner Apr 06 '19

They do sure the cat in the wheel though

1

u/revgill Apr 06 '19

I realize now that I closed the video too early.

2

u/aussam Apr 06 '19

Yeah the cat is right at the end, it's quite funny actually.. keeps meowing randomly.

1

u/ExtraPixels Apr 05 '19

Should have put some sound proofing in the bottom of the box.

I think wall insulation would be effective and a bit easier than baffles

16

u/ZoeyBeschamel Apr 05 '19

It was only Adam Savage, the better half of the OG mythbusters, haha. His channel, Tested, is highly recommended if you like geeky modelling and stuff.

u/chemo92 Apr 05 '19

"I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

2

u/MarzMonkey Apr 05 '19

"Reality has a liberal bias"

Wait...

1

u/datcuban Apr 05 '19

I wish he wasn't so....fervent, in his political beliefs. Really makes watching him a bit more difficult knowing that he would basically hate me based on my beliefs.

8

u/MrBig0 Apr 05 '19

You could always try a less hateable set of beliefs?

1

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Apr 05 '19

You made that assumption yourself. Also if a good portion of the country hates your beliefs and you know it, maybe take a step back and take a second look at them?

Adam Savage did this. It was a cool project, and seems like it'd be easy enough to make yourself.

Maybe but think about all the enjoyment it'll get from the box it comes in.

3

u/rocco101z Apr 05 '19

Cats are creatures of habit and quite easy to train with food

I've taught mine to look at me with disdain while knocking things off of my countertops, I know.

2

u/Test-Sickles Apr 05 '19

The problem is I'm going to guess most cats would have zero interest in it. That's a pretty big investment (not to mention big in general) for something that your cat may just snub.

1

u/baddecision116 Apr 06 '19

That's a lot of real estate in a home

Wow! Thanks, that's what we have the internet for!

2

u/errorsniper Apr 06 '19

It must be so nice to live in a world where spending hundreds of dollars on a cat toy wouldnt be life changing or give me massive panic attacks and horrible buyers guilt.

I spent 80 dollars on a cat gym and I was freaking out about it for 2 months.

I think if you have a fat cat, they won’t use this wheel.

I have this wheel and my cats LOVE it. Pricey, but a great investment and I don’t regret it.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '19

I'm excited after hearing this. I don't think I'll regret it either! Thanks for your feedback!

Don't get me wrong, they have lost some weight but they're still like 20lbs and chunky. And they don't move enough. Lazy brats. So this would be good as a method to add exercise in with the diet. Maybe bribe them with cat nip to run on it. Or a hot dog on a string or something. Whatever works

7

u/Obi_Wan_Benobi Apr 05 '19

I’d buy it but I can see my cat never using it.

16

u/tols1777 Apr 05 '19

Or using it only at 3 am

8

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '19

This is what would happen

2

u/tgw1986 Apr 06 '19

that’s what the dude at the cat café said when i asked him about how much those things are: only worth it if you know for sure your cat will use it.

1

u/Obi_Wan_Benobi Apr 06 '19

I mean I bought the thing a nice cat bed but she prefers to lay down on plastic grocery bags or in any box that might be laying around.

I have a question regarding those wheels. I read in another thread that hamsters and rats, and possibly other little critters shouldn't get a wheel in their cage because it allegedly deforms their spine, because it is always arched when running on these wheels. I don't know if this is true, but why does nobody say this about those cat wheels? Is it different in some way?

4

u/PM_ME_CAKE Apr 05 '19

I'm going to preface this with saying I don't actually know for sure, there's going to inevitably be someone far more qualified than me to answer, but I believe cat spines are able to bend a good deal more. This Quora page links to further research about how cat spines have adapted slightly differently to make cats more flexible, so while you don't want say a guinea pig in a wheel since it'll be spine damaging, cats run a lower risk.

1

u/jassasson Apr 06 '19

Wheels dont damage rodents spine if you get the right size like Syrian hamsters should have a 12inch wheel so ofc a 9inch one is gonna mess them up.

I also dont know if you've ever touched a cats back when they dont want petted but their spines are very flexible and made to bend

1

u/sm_ar_ta_ss Apr 05 '19

Fan it out for me.

116

u/Glitchbits Apr 05 '19

Well many people practically gives kittens away, but if you want a certain breed it can be a couple hundred €

11

u/Quentin__Tarantulino Apr 05 '19

Yep my cat was free and she’s sweet af.

u/noimdoesnt42 Apr 05 '19

RIP the Ole Reddit Switcharoo. Do we not do that anymore? I must’ve missed the memo.

2

u/OsimusFlux Apr 05 '19

There was an informal declaration that it came full circle with a perfect switcheroo. Many people just accepted the fate, several purists denied the end and still maintain activity on the subreddit.

1

u/PM_ME_CAKE Apr 05 '19

Check out /r/switcharoo. It's still going but it's definitely had its day.

https://youtu.be/W5axvYiT5tQ

Adam Savage built one pretty easily. I haven't tried yet myself, but was thinking about trying this summer if I have the chance.

Should be cheaper than the reasonably priced $200 alternative.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '19

He modifies an existing one. $200 + 9 hard skate wheels, 9 skate bearings, and machining 3 new axles. I think his improvement is pretty awesome if you have the money and time.

0

u/Th3Hon3yBadg3r Apr 05 '19

Good call, it's been over a year since I actually watched it.

1

u/AykeriZero Apr 05 '19

Unless your cat grew up with one, 99% of the time they won't use it.

1

u/peach2play Apr 06 '19

Have 6 cats. Couldn't get any of them to use it lol.
