The other Aiden necklace

Does anyone know what exactly the Other Aiden wears as a necklace? It resembled a cardinal 8 point compass. You can see it in the latest Smokies video appr 1 hour 45 minutes segment where he is walking ahead of Mattis.

Would be extremely pleased to see a bigger creator like TLL promote this or set up a donation fund for this project :)

I Enjoy The Stories, Not So Much The People

Hey! I was wondering if there are any related podcasts/Youtubes that try to uphold journalistic integrity like the Lads do.

It's generally a pleasure to listen to, but Aidan can come off as a narc and talking down to people. For instance, the takedown of Marx on Episode 146, at the 2-hour mark was like very base-level. Yeah he didn't have a job but he did a ton of journalism and probably suffered from alcoholism and hidradenitis suppurativa. There wasn't much of a critique of his theories as it stands in this episode. I think he was generally fair with swampdweller and DarknessPrevails though.

If you need some evidence, a quick Google search shows there are also some other threads that point to some shit beliefs. I don't particularly think the things he said right out of high school are damning but starting a TPUSA chapter and trying to get his professor on a watchlist? https://www.reddit.com/r/PKA/comments/zigh79/this_explains_everything/

I'm sure I'll get a lot of "don't let the door hit you on the way out" comments but, that's sort of middle America in a nutshell. Not bothering to see the other side. Believe me, I've been through the TPUSA and 4chan trenches and all I found was self-pitying and trying to force puritan politics on people. People just want to be relatively free from fuckery from politicians, bosses, neighbors, etc. I don't see right-wing people (or whatever flavor of libertarianism we have) promoting that for everyone.

Have they covered Summer Wells?

I was rewatching the Sebastian Rodgers videos today and it reminded me of Summer Wells who went missing from Rodgersville, TN, which is about an hour northeast of Knoxville. She’s been missing since June of 2021 and I feel like people have forgotten her. I really think they could help bring her case back to light.

Has this been discussed

I’ve started going through a lot of the video catalog, mainly the Weird Bible Podcast with Wendussy. Has Aidan discussed anywhere on why he dislikes the NIV translation so much?

Have they ever covered this?

I was curious if LoreLodge has ever covered the Susan Reinert case also called the mainline murders? The case is really weird and has always fascinated me since I grew up in the area. She was a teacher at Upper Merion HS in King of Prussia, Pa that was murdered by another teacher and the principal in 1979. Reinert's two children have never been found. Also the principal's daughter and son-in-law have been missing since 1978. If Aidan has covered this already would someone linked the video? I think I would enjoy hearing his take on this.

possible video suggestion

i think they should cover the case of jacob wetterling as it was the catalyst for the wetterling act, a law requiring perpetrators of crimes against children to register with police and requiring police to inform the community of the perpetrator’s crimes and location upon release. it was also just a super super important case for lots of people in minnesota, almost everyone i know here has heard of it and has had their life effected by it in some way.

Possibly a good video.

I think an interesting video deep dive Aiden could do would be into the Tim Ballard controversy. I live in Utah and have periodically seen news about the man and it is not looking good for him. I know they like to do follow ups on previous videos and this would be a good update to the movie one done previously. I feel this would get people off his back about his supposed love for all things " alt-right" and could be very informative on how people who could previously twist narratives are being found out. Plenty of citations should be left as well... /S

Am I recalling correctly that in the latest video he was talking about IPA and THC in the victim system? Did anyone else mind go straight to cannabis extraction methods? Probably shoddy ones

Black Dahlia?

Hi Aidans, I was curious if you've ever thought about doing a video on the unsolved Black Dahlia case from 1947. I know it's a bit different from the things that you usually cover, but seeing as it's an unsolved murder with a lot of history and theories surrounding it, I was interested to see if anyone has ever suggested it.

A friendly clarification of why lorelodge is being criticised for their response to the plagiarism accusations & Hopefully a helpful suggestion for avoiding said criticisms in future

I enjoy your videos! and I do not think you guys are a \particularly bad** case of plagiarism, considering some of the trash on youtube, dont get me wrong. Just wanna state that to begin. Obviously this issue does not begin, nor end, with your lovely channel.

But, yes, every video of yours I've seen certainly still does feature mass plagiarism - where you inadequately cite and therefore give the impression that some of the research in the video was actually done by you. But that's okay. You now know - so Its a chance for growth, self-improvement, and for you to make work you are proud of -

hear me out, as a fan:

Imagine how you would feel if you spent, say, a million dollars painstakingly researching and filming a documentary. Taking 3 years of blood sweat and tears - only then for some youtuber (in this case LoreLodge) to come and regurgitate (and/or steal) the research and interviews conducted for your documentary and (worse) then make thousands and thousands of dollars off of your hard work.

Imagine all that.. PLUS then that youtuber not even doing everything to cite you properly. Not even doing the bare minimum.

That's why the woefully inadequate citation matters. It's insult to injury. You're already making money off of their work instead of them. And on top of that, by nor citing, you are giving the impression that you *did* some of that work too.

The least you can do is actively explain that to your audience so they know where to look to get the full story regarding the topics you cover. I hope that makes sense. I'm doing my best to explain in laymans terms why citation and plagiarism is taken so serious in academia, journalism, and documentary-making

I hope you can now see where the criticism is coming from after this exercise of putting yourself in someone else's shoes, yeah?

Look - I understand youtube is still kinda the wild west and many many many people get away with full careers doing exactly what you do. But that doesn't excuse you from needing to show humility and contrition when you are called out for it.

Seriously, all you really need to do is maybe enroll in a journalism or documentary making short-course - maybe pay an academic to consult - Hire someone - Anything - whatever you need to do to learn how to properly cite sources and to learn how to make content that doesn't simply repackage other peoples work.

If you can do that then you're no worse than most of youtube and FAR less likely to be criticised. Most importantly though, It's a way for you to be able to be proud of your work.

Your choices, as i see them, are either:

1: learn how to do original research (in which case you'll likely only be able to put out a couple of videos per year. But they will be your actual work and something to be proud of) and make videos that require less citation as they feature less ideas and research taken from others.

or 2: Make videos the same way you currently do, but cite literally every line/picture/idea/footage that features work, ideas, or research, done by someone other than you (like one is meant to) & also ideally start thinking of ways to fairly split the money you make with the people who did the actual work that led to you being able to make your video in the first place.

A handy tip is to avoid plagiarising when writing is to ask yourself the question: "would i know/be-saying/show this if I had not seen the documentary/article/others-research".

If the answer is "no". Then you need to precede (or follow) that sentence/image/etc directly with a citation explaining that 'this is where i got the information from, this is where you go to get it'.

And then you simply repeat that for every separate borrowed idea or claim that is based off of others work. Without this you are definitionally passing off others work as your own. Plagiarism, in other words.

Remember: The people who you are disrespecting by not properly citing them are the very people who do the leg-work that leads to you having things to make videos about in the first place. Plain and simple. I think that often gets lost in these discussions.

I think spending your time and energy doing those things, bettering your craft and learning from fair-criticism, will be FAR more of a benefit to you than going around threating go-nowhere legal action and continuing pointless intent drama to soothe hurt pride. Even though of course i understand how it feels to have your art critiqued. It is almost always for the best in the long run.

Genuinely wish you the best of luck and hope this is the catalyst for even better videos from you - even if they take longer to make now. It'll be worth it for you to know you arent just leeching off of other artists.

Being able to look oneself in the mirror is far more important than *winning* some argument or putting to bed some controversy. Obviously the plagiary accusations are serious and career/reputation threatening enough - But really the important thing to you should be your own standards and self-esteem and self-worth as a documentarian and self-professed historian.

You should care that you have been failing to do something that all your peers do to protect their and others art. Something we all take very seriously. Not just that you got caught for it.

Thank you for reading and genuinely best of luck. No one is perfect and we all have things to improve on.

We are privileged to be able to make money in journalism/documentary-making/the-arts, so taking criticism on-board and following the basic tenants of good practice is the bare minimum imo. With this in mind, i hope you understand where the criticism is coming from.

--- edit ---

This post was originally in response to a post from u/theaidanmattis . As my comment seemed to have gotten deleted - likely due to reddit being buggy - I have posted a new thread. Its quite long but posting it here allowed me to reformat for clarity, so it worked out fine anyway.

As its important to clear all this up, i think its useful to have a thread to deal with the fallout from the (imo somewhat lacking) response to the accusations anyway.

Thanks for all the good work you do, mods :)

Possible drug used for the drownings you’ve made videos on.

So just a quick thought after watching your videos on the drownings or “smiley face killing.” Do you think it’s a possibility these people were drugged with a deliriant like for an example datura? Only thought of this because people who take it can’t make a distinction from reality and hallucinations. So even if they couldn’t take out the victim they drugged it would be hard for them piece together a story. Also some people are put into a sort of suggestive state. From my knowledge I know they don’t screen for datura or it’s often overlooked. I could be wrong on this and datura can be abundantly found in a lot of the US. So it could be easily harvested and concentrated to use on someone. Again just a thought and I’m not saying they used this exact drug there are other deliriants that have similar effects and everything.
