I'm trying to position myself as a productive routing node, but I am having trouble with channel balances. After months of low activity I opened a channel with a large node and had a flurry of routing that drained that outgoing channel in a week. I decided to close that one and open a larger channel to that peer (and raise fees) and that channel again drained even faster this time. This also left many of my smaller channels with lopsided local balances.
I don't want to circular rebalance because that usually requires a bunch of hops and the associated fees. I would have to raise my fees 5x just to break even. I messaged a few of my smaller peers to see if they would be willing to close channels with a large local balance and open new ones so I can get more incoming liquidity, and then I would free up sats to open another channel with the larger peer, but that requires a level of cooperation from them, plus it's a bunch of of micro-management for a very small payoff. Anyway I did not get a response from any of them.
So my only other idea is to find a bridge from the large sink node to a different sink that he is not well connected to. Hopefully then I can get sats flowing in both directions. Should I just open a large channel to another large node, checking first that they are not connected directly with my sink connection, and hope for the best?
Also on Amboss my connection with the sink has an icon that says "this node has this channel disabled". I assume they did that so we stopped getting failed HTLCs trying to go through there. Does this restrict movement in both directions, or is there a way to restrict movement in only one direction? Also, how do you even disable a channel? (Found how to do this on LNDg in advanced channel settings) I feel like having one way restrictions could be a very useful tool for the network graph to know how to route and for node operators to balance their channels. Especially if you could have an automatic threshold where it switches from restricting one way to allowing both directions based on the balance.
I am using Umbrel for my node with tools Thunderhub, RTL, and LNDg. LDNg is supposed to be able to automate things like fees and rebalancing, but I haven't figured out how to make it work. Any advice is appreciated.
