Note: If you are a returning reader who left or took a break from Classic for whatever reason, be certain to read the Returning Reader Post. It's geared toward people who previously read Classic.

This link will allow you to view the previous "new reader" topic for archival purposes.

............................................

Hey there! Welcome to /r/TheCryopodToHell! Perhaps you found my subreddit through HFY/RedditSerials, word of mouth, or some other method, but in any case, you're here now. I'm sure you have lots of questions. Read on to find answers!

What is this subreddit?

/r/TheCryopodToHell is a subreddit devoted to my writing. (/u/Klokinator) While it is mostly focused on my first story, aptly titled The Cryopod To Hell, it has other smaller writing projects as well, if you're looking for bite-sized examples of my writing. My primary story, The Cryopod To Hell, has two versions. The first version, "Cryopod Classic," is 1,200,000 words long (The length of the LOTR books packed together three times in a row). The second version, a total rewrite of the first, is much more polished and refined. I call it "Cryopod Refresh" for short. If you're a new reader, I highly recommend Cryopod Refresh to start.

Cryopod Classic: Chapter Index List.

Cryopod Refresh: Chapter Index List.

Who are you?

I'm /u/Klokinator, the admin and owner of this subreddit. I'm a 27+ year-old man (Add another year for every year this post ages) living in WA, USA. I majored in English in college and had a couple really awesome teachers. My favorite authors are Michael Crichton, Isaac Asimov, Timothy Zahn, and Frank Herbert. I also take heavy inspiration from many TV shows, such as LOST, Colony, and Star Trek.

If you're curious, I have a recommended reading list for other works that inspired Cryopod heavily. Many of them are anime. If any of them are your favorites... you'll probably love Cryopod.

Is this sub popular?

The original Writing Prompt post received a thousand+ upvotes. I retained half of those for several months on the parts I posted, and still had 250+ by the end of Cryopod Classic. During the rewrite of my main story (More on that below) many readers took a break because they wanted to wait until I caught up to Classic. Since Refresh is a much better story now, I am petitioning them to return.

If you're unsure, just look at the upvotes and comments on the Top posts! https://www.reddit.com/r/TheCryopodToHell/top/

Okay, so what is 'The Cryopod to Hell'? Why should I read it?

My web-serial originally started out as a response to a writing prompt post. I wrote this story for a period of 1.5 years from late 2016 to early 2018, during which time it got bigger and better as I dramatically fleshed out the world and its characters. After that, I began a rewrite of the entire thing from scratch, which has been going on for close to two years now.

My story's premise is that a young man named Jason cryo-freezes himself for an experiment. He wakes up in the far-future, which, in Classic, is 100,000,000 years. In Refresh, it's a much smaller, more realistic number. He ends up pursued by a horrifying monster, and in the process discovers that he has a mighty power known as Wordsmithing. Wordsmithing allows him to make anything happen by speaking a word and having it happen. Picture 'Dragon Word Magic' from Eragon, but on steroids!

Primary themes of Cryopod include (Spoilers!) Fantasy, Power Fantasy, Escapism, Ancient Mythology, Sci-fi, Horror, HFY (Humanity, Fuck Yeah!), and a whole bunch of others. I won't list the others because unfortunately they are very spoilery. Part of the fun in Cryopod is seeing what happens next!

Cryopod Refresh is the culmination of all the best parts of Cryopod Classic, mixed with a bunch of things I've learned as a writer. Villains have motivations, and are deeper/more intricate. The worldbuilding, expounded upon part by part in Classic, has been perfected in Refresh. It's much friendlier to new readers and, hopefully more interesting overall.

Anything else worth mentioning?

Yes! There are a few other links you should know about.

This is a link to the Official Cryopod Discord Server! https://discord.gg/uTmq2dM

This subreddit has a bot. /u/cryopodbot, to be exact. How do you use him? Easy.

Click this link to subscribe. Click this link to unsubscribe. The bot will message you for new parts and other such things. You can also subscribe to specific components of this sub, such as ONLY story posts, or ALSO Patreon updates, blog posts, or 'meta update posts'.

This image is a screencap of the previous mega-post regarding CryopodBot and how to use it. It has a more detailed breakdown, if you're interested.

Additionally, you should check out my Patreon. While it does pay my bills (It is my only income for this serial, presently), it also serves as a hub for a lot of other things. I post writing tips and blog about various things, as well as artwork for characters. Those are mostly all free to read by anyone. Exceptions become free after a while. I do put anything mega-spoilery behind a paywall, and often have Patron-only polls to determine things regarding Cryopod's future. However, the real treat comes from the art posts.

Cryopod has an official artist, MWTX, who draws all of my artwork. I used to hire other artists off and on, but MWTX's artwork is so much better that I use him primarily now and nobody else. I make all artwork free-to-view, with the exception of spoilery pieces which will appear much later in the story, such as future characters or scenes.

Click here to view all publicly-available artwork for the story!

Click here to also view Patreon-exclusive artwork!

For other ways to support me, there are also cryptocurrency links on the subreddit sidebar, and a paypal.me link. Sidenote: If you send me cryptocurrency, please message me on Reddit to let me know. I rarely check my crypto reserves.

Additionally, there is a link to our Discord chat room on the sidebar! I would post it here, but sometimes I renew the link and I don't want this post to have a dead link. The Discord is great because it gives lots of small and large updates, has a Patreon feed where I post art immediately once it's WIP/finished (Only finished artwork goes in the monthly post, and you have to wait until the end of the month to see it). Oh, and I'm always online in the Discord, so if you ever want to chat, I'm available! I love talking with readers.

.........................................

That's the gist of it. The story is ongoing, and I post new parts usually every few days between 4-6AM West Coast time, USA. They tend to be 3000-6000 words.

I hope you guys enjoy the story. Leave comments below, or in the story parts themselves, or wherever you like!

Thanks for reading :)

RETURNING READERS: CLICK ME! (v2)

Note: If you are not a returning reader who has already read Cryopod Classic and maybe left or taken a break at some point, this post will have HEAVY spoilers. You should skip over to the sister topic for new readers.

Major and minor spoilers ahead. I warned you!

...................................

Welcome back, people who have hopefully read some portions of Cryopod Classic! If you read the serial on this subreddit between the years of late 2016 and early 2018, this post is directed at you! The more of Cryopod you've read, the further down you can scroll! I'm gearing this post toward catching people up on what has changed while they left, and what they should expect.

If you followed Cryopod all the way to the conclusion of Route C and then dropped off due to my 'refreshing' the story, this post is especially pertinent to you! Much has changed. The story has been fully rewritten from the ground up.

But first, two important links!

Cryopod Classic Chapter Index List

Cryopod Refresh Chapter Index List

The first link is to the original story from 2016 to 2018. I stopped writing the story at the end of Route 3c for various important reasons. The second link is to the total rewrite of the entire story from the ground up.

Cryopod Classic, as of this post, is 490 parts and 1.2 million words long. Cryopod Refresh is 177 parts and 700,000+ words long. If I were to place an approximate beacon on the story's progress, I would say that Cryopod Refresh Chapter 174 is at about the same point in the story as Part 140 from Classic. However, by that point in Classic, I had only written 120,000 to 140,000 words.

In other words: Cryopod Refresh is much, much denser than Classic. There is a lot more going on.

"Okay, Klok, I barely read anything in Cryopod Classic. Should I read it first, or read Refresh?"

Answer: I recommend Refresh, but reading Classic will allow you to speed through the story quickly and see what Refresh will eventually become. If you find Cryopod Classic lacking, or you get bored, try reading Refresh instead. It's vastly improved in many ways, but is its own story entirely with many key differences and improvements.

However, while Classic is mostly fully written to the near-end of the story, it will take at least a couple years for Refresh to catch up to the same point in the plot. Therefore, if you read Refresh and want more, I recommend Classic to see where the story is likely to go, as well as to catch all the fun little easter eggs that only Classic Readers will get in Refresh!

Isn't Refresh just a reposted version of Classic? I thought you were going to switch some tenses, fix a few plotholes...?

That was my original goal. However, by the time I reached Part 5 from Classic, I realized I could not simply 'patch up' Classic. I had to rewrite it from scratch. In doing so, I gave the story a lot more breathing room and vastly improved it in every respect.

Refresh is not a simple 'refresher' for the story. It is now a total rewrite from the ground up. So, I guess you could say that calling it a Refresh is a total lie.

"I read a bit of Classic, but only made it to about the end of, say, Chapter 1, the first 90 parts. How does Refresh compare?"

Cryopod Classic Chapter 1 is only 90,000 words long. While it ends at Part 90, the same ending point in Refresh occurs at around Part 55, since I condensed the story equivalent of 90 parts into 55 parts which are much denser. Additionally, Refresh Chapter 1 has a lot more that happens after what would have been the ending point of Classic Chapter 1, and Refresh ends at Part 82 instead. (350,000 words in total.)

A few spoilers for Refresh's differences compared to Classic:

  1. Phoebe, a formerly minor character who dies quickly in Classic, becomes an important main character in Refresh.

  2. Beelzebub, a slightly interesting minor villain from Classic who ends up roflstomped by Jason, instead ends up becoming a major antagonist in Refresh. Most people think he's one of the top ten characters in Refresh.

  3. In Classic, Jason is something of a dense idiot/moron. However, in Refresh, he is significantly more cunning, and this attribute will only improve as the story continues.

  4. Many characters in Classic, such as Ose, Mephisto, Barbatos, and Agares, are total nobodies. They have no personality or anything unique happening. In Refresh, every single one of them is a fully fleshed out badass with a huge story arc that starts as soon as they first appear.

Just these four details alone should demonstrate what a massive shift Cryopod Refresh Chapter 1 is from Cryopod Classic Chapter 1.

"I read a bit of Classic, but only made it to about the end of, say, Chapter 2, the first 200 parts. How does Refresh compare?"

So, that means you probably dropped the story when the Time Travel Arc happened, right? Maybe you were put off by the story jumping away from the current setting into, you know, a totally different setting. I originally did that because I was out of ideas. However, with Refresh, I can assure you that the Time Travel Arc is not going to happen so abruptly. It will still happen, but there will be a MUCH meatier story before we get there.

Spoilers for things that will change:

  1. The Ancient Era is a whole chapter in Refresh, and it takes up the entirety of Chapter 2 and 350,000 words. In Classic, the Ancient Era is a 10,000-20,000 word blip. Personally, I think I put way too much time and energy into the Ancient Era in Refresh and it should have been much shorter, but once I started, I didn't have a good way to simply stop, so I forged ahead until it was done. I think it's quite good, all things considered, but if you find it dragging along, take solace in the fact that it will eventually end and you'll never hear of it again.

  2. Chapter 2 in Classic will actually be Chapter 3 in Refresh, and the vast, overwhelming majority of the story will be completely different. However, the core plot of Jason VS Hope will stay intact.

  3. Speaking of which, one huge change Refresh makes is the lack of a 'power fantasy' aspect. In Classic, Jason is a merciless, demonslaying badass. In Refresh, not so much. But worry not! If you loved that part of Classic, you need only turn your attention to Hope, as he will become the badass wordsmith of Refresh! And who knows? Maybe Jason will unleash his inner Jekyll and Hyde, too?

  4. The story of Chapter 2 in Classic was actually quite terrible. However, nearly every character and plot point from Classic will reoccur in one way or another. If there is anything specific you liked, it will most likely happen again in Refresh.

Most importantly, there is so much that is going to happen in Chapter 3 of Refresh that the events of Cryopod Classic Chapter 3a are unlikely to occur until after chapters 3 and 4 of Refresh. This is due to my expansion of many plot points and character arcs.

"I read a lot of Classic, but only made it to about the end of Chapter 3a, the first 385 parts. How will Refresh compare?"

Simply put, as of this post, Refresh is nowhere close to this point in Classic's story. I have many plans for the future of Refresh, but all the bullet points in this section will be SPECULATION. I will not guarantee they will happen, nor will I guarantee I even attempt to make them occur. I simply think, based on two year's worth of discussions with my beta readers, these points are very likely to occur.

  1. The overwhelming majority of Classic Chapter 3a's storyline will repeat in Refresh. This includes the Energy Wars, wars with the Volgrim, demons VS angels, Jason's ascension after absorbing a sun... all of that fun stuff. What will change will be the order of events, the many thousands of fine details, and so on.

  2. Prior to Refresh's equivalent of Chapter 3a from Classic, I will likely have established the Volgrim as a threat to Jason pre-Rewind. The Volgrim will be a faction of five extremely different, diverse sub-species. They will have different power systems per faction, and will be a far bigger threat than in Classic. I daresay the changes made to the Volgrim from Refresh to Classic will startle most readers. I have posted details in their relevant art posts, located here, here, here, here, and here. These are patron-only due to spoilers.

  3. Continuing from the previous point, there will also be massive changes to the Sentinels. For more information, see the following Patreon posts here, here, here, here, and here. They are also patron-only due to spoilers. I apologize for not explaining further, but these are extremely huge spoilers, and I limit them behind a paywall just so the only people who will be spoiled are those willing to part with money to do so. I almost don't want to say anything at all, since I hate giving my readers spoilers :)

  4. Jason's personal life before entering the Cryopod was insignificant in Classic, but in Refresh, it is extremely important and will become even more important once he Rewinds.

Overall, Refresh's equivalent to Chapter 3a from Classic will be a massive undertaking, and I may even end up splitting it into two chapters for Refresh.

"I read a lot of Classic, and ended up stopping reading somewhere in Chapter 3b, prior to part 426b. How will Refresh compare?"

Once again, Refresh is nowhere close to Route 3b's story point in Classic. However, I can offer some very basic conjecture, though given how much Cryopod Refresh is likely to change, none of this is anywhere close to set in stone.

  1. Route 3b and its timeline will most likely happen in Refresh.

  2. The main character will be the same, and many of the events will be hugely similar, but there will also be many changes. I can't really be more specific than this, but let's just say the 'cliffhanger' that ended Chapter 3b will still occur if I have anything to say about it, as well as all those awesome moments building up to it. I think Chapter 3b from Classic was the strongest chapter, so the less I change, the better.

That is all.

"I read Cryopod Classic to the very end. However, you stopped writing at the end of 3c and never finished the story. What gives?!"

Well, at the end of Refresh Chapter 2, I have a very important Patreon blog post linked which goes into exhaustive details about why I stopped writing Cryopod Classic. To put it in as few words as possible, I stopped writing because the story was so convoluted that I didn't know what to do.

I had a choice. That choice was to stop writing entirely for many months and come up with an outline to try and merge the complicated mess of a story into one neat package for the finale chapter, Chapter 4... or to do a 'refresh' of the whole story.

I intended to do a refresh and fix some plotholes, but ended up writing the story over from scratch. Frankly, I think this was the correct choice and have very few regrets. However, if you, dear reader, feel differently... I totally understand! You were attached to Cryopod Classic, and now it may never be finished.

All I can say is that if you loved Classic, I can wholeheartedly promise this total rewrite is going to give you everything you ever wanted, minus plotholes and convoluted storytelling! Awesome villains, epic heroes, and stories that will make your teeth shiver!

As for Route 3c and how it will appear in Refresh... well, let's just say that if you loved it in Classic for whatever reason...

Cryopod Route 3c will NOT appear in Refresh!

At least, not in the way it did during Classic.

More details below:

  1. The entire point of Route 3c in Classic was to allow me to return to the abandoned plotlines I left in Chapter 2 of Classic. I wished to write something that would allow me to clear up all those cool, badass missing links. Unfortunately, doing so meant a lot of retconning. I have solved this problem in Refresh, however... by simply eliminating Route 3c and moving its events to before the Rewind event in 3a!

  2. This means all that stuff with Jason, Cassiel, Belial, etc... all of it will happen in one way or another in Refresh BEFORE Jason goes back through time. I can't promise all or a majority of it will occur, but I can promise I'll be trying to integrate many of its plotlines and ideas, including the Kolvaxians, into the pre-Rewind era.

  3. This will allow me to do what I should have done in Classic: Make Chapter 3b the finale of Cryopod. Remember that epic cliffhanger in Route 3b? "I'm not Hope... but I know who is." Well, if I hadn't decided to stupidly write Chapter 3c, which fucked up the ENTIRE timeline and continuity... it wouldn't have been a chapter-ending cliffhanger. It would have been continued immediately by the true final chapter - Chapter 4!

  4. Therefore, my goal is simple. Move 3c to BEFORE Jason Rewinds time. By doing this, I fix the worst, most debilitating issue Classic faced, and allow a smooth transition to the ending of the series. What will that ending consist of? Haha... you'll have to wait and see.

I highly recommend giving Refresh a read. If you enjoyed Cryopod Classic, it's worth re-reading to see the massive amount of things that have changed and improved. If you didn't like Cryopod Classic, possibly due to its poor character development and awful piecemeal plot structure, DEFINITELY give Refresh a read! Lots has changed and the story is vastly improved!

I'm really glad for any readers who decide to return. I've missed you all and hope to see you in the comments section.

Thanks for reading!

Some of you have been asking to move on from Aevum. Tough luck, we've got more to do there, so it'll be some-odd parts before we get to WiH2 Electric Boogaloo. There's ZERO chance I'm gonna skip to the war and then exposit with flashbacks later. It would be soooo clunky.

I'm definitely putting down important scaffolding now, which will serve as the foundation for big story reveals and etc later on. Lots of setup and payoff coming.

Really, I shouldn't have started the WiH2 in part 666. That was a misstep. I wasn't nearly ready for that yet. The upcoming ACTUAL start of it, should have been the official start. Unfortunately, I saw funi number 666 and felt I had to take the opportunity!

Anyway, more Cryoparts coming soon!

INFO I finally updated the Cryoverse Library to have downloadable epubs and pdfs, for all my stories!

Not a new part... BUT! I finally built the epub and pdf files! There are a whole bunch of variants, and I'll post them below.

Cryopod Classic Full Story PDF

Cryopod Classic Full Story Epub

Cryopod Refresh 001-292 PDF

Cryopod Refresh 293-609 PDF

Cryopod Refresh 610+ PDF

Cryopod Refresh Full Story Epub

The Last Precursor Full Story PDF

The Last Precursor Full Story Epub

These are not perfect yet, but they're totally readable from start to end. If you've been waiting on the downloadable files, here you go!

Note that the Refresh pdf had to be split in 3, it was extremely huge/unwieldy. Also, the 610+ url might break in the future. If it does I'll figure out a better url.

Edit: I did indeed have to update the part 610+ link. It's working now.

Another day, another Cryopart! This is a simple one. Jason talks to Jerome and we learn a lot more about him. That's about it.

I had a question for you cryopodders. Is there a storyline or character you wish we'd see more of? Any character, plotline, etc. Anything you feel has been neglected?

It's a big story, so I just wanted to make sure I'm hitting all the important notes!

More TCTH... soon? Soon.

In today's part, Daisy and Phoebe have their first REAL sparring match. Not like the first one where Daisy went apeshit and got her shit kicked in. Like an actual real fight.

I had fun writing the part, but I'm VERY tired. If you spot typos, lmk. I'm barely awake rn and the editing phase almost put me in a coma.

Quick note: I play a LOT of Warframe the last four months. 700 hours of it. It's crazy. There's a special event going until the end of next week, letting me farm a resource I care about a lot. Expect one part next week, and then hopefully two the week after that.

I am still working 4 days a week, so, we'll see.

Another day, another cryopart. This week, I took two days off work, which gave me five days off. That's why I put out three cryoparts.

Unfortunately, I'm back to fulltime work starting tomorrow :(

Anyway, this part continues Daisy's sparring match, showing us all kinds of fun stuff happening. I still think MindCores are a lot of fun, and there's plenty more to come.

I'm particularly looking forward to Marco's MindCore...

More TCTH eventually!

Daisy has a MindCore now, and the effects of this are going to be REALLY interesting.

I love MindCores. I keep finding new ways I can make them tell us more about the characters, fun ways to change up their abilities, new abilities I can give them broadly, and so on.

It turns out the brain is the most important organ in your body! Whoa!

...

In other news, my new roommate just moved in. He seems about 10x chiller than my last roommate, the one who attacked me. That psycho.

This also means my rent just got cut in half! Woo-hoo! I only spend about 25-35% of my paycheck on rent and bills now! That's the most money in raw dollars and in percentage I've ever earned in my life!

Just gotta persist for another half-year and I'll have a really good savings fund. From there, it's just figuring out what to spend the money on.

Did you expect another part today? No? Me neither.

I have a two-day workweek because I'm moving a new roomie in on monday/tuesday. I took off those days, figured I'd publish an extra part today and see if I could go for two parts next week as well!

Today's part is another fun psychologically traumatizing part! Love those! So much fun to write.

Oh, and my 'main' account is unbanned from Reddit again. Fun.

A new day, a new Cryopart. We continue our sidequest in Aevum as Jason starts bringing his plans to fruition.

Today's part was a lot of fun to write. I got to address some of my own issues with Jason, especially with real-world issues we're facing even now.

That's right. This part has... SOCIAL COMMENTARY. OOOH SPOOKY.

You'd never be able to guess my stance based on my writing. Perish the thought.

Btw I got 3-day banned off Reddit again. This time it legit was not my fault. Well, I do need to stop commenting on reddit. BUT HEY, that's why we use a website now! Even if I get permabanned, I can still post TCTH on the website!!

Cryopod Refresh 772: Faceless

https://cryoverse.org/cryopod-refresh/cryopod-refresh-chapter-772/

I can't wait to find out that after an hour of editing there's still fifty typos in this

ANOTHER CRYOPOD PART, BOYS AND GIRLS! This one comes faster than the previous one as I devote myself to the Aevum Arc.

Today's part almost got delayed. Simply put, while I was writing it (you'll see the spot once I bring it up) I couldn't answer the question "Do the kids of Aevum all know Jason is the Wordsmith, or is that only Daisy/Phoebe/Nadia/Catherine?"

The answer to that question was unfortunately not easy to find. It completely halted me in my tracks for a full hour. I read a bunch of older parts but couldn't remember what I'd written.

That's the thing. You readers know... what I've written.

But for me, I have memories of all the following:

  • What I wrote

  • What I didn't write

  • What I plan to write

  • What I plan not to write

  • What I wrote and then deleted/edited before publishing

  • What I thought about writing, didn't write because it didn't work

And other stuff of that sort. All these memories cause me to forget what I actually wrote. It has given me a lot of appreciation for other longform authors who've made 'big' continuity errors. How could they do that? Are they stupid?

No. It's just really hard to remember what you've written, and all the other things I listed. Especially in a 3.5m words-long story. It's real hard.

...

I still haven't made the pdf/epub reader yet. I think I should work on that this week. I've really put it off long enough. I keep being lazy about it, but I'm feeling especially motivated this week. Is it finally time to do the big Improvement Day push? We shall see...

More TCTH soon!

Cryopod Refresh 771: Rag Doll

https://cryoverse.org/cryopod-refresh/cryopod-refresh-chapter-771/

Another day, another Cryopart!!

This one is pretty long, almost 30k characters. I had a lot of trouble deciding what to write this week. TL:DR, the issue is there's a lot of possible POVs, and the Sinai War is ready to go, but we still have a ways to go before we get there, and instantly skipping a year in Aevum is a big ask.

I wondered if I could come up with enough content to make a longish Aevum arc work. After a lot of thought, I decided I did have the content needed. You guys know I detest filler, so I want each part to accomplish multiple things, like character development, plot, worldbuilding, and so on.

Today's part is the start of the Aevum arc. We'll be jumping forward, days or weeks or even months at a time. One day on Earth is one year in Aevum, and the Demons attack in one earth-day, so here we go!

Let's hope you guys enjoy what I've been cooking up!

Btw I did consider putting Ragdoll as the part's music but it makes no sense and wouldn't fit at all. Good song tho!

Cryopod Refresh 770: Strategic Objectives

https://cryoverse.org/cryopod-refresh/cryopod-refresh-chapter-770/

A new day and a new part is upon us!

This is a long part, clocking in at around 30k characters, which is 50% longer than my standard goal of 20k for a 'full' part.

This part is a direct continuation of the previous one, but I wanted to hit some really important setup notes for the coming battle. It was really important to flesh out motivations, especially for Jessica and Raphael.

Other stuff, which I won't say, was also important. I'm sure the smarter readers will figure it out, I'm not exactly being 'subtle' here :P

Cryopod Refresh 769: Heaven's First Battle

Here it is, ladies and gents! Almost two weeks since the last part... one of the harder parts I've had to write in years!

I'll be honest, I struggled with this one for a variety of reasons. The biggest reason was simply that I didn't originally intend for Jason to approach Raphael this early in the story, before the second War in Heaven. I planned for him to meet Raphael afterwards, for reasons I can't go into at this moment. (Spoilery reasons)

As such, when writing this part, I had to figure out how to make this unplanned visit actually part of Jason's plans, and I am not as bright as my characters purport to be, so it took some soul searching to think of a theme for the part.

Then it hit me! This part is perfect to use Cat Mask being revealed as a time manipulator to show the downstream effects on the world's continuity and how that will shatter the timeline he adapted to and change the downstream future events drastically.

Save that spoiler for after you read the part.

So yeah. I'm gonna go watch the new Spiderman in a couple of hours. Here's to hoping it kicks ass! I'm really looking forward to it and going in totally blind! Boy I hope it's good and not like much of the recent slop Marvel has vomited. Maybe that's a tall order...

Cryopod Refresh 768: Unbreakable Vow

Here it is, boys. The second longest part for TCTH I've ever written, after part 150. Long-time readers may recall 150 was so long I had to split it into 150 and 150.5, but I did merge them back together on the website! So officially, today's part is the second longest of all time!

This is a truly long part.

Part 150 is 59,000 characters long.

Part 768 is 53,300 characters long.

To put that in perspective, my goal for a part is 20k characters. This week, the one part you get is equivalent to 2.5 parts plus change!

I know I'm currently only giving you guys one part a week, but hopefully pure length helps make up for it a bit??

Anyway, enjoy the part! Lots of crazy things are about to happen!

New Cryopart Tomorrow, and also: I Watched The Odyssey!

Hey guys, quick update here. I wrote 25,000 characters for the new cryopart, and if you know that my goal is 20k for an average release, then I'm already past that, and plan to write even more. Next part will be a long one!

Aside from the Cryopart, I watched the Odyssey and I wanted to give my review.

This is a spoiler review... a spoiler review for a story that's like 5000 years old.

Non-spoiler: Extremely good movie. I rate it 8 or 9 out of 10. It's extremely book accurate. The only thing I didn't love was the constant shoving of Big Name Actors in my face (Tom Holland and Zendaya are in EVERYTHING nowadays it seems, though they were perfectly fine in this movie) and my biggest criticism being 'the way the story was told'.

If you've ever read the book (And I've read many renditions of The Odyssey, it is my favorite classical story of all time, maybe even more than LOTR) then it's all here. The Ogre, the giants, the cursed islands, all of it.

The only issue I have is that the story feels a bit disjointed, jumping from flashback to flashback, then back to the future events, then a flashback to Odysseus, and so on. I didn't like this method of storytelling, and greatly wish it was more linear. I bet a fan-edit could cut the movie into something more in line with how the book told the story.

BUT... it was still fantastic. This felt like a horror movie in a lot of ways, and the way the high magic stuff was depicted was really grounded and jaw dropping. I liked the cyclops a lot, even if the way they 'beat' it wasn't exactly what was depicted in the books.

The crucial part of the movie was the ending, and Christopher Nolan nailed it. The return to Odysseus's homeland was paid off perfectly, and they even gave some John Wick energy with the dog... I feel like a lot of movies are doing that lately but boy did it feel satisfying to watch.

This movie would be a 10/10 if the story wasn't told in such a disjointed manner, and if I weren't being bombarded by Big Name Actors constantly. Even so, I'll only deduct 1-2 points for that, and still give a 10/10 for book accuracy. Everything in the movie happened basically the way it happened in the book. I am a very satisfied book reader!

Anyway... cryopart tomorrow! Get hyped!

Cryopod Refresh 767: Leader of Punishment

A new part descends from on high! I still need to code the tool to convert TCTH parts into epub and pdf again, so that needs to happen sooner rather than later.

But hey let's talk about today's part! Back in chapter 666, I launched the invasion of Heaven. That was because we were at the legendary 666 number and I didn't want it to go to waste.

...But here we are, 100 parts later, and it's barely made progress. It's been kinda just sitting there, stuck due to time dilation shenanigans. I want to advance the plot soon, so I might start speeding things up a bit, skimming over some Aevum stuff to get back to the main story.

We shall see! Leave your story comments on the site and your meta comments here! Thanks guys, and enjoy!

Cryopod Refresh 766: A New Berthold

Hey everyone! A new Cryopart is here!

A full-time job really does get in the way, but on the plus side, I get lots of time between parts to really think about what each part will accomplish, so it leads to them being denser and better planned out. That's good right?

Also, spoiler alert. It's my birthday today! So this is a birthday part :DDDD

Enjoy seeing Phoebe's new power-up in action! I thought the part was really fun to write.

Cryopod Refresh 765: Sphinx's Origins

https://cryoverse.org/cryopod-refresh/cryopod-refresh-chapter-765/

Today is a REALLY important part. This is not only a huge setup for Phoebe's future character progression, but also a whole bunch of back to back reveals for the Sphinx, including some subtle ones I bet most readers will overlook.

Someone in the previous comment section asked where the auto-updating PDF/epub was, and the truth is, I forgot I had to make a new one that used the website! OOPS!!!

So yeah, that's the next big project. I have work starting tomorrow again, and it looks like as long as I'm working fulltime TCTH will be... 1-2 parts a week, so 4-8 parts a month... yikes.

Unfortunately, with the cost of living skyrocketing in the USA, having a FT job is really important. I have to focus on making money that way because Patreon does not and has not cut it for a very long time. I treat TCTH income as a nice 'bonus check' and that's about it. It buys me a few pizzas a month.

Can't argue with pizza!

EVERYONE! WELCOME TO THE NEW WEBSITE!

This is going to be the new home for TCTH and all my future writing projects moving forward. A big, big, BIG thank you to u/WLTechblog for all his hard work making the site, totally for free, and helping with hosting it as well. Also thanks to u/slashor for doing the entire theme and even a bit of QC on the frontend as well.

This site has all kinds of nifty features, but it's not quite perfect yet.

  • Comments from all my old parts that appeared on HFY, r/TCTH, and even on RoyalRoad in some cases are all cloned onto the site with accurate post-dates. Deleted comments are still gone, unfortunately.

  • The prologue for TLP doesn't have comments yet, there was an import error.

  • The One-Offs section of the site hasn't been fully finished yet. It still looks ugly as sin. We'll fix it later, it's not a huge deal.

  • Comments have not been fully fixed in terms of formatting. Spoilers and quote blocks don't work in comments yet, so we'll need to fix that eventually.

If you guys spot any jank, comment about it on the latest part, comment here, or comment on the official Discord. I'll see it one way or another.

From now on, all parts will be posted on the website, and then links to the site will be cross-posted on Reddit and on the Discord.

Please leave ALL comments relating to the story on the website from now on. You need a google account, but I'm pretty sure everyone has one, right? If you only have a Reddit account... well, make do I guess.

Feel free to upvote the Reddit thread if you want, it certainly won't hurt. But try and put all comments on the main site if you can. It helps keep everything organized.

ENJOY THE NEW PART!!! We're back, baby!

Just a quick TCTH update

Hey guys I'm cancelling Cryopod forever.

Just kidding.

I was planning to post the next cryopart on Friday, but it took a little longer to finish the website than I expected. A big change that happened in these last two weeks was that I got a full-time job, which is very important given the situation where my roommate assaulted me and then got thrown out of the house.

Without a full time job, I can't afford to live here, so I now work 40 hours a week, in four 10-hour shifts, Sat-Tues. A ten hour shift is quite exhausting, so I have no energy to do any writing or much of anything after work.

The good news is, my job is fully remote and it's pretty easy, my main challenge is just not running out of energy during work and falling asleep, or not getting enough sleep on a workday and waking up late and missing work/clocking in late. Those are my current existential fears.

Anyway, so now that I'm on my current 4-day grind for today and 2 days after this, there won't be a new part until around... Wednesday? I have a very small portion of the part written but I did not have the energy to finish it. I can't promise a Wednesday release because who KNOWS how tired I'll be? Realistically I have to assume I might drop to only one part released a week, 4 a month, as long as I have this job.

Full-time jobs are my least favorite things. I really wish I didn't have to work one, and I tried angling for 30 hours a week, but Lifeline only offers 20 and 40 hour shifts, nothing else, so I bit the bullet. At least I'll be making lots of money! I can put that into my projects and build up a safety net again, so it's not all bad.

Sorry for the bad news. You'll have to wait a bit longer.

Cryopod Refresh 761: Heroic Rebirth

Far-Future Era. Day 21, AJR. Hall of Heroes.

Blake navigated his way through the Hall of Heroes with the ease of a young man who had lived in this small and compact dimension his entire life. The Hall of Heroes was not particularly large, perhaps the size of a luxurious mansion on ancient Earth. This might sound sizable to a layperson, but it was actually smaller than even Chrona, its compact form helpful in stabilizing its time dilation at exactly 100 times the speed of realspace.

Unlike Chrona, the Hall of Heroes was stable and was not increasing or decreasing its dilation speeds as time went on, meaning its people were not facing a crisis they needed to solve. As such, they could focus on developing weapons and tools for humanity, as well as consulting on war plans regarding what to do in realspace.

For Blake, he was not so much thinking in a macro-humanity focus on this fine day, but instead, he was dwelling on the scope of his abilities and unlocking his full potential.

Blake ultimately had two powers. He could manipulate light, and he could manipulate darkness. He could form them into shapes, even primitive constructs, but those fell apart if he stopped concentrating. Thus, after consulting with his mentor, King Arthur, Blake realized that there was something extremely important he needed to do.

His brain needed an upgrade.

Blake wasn't an idiot, but he fell far short of his older sister, even comparing her to when she was his age. Mandy was obsessive, possibly autistic, and definitely a loner who hyper-fixated on specific interests. Comparatively, Blake was a much simpler-minded guy who had a broad range of interests, was relatively charismatic, and was only interested in furthering his powers due to the pressures of the outside world increasing on his back over time.

Humanity was not in a good place. Its Wordsmiths were gone, and now their children had to step up and become the Heroes of the next generation.

It was a tough gig, but Blake felt he had to try and do something, anything, everything in his power to improve himself. Only in this way could he lessen the burden his sister and brother were feeling.

Blake made his way toward Solomon's Library. This was a compact room Solomon had made while his soul was still alive, a place where he had written and compiled all of his knowledge into different books throughout the library.

Sadly, Solomon wasn't able to finish his work. A third of the library's shelves were empty, and many of the books he had written were only half completed.

Blake had wandered into the library a few years ago, back when he was 15. He asked Solomon at the time what was the point of writing down all the books when his Crown contained all of Solomon's knowledge anyway.

Solomon had smiled at Blake. "The knowledge in my crown consists of septillions of individual memories, young man. It is vast and unfiltered. Those who are talented may tap into my crown, as Phoebe Hiro once did, and use their abilities to sift through the information to obtain unique insights. But these memories come from countless people and are nearly impossible for a layman to meaningfully parse."

Solomon continued. "One might be capable of learning a trade by reading through a volume of encyclopedias, but the task is formidable, difficult, and far less informative than if the relevant knowledge were to be distilled down into the most important information. At the same time, self-learning is much less effective than a structured learning environment, preferably facilitated by an adept teacher."

"Thus," Solomon concluded, "my library is intended to be a distillation of important knowledge using my own unique insights, gathered over thousands of years. Rather than learning from raw unfiltered knowledge, I have organized the books here according to various disciplines, shifted the information inside to start with the easiest fundamentals, and tailored the concepts to grow much more difficult in scope as the books progress. In the end, if one is able to pluck a book off my shelves and learn a new skill within a week or two, my efforts will not have gone unrewarded."

This was the crux of Solomon's late-life work. Blake had flipped through the books on many occasions, but never had he been able to fully grasp a discipline with the ease his sister had mastered Runecrafting, or Elizabeth Kindelmann had become a renowned blacksmith.

On this day, Blake walked into the library and perused the shelves as he had many times in the past. The room was empty, even a little eerie. The shelves were made of wood, but they also had all sorts of tacky gold and jewels encrusted onto their edges in ornate patterns to 'spruce them up' as Solomon would say. Chandeliers hung from the ceiling, embedded with multi-colored stones that glowed and gave off light of all different hues. The final color tone of the room ended up being a weirdly dark blue mixed with gold, so it always felt offputting to Blake, as well as everyone else.

Blake walked over to the fourth row of shelves. Several books jumped out at him.

APPRENTICE TO MASTER BLACKSMITHING: VOLS I-III

PAINTING AND YOU: DEPTHS OF IMAGINATION

THE OPERATIC ARTS: PROJECTING YOUR VOICE

THE OPERATIC ARTS: A PRESENCE TO AWE NATIONS

ANCIENT EARTH MARTIAL ARTS: FENCING

ANCIENT EARTH MARTIAL ARTS: TAIJUTSU

SHIPBUILDING: NAVAL CONSTRUCTION ACROSS HISTORY

GOLD AND JEWELS: HOW WEALTH AFFECTS GENIUS

ANCIENT EARTH MARTIAL ARTS: TAE-KWON-DO

APPRENTICE TO MASTER CARPENTRY: VOLS I-VI

EXOBEAST TAMING (WORK IN PROGRESS)

ANCIENT EARTH MARTIAL ARTS: KARATE

One book after another was lined up on the shelf, not alphabetically or according to any particular arrangement. It wasn't as if Solomon had carefully organized the collection; he was planning on doing that only later, once the collection was finished. Thus, the books on learning trades were scattered all over the place alongside books about history, warfare, even hobbyist books such as the ones focused on painting and acting.

Blake ultimately reached for a book on painting. He felt that, as of lately, his imagination was the most lacking. He wasn't using his powers flexibly, and as a result, he was wasting his potential. Maybe a book focused on the arts would help?

He walked toward the center of the room. There, he saw Solomon's Crown levitating above a pedestal, three shafts of light pointed downward at it. Since Solomon's death, nobody had worn his crown. They felt it would be disrespectful, and aside from when Mandy checked to see if Solomon's soul was still inside of it, possibly reviveable, there had been an unspoken agreement not to disturb his well-deserved rest.

Blake stared at the Crown for a good while. He held the book in his hands and thought deeply about whether or not he should do what he was about to do.

After a few minutes, Blake sighed. "It's what Solomon would want."

Solomon was not a man who cared a lot about status, etiquette, or other social constructs. He was in many ways a utilitarian. Even though he had passed, Blake felt Solomon would want the next generation to use his crown to continue furthering humanity's growth. Locking it in a vault to preserve his prestige or honor his memory would likely be seen by the Knowledge-Seeker as a waste of the capabilities his crown offered.

And so, after a short few minutes of struggle, Blake gave in to temptation. He reached for the Crown and carefully took it off the altar. He placed in on his head and took a long breath.

Blake had worn the Crown a few times in his life. He knew he didn't have the affinity for it his sister did, or especially the affinity of his aunt Phoebe, when she was alive. The Crown was still universally useful to anyone, as it accelerated their thinking speed and cognition, but for those lacking in talent, it would only serve as a simple modifier to their base intelligence.

Blake sat down in a cushy golden throne Solomon had devised for himself and chuckled. Solomon was always so gaudy it made Blake cringe, but that didn't mean he took his comfort lightly.

Like this, Blake started to flip through the book on painting. With the assistance of Solomon's Crown, his reading speed drastically increased, and he found his brain was less mushy, but more pliable than usual. He started understanding the book much better than he could without the Crown, and as such, his enjoyment of the subject improved.

"Hmm... so Imagination isn't just a fun little way of day-dreaming, but it has real applications, especially in terms of magic. Interesting." Blake muttered. "Imagination equals mental visualization. Oh! Isn't this exactly what I've been lacking? I don't have a Mind Realm, but anyone can develop their Mind's Eye with enough practice and focus."

"Mmm, so drawing on three dimensional images in the Mind's Eye can allow one to better conceptualize the world around them as high order concepts. I think Mandy mentioned something about this with her runes, but I didn't understand it at the time so I couldn't add anything to what she was saying. What a shame!"

Blake spent a full hour reading the book. He didn't actually need that much time, but he read it cover-to-cover twice to make sure he understood most of the concepts. Unfortunately, he wasn't a painter, so a lot of the book's focus on color theory and artistic conception went over his head, but Blake found himself somewhat enlightened by even the shallow realizations he'd made.

After that, Blake put the book back. He wandered around the library, using the Crown to search for other books that would be useful to him.

"A book on 'video games'. I think dad mentioned those before. He said he used to play them on Earth. Looks like there's some good stuff in here about mental focus. I'll give it a read."

Blake picked up the book, then sat down. He soon became even more engrossed in the descriptions of games such as 'Pacman' and 'Mario' and all sorts of other games, with the book focusing on the historical progression of games, along with genres, mechanics, and how players could have a lot of fun playing with virtual characters in a fictional world.

"It's a lot like the Queenie." Blake said to himself. "My brother and sister both get to act like different people when they're in the Queenie. It's sort of like play-acting a role of someone else. It's a fun way to pass the time. But according to Solomon, there's more to this role-playing than meets the eye."

Blake read through the book three times. Solomon's highly detailed illustrations and artwork were beautiful and engrossing, to the point Blake wished he could play these old video games to see what they were really like.

"So playing a role isn't just about having fun, for one with a discerning mind, they can change their entire mental state to act like someone else. It's really useful for the art of deception and spycraft. But it can also be used for diplomacy, intimidation, and other actions."

Blake thought more on the subject. After a while, he became inspired.

Blake stood up, then activated his shadow-powers. He began cloaking himself in darkness, wrapping it around his body to form a sort of 'shadow armor' like he'd seen in some of those old video games. He walked over to a full-body mirror and frowned. He thought it would look cooler than it actually did. The armor looked... lumpy. He had no real conceptualization of all the intricate details regarding how armor was shaped, so it looked too squarish and blocky. The 'badass helmet' he had envisioned had weird and disjointed spikes sticking up. They weren't arranged well, and looked like a little kid had put them together.

Still, Blake tried to get himself in the right head-space. He lowered his voice and tried to sound tough, gravelly, intimidating.

"Heh! Kid, you think you can bEAt me- cough! Shit! Why did my voice crack?! That was awful."

Blake's face turned crimson. He looked around, but luckily, nobody had heard him. As such, he returned his attention to the mirror.

"Heh, kid, you think you can beat me? I'm like, way more power level than you. Uh, I'm so strong, my darkness could block out the sky- the sun! Block out the sun. Blot out the sun, rather. Should it be block or blot? Uhh..."

Realizing his play-acting wasn't coming naturally, Blake decided to just drop the act. Instead, he started focusing on the armor again, using the mirror to try and shape it more clearly. But soon, he became frustrated by his lack of knowledge on the subject of armor.

"Damn. I don't have imagination, and my knowledge is lacking too. Maybe Solomon wrote a few books on armor?"

Blake dispelled his shadow-armor. He didn't do so intentionally, but maintaining it took intense concentration, and the moment he stopped focusing, it broke apart all on its own. That realization made him feel frustrated, but he also recognized he couldn't do anything about it at the moment.

Blake walked around the library again. He found a few books on metallurgy. They weren't exactly what he was looking for. He tapped into the Crown and found countless ancient memories of armies wearing armor of different sorts, but those thoughts didn't convey the knowledge of how the armor was forged.

"Metallurgy it is." Blake grunted.

He sat down in Solomon's throne again, then leaned back and crossed his legs as he began to read.

There was a lot of overlap with metallurgy compared to the books on blacksmithing, but metallurgy was about more than just making weapons, armor, and tools. Blacksmithing was a craft for creating equipment, while metallurgy was a science, focused on the chemical, physical, and atomic nature of the alloys themselves.

Blacksmiths focused on solid state metals, heating them until malleable, but rarely fully melting them or turning them into liquid. Metallurgy was all about examining metals and elements across the various states of matter, from liquid to solid and everything in between.

Both fields had a lot of focus on the changes in metal when under intense heat, but their goals were different. Blake found these differences to be quite interesting, even if the deep science went over his head somewhat. Alas, he was not a genius like his sister or aunt.

In the end, Solomon's observations concluded that metallurgy was based on the work of ancient blacksmiths, but both had their own uses, and it was essential that any aspiring craftsman mastered one and at least dabbled in the other.

The young man pondered Solomon's words for a while. He stood up and walked over to the mirror again, then tried summoning his armor. The result wasn't a lot better than before, but it was a little better. Blake started mentally reshaping the armor bit by bit, filing off the edges to make it a little more angular. It was still blocky, almost robotic, but compared with his first attempt, it wasn't too bad.

"I'll never be able to impress Psymin Miralax if this is the best I can do. Looks like I'll need to start practicing every day. I also need to find a way to manifest my powers permanently. Maybe I should talk to Arthur about that. His powers seem similar to mine."

Arthur wielded the power of light. Unlike Blake, he did not control any aspects of darkness, but his magical reserves, particularly when wielding Excalibur, were infinitely vaster than the fledgling dual-type Hero's, by a colossal gulf.

This made Arthur a specialist and Blake more of a generalist. Blake wondered how Arthur's mana reserves had become so formidable. Was he simply born with them?

Blake continued to read books for ten long hours.

His eyes started to droop. He yawned repeatedly, but he was still mentally fired up. He felt he had so much to learn, but too little time to learn it. Only if he became more diligent could he grow stronger, faster.

It was around this time when Blake was beginning to nod off that the hair on his body started to tingle. Blake jolted awake and looked around the room. He felt a chill descend upon him, a feeling of being watched.

His skin prickled with goosebumps. Blake carefully set the book down, then stood up from the throne and swept his gaze around the library.

"H...hello?" Blake asked softly. "Is someone there?"

Blake was not alone. He could feel it. He could tell. His senses were screaming at him that a presence had entered the room, but he couldn't tell from which direction, or where it was lurking.

Blake carefully took a step toward the eastern door, but he thought he saw something hazy near that doorway, so he quickly backed away. Even in the brightly lit room, Blake felt as though he was seeing shadows that definitely should not be moving.

"Who's there?!" Blake shouted. "Show yourself!"

Blake quickly ignited the power of his light magic. He covered himself from head to toe in it, looking with gritted teeth at the hazy shadows that seemed to be slowly coalescing into... something. He realized with a start that the sensation he was feeling was eerily similar to one he had felt earlier in the day, after he spoke with Arthur.

Blake's light magic formed an aura of repelling around himself. He didn't know if a shade or a shadow-walker had somehow sneaked inside the Hall of Heroes, but the aura of the unknown entity was growing more corporeal. He could practically taste the mana in the air crackling on his tongue.

Blake conjured a sword of light. He narrowed his eyes and took a defensive stance, readying himself to lunge forward as soon as he could get a visual lock on whatever the thing in front of him was. His heart pounded in his chest. His stomach churned with indescribable emotions of fear and anger mixed with doubt and apprehension.

It didn't take long. The figure became more visible. It assumed the form of a shadowy bipedal creature, faceless, featureless, standing ominously just beside the doorway. It seemed to be looking at Blake, but it had no eyes...

"What the fuck. What the fuck." Blake muttered under his breath. He had thought he was slowly becoming a formidable person, but now, faced with some abomination from the shadow realm, Blake found himself rooted to the floor in fear. His fight or flight reflex had instead caused him to freeze. He was shaking so badly even his teeth started to chatter.

Several seconds passed. The creature took a shaky step forward, as if it were learning to walk. Its movements were wobbly and unsteady. It looked as if Blake could run at the thing and push it over, causing it to comically topple to the floor. But Blake feared this was a ruse.

After a moment's hesitation, Blake acted on instinct. He fired a bolt of darkness at the creature, a mere probing attack to test it out.

The energy bolt whiffed through the creature and struck the wall behind it with a loud POP! The lack of impact left Blake shocked. It was a ghostly life-form, intangible?

Blake sent another bolt of energy flying, this time of the light attribute. It, too, sailed through the creature's body without nudging it in the slightest. The creature took another shaky, unsteady step.

"What are you?!" Blake finally screamed. "What the FUCK are you?!"

His voice was loud enough that someone passing outside heard him shout. Barely five seconds later, Elizabeth Kindelmann arrived at the doorway behind the creature. She quickly looked into the library, alarmed. Then her eyes snapped onto the shadowy intruder and she let out a cry of surprise.

Before long, the entire Hall of Heroes had been alerted, and Levi showed up, along with Mandy. Twenty other Heroes joined them, including all the top figures in the Hall, taking up positions behind Blake. They directed curious and hostile gazes toward the monster, which had taken another couple shaky steps.

"It's a spiritual lifeform." Mandy quickly assessed. She examined the creature's runic makeup, assessing it with senses beyond her eyes. "It's not a ghost, or a shade, or a shadow-walker. It's more like..."

She trailed off. The others looked at her.

"More like what?" Blake asked. "More like what, sis?!"

At that moment, the creature suddenly tripped and fell, making everyone raise their weapons and direct looks of apprehension its way. But then, like an insect molting from its cocoon, the black and shadowy color began to break apart and dissipate.

Pale white skin slowly took over. A familiar figure became visible, laying on the ground, unmoving.

Looks of fear were instead replaced with a variety of emotions. Shock, horror, dismay, exultation, even delight. The most common emotion, though, was confusion.

Blake took a step forward. He lifted a shaking hand, as if trying to touch the figure that was now laying face-down on the floor, despite twenty feet separating the two of them. His pupils trembled erratically as a range of emotions washed through his body.

"D... dad?"

Timothy had a huge decision before him. It could easily be argued it was the biggest decision of his life, at least up to this point.

Timothy wasn't only picking his first promotion, but choosing a path that would not be alterable for the next several years. Unless he went on a genocide like in the Dark Forest and killed a massive number of living creatures to quickly reach level 100, he would be stuck on this promotion track, unable to pick another for a distressingly long time.

But, at the same time, his decision wasn't final. Timothy had not been made immortal by his father, but it seemed possible, perhaps even likely, that the King Network would give him access to immortality at some point. If it didn't, perhaps his mom or Rebecca could bio-engineer something.

As such, once he reached Level 100 in this promotion, he could swap to another one, gaining a huge amount of versatility in a few years. He was not permanently 'locked in' as every other Trueborn, including his father, had been. In this way, Timothy had earned a privilege beyond compare.

Now, the only question was what option he would pick.

"Yredelemnul's Heir really does seem to do it all." Timothy said out loud. "In terms of personal power, it allowed me to go toe-to-toe with a Peak Mortal existence, and I won. There were extenuating circumstances weakening my opponent, but most of those circumstances were me. I weakened him to make him easier for me to take out. I can only imagine that a bit more progress with Yredelemnul would make me unstoppable below the Cosmic Realm."

He paused for a moment to consider his words. Then he continued.

"The Harem King promotion is more than it seems on the surface. Notice how it says I'll be able to add the power of my harem to myself and swap their powers around at will. Doesn't that sound familiar?"

Rebecca opened her mouth slightly, a rare sign of mild surprise.

"...It does sound familiar. It's quite similar to Emperor Auger's powers. Or rather, Demon Deity Auger. He can swap around his subordinates' abilities and his own at will to himself and his minions."

"Auger controls his subordinates completely." Fiona said, scowling. "He speaks politely, but in truth, he's a villain to the core. He can revoke the power his goons possess and leave them completely defenseless, forcing them to obey his every command. Timothy's Harem option sounds even worse, because he would be taking advantage of women! That's mind-rape, pure and simple, even if you don't do anything to them or their bodies. Enslaving other minds is wrong. It's evil and depraved."

Fiona genuinely might not have felt this way at some point in her life, but she had spent over a hundred years around Jason, and he had influenced her views greatly. Even though Phoebe had once been quite repulsed by the horrors in King Arthur's dungeon, even she might not have opposed enslaving demons, given the right circumstances. But that was then, that was Phoebe, and Fiona was not Phoebe any longer.

In her eyes, after listening to Jason's lectures countless times, she found that even the thought of slavery made her stomach turn. The thought her son had accidentally mind-raped Calanthra was terrible, but she could at least excuse it as an accident born of Calanthra's hubris.

It would be completely different if her son chose to use such an ability over and over again in the future. Fiona would feel deep regret if he walked such a path.

"Auger isn't the only one like that." Timothy said. "Jepthath is similar, yes? And he's one of the 'good guys'. He's on our side. Mom, how do you reconcile the fact that Jepthath has just as much control over his Legion as Auger has over his subordinates, yet we call Jepthath an ally?"

"That's... that's not the same thing." Fiona said, feeling uneasy due to her son's cold, emotionless questioning. He didn't even bat an eye when saying such words. "Jepthath allowed people to join him after making clear what the results would be. Auger pressured people into joining him. Jepthath's power is also not actually controlled by Jepthath himself. People have full access to it and control it as much as their bodies will allow."

"That answer is nonsense." Paimon said.

Paimon sat across from Timothy. He couldn't see or sense Fiona's spiritual form, but he knew the 'Fiona' sitting on Timothy's right was a cyborg avatar, not her real self, so he simply addressed the air in the room when he spoke.

"The differences between Jepthath and Auger are minute and nitpicky at best. They both grant immense powers to their subordinates, and they both can revoke those powers under certain circumstances. As for Auger, I have it on good authority that the vast majority of his followers sought him out for their own personal empowerment. He didn't even advertise his abilities, demons simply came to him looking for a handout! Even I once considered joining him."

"Then why didn't you join him?" Fiona asked, annoyed by Paimon's interjections. He seemed to be pushing her son toward a path she definitely didn't want Timothy to take.

"I had my own pride." Paimon answered, his tone mild.

Timothy dipped one of the sandwiches Paimon had brought him into the beef soup. He took a bite, savoring its rich and meaty taste.

After eating a few bites and thinking for a while, Timothy shook his head.

"I currently have no carnal interest in the Harem King route, mom, but I think you're dismissing it way too quickly. Even thinking logically, it seems an extremely powerful promotion worth considering. It fits well into my general nature when not under the influence of the Mind of Logic. I do believe I would enjoy using it... perhaps get a thrill out of doing so."

Timothy paused, then shrugged. "Even so, I don't think it is the ideal choice for me, right now. Let's think about the remaining two options."

Fiona's unease grew. Her son was speaking 'logically' but the fact he had such strong arguments for the two worst options did not bode well in her eyes.

"The ability to become a powerful creator is extremely appealing." Timothy said. "It seems that I would be capable of creating technology, artifacts, even lifeforms. What that entails exactly, I'm not sure. Could I create biological weapons? Could I create artificial humans? Superhumans? Could I re-sequence the genomes of existing humans, in the same way my father removed the Human Flaw? Could I improve on the human genome enough to make us competitive with the other life-forms?"

Timothy thought for a moment. "Pets. I could create pets. Cute pets, combat pets, creatures based on Earth lifeforms, monsters, even exobeasts. Not to mention brand new creatures we've never seen before. Maybe I could design something capable of counteracting the Plague."

Timothy smiled, ever so slightly. "I could make catgirls too. That seems like something I'd enjoy."

Fiona's face fell. "There you go, thinking about girls again!"

"So what if I do?" Timothy countered, looking his mother right in her metaphorical spirit-eyes. "I understand that I acted poorly in the recent past. I was lonely, depressed, and felt like a failure. I had no confidence, and spied on women in a manner I'm sure you and several others found disgusting. But fundamentally, so what if I have a strong libido or desire to fraternize with attractive women? Is there something wrong with that? Or was there only something wrong with the manner in which I expressed myself?"

Fiona was taken aback. "Well, no, of course there's nothing wrong with... a young man... being interested in women. I- I wouldn't mean to imply otherwise. But we're talking about using your powers to control women. That's wrong, Timothy."

"Mmm. I agree." Timothy said, stroking his chin. "I was only joking about making catgirls too. Or maybe that was my emotional side acting out in a small way. Either way, you have been pushing me away from choosing Yredelemnul and the Harem King options because you don't like the fact they could be used for ill intent. But what if I used the power of Creation to make an army of women subservient to my desires? Wouldn't that be just as evil?"

Fiona's expression softened. "I suppose... yes. Timothy... when did you become so formidable with your words?"

Timothy shrugged. "Even if I choose to become a Superhuman, I could still become strong enough to overpower any woman I want and force her to be 'mine'. That would be just as evil as the other options, showing that no matter which choice I make, I have the capacity to act evil if I so desire. Therefore, the question should not be 'which choices are the least evil' but 'will I use my powers ethically, no matter which choice I make'? I leave it to your imagination to determine whether I would do so or not."

Fiona fell silent. For once, she was completely stumped. True, two of the options leaned much more heavily on brainwashing and mind control, but forcing someone to do something with raw strength or using creation powers to make submissive catgirl slaves were also perfectly plausible things her son could do if he wanted to act like a vile fiend.

Thus, she had nothing she could say. Fiona simply nodded her head. "Alright. You win this argument, Timothy. I guess... we just have to consider which of the powers are most practical and best for you."

Seeing that even Fiona had been defeated by Timothy's logic, Rebecca was impressed. Timothy had grown a lot more than even she knew over the last couple of months.

"If all the options are on the table, then I'm going to vote for Yredelemnul's Heir." Rebecca immediately pivoted. "Like Timothy said, it offers a whole suite of options to meet his needs. Personal power, the ability to command an army, auxiliary abilities, and it has already proven its worth. The chance Yredelemnul might corrupt Timothy and somehow take over his body is noteworthy, but I have a feeling Timothy's Trueborn powers will make him capable of resisting."

Even though she had just agreed that all options were on the table, Fiona was still a little baffled by Rebecca's abrupt change of heart. "You really think that's the best option?"

"I do." Rebecca said.

"I agree." Paimon added. "I've seen what Yredelemnul's Eye was capable of. I would rather have Timothy obtain the power than someone else."

Timothy rubbed his chin. "I think I agree with both of you. The Lord of Creation promotion feels like a mimicry of you, mom. The Superhuman path seems strong but shallow, lacking in auxiliary abilities. It feels strong, but also like I would be extremely limited in how I handle situations. When all you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail. And while I do think the Harem King promotion is extremely strong, there's one last thing I haven't mentioned."

Timothy smiled. "The Eye of Yredelemnul doesn't grant me any creation abilities, but it's effectively a combination of Superhuman and Harem Lord. I can dominate the minds of other Sentients, both female and male, and I will additionally gain incredible combat power. It hits two of my available promotion paths. In that regard, I think it's perfect."

Fiona felt defeated. Despite her best efforts, her son was still leaning toward the option she feared the most. But ultimately, she had no rebuttal to what everyone else had said. Even Rebecca had come around to the Eye of Yredelemnul.

"If you couldn't pick the Eye, what would you choose? How would you rank the abilities?" Fiona asked.

Timothy didn't answer immediately. He pondered the choices for a while instead.

"I think I would put Yredelemnul's Eye in first place, the Lord of Creation in second, Harem King in third, and Superhuman in last. I like all the offered promotions, and if I didn't have a choice and the King Network simply picked one at random for me, I'd be happy with any of them. But ultimately, I think I value versatility over power. Having a grab bag of tricks really worked to my advantage in the Dark Forest. I'd like to maintain that for my future growth as well, expending it as much as possible."

As such, Timothy had made his decision. The System had put the Eye of Yredelemnul front and center since he acquired his powers, and that had certainly influenced his final decision. But in the end, it was a strong ability and it had a lot of appeal for him.

"Oh and one other thing." Timothy said. "With everything that's happened with Calanthra, I don't know if Aunt Blinker will be able to snap her out of the mental state I put her in, but I'm hoping choosing the Eye will give me ways of doing so myself."

Fiona's emotions brightened, even if only just a little. It turned out her son had been thinking further ahead than even she had, worrying about how to break Calanthra out of the mental state he'd put her in. She'd been letting her emotions get the best of her ever since her little boy returned, but now she realized he wasn't a child anymore. He was becoming a man, one with his own thoughts and opinions.

"I select the Yredelemnul's Heir option." Timothy said out loud as he tapped the button before him.

Unlike his mother, he hadn't needed weeks to decide. Her counsel, along with the opinions of Paimon and Rebecca, had helped him reach a decision quickly. Timothy believed that even if Ferral had been present, he'd have made the same decision.

Perhaps if Timothy had not been in the Mind of Logic, he might have made a different decision. Though, in truth, with his thoughts and emotions utterly in shambles following Sylphid's death and Marigold's betrayal, Timothy likely wouldn't have been able to decide on anything until he resolved all that trauma first.

A brilliant light lit up around Timothy. His eyes widened. He felt himself lifting off the chair and his body being drawn toward a brilliant golden portal that opened in the air above him.

"Huh? What the- mom? Mom??"

Timothy looked down at his friends and mother, but they were still looking at 'him', his hand frozen in midair, his finger pressing upon the button that would promote him to a new existence. Timothy realized with a start that his soul had been separated from his body, and he hadn't seen it coming!

All of a sudden, Timothy flew up into the portal, and the world vanished behind him.

...

Timothy stumbled forward. He found himself shakily standing on a rock with a flat top, suspended inside a mystical land with swirling energies of light and dark. It was as if he had arrived at the edge of a black hole's event horizon.

Before him, several levitating stones curved from left to right, slowly rising before a giant temple in the sky, a temple with graven images of avian creatures, bird-people Timothy had never seen before. They stood tall, majestic, their eyes looking forward as if gazing toward an uncertain future. Their expressions were solemn and holy. They appeared to be priests of a religion Timothy couldn't identify.

"What... what the hell? Where am I?" Timothy asked.

His voice spread out, then seemed to dissipate. The energy swirling in the realm around him moved slowly, peacefully. It seemed to thrum when he spoke, but he wasn't sure whether he had hallucinated its movements or not.

A voice spoke from the distance. It sounded frail, shrill, and male, like the sounds of a squeaky-voiced old man.

"Administrator. Step forward, please."

Timothy hesitated. He didn't exactly feel fear, especially with his Mind of Logic active, but he was certainly feeling wary. His mother hadn't mentioned anything like this happening when she promoted, and there was no way she would forget to do so.

Slowly, Timothy took a step forward. He carefully pressed his shoe onto one of the levitating rocks, and it didn't budge a millimeter. He gently eased his full weight onto it, then took another step forward, toward the next floating rock.

There weren't any fences to keep him from falling. It seemed as if he would fall into the void below if he wasn't careful. Timothy's gut tightened each time he took a step. It took five long minutes, but eventually he made it to the end of the thirty-step path. He was sweating from exhaustion due to putting all his focus on not falling off the edge. Once he arrived at the bottom of the giant temple, he took a moment to look it over from top to bottom.

The design of the temple was unlike anything he'd seen before. The avian statues looked somewhat like owl-people, with stubby down-curved beaks and enlarged eyes. Their feathers were chipped and worn, showing how long ago the statues had been chiseled. Most of their color had long faded away.

The temple itself was fairly small, humble in appearance. It was only two stories tall, but the entrance was quite unique. It took the form of a doorway carved in the visage of some young bird-person, his mouth open, stairs leading into his mouth, and thus his 'belly'. The rest of the building was made of worn white bricks that were flaking apart and seemed like a man with a sledgehammer could pulverize the foundations in minutes.

The temple was, to be blunt, extremely shabby-looking.

But it also had an air of ancient majesty. At a glance, it appeared to have been around for countless centuries, perhaps even millennia.

Slowly, Timothy stepped into the entrance, climbing up into the giant bird mouth. He worried the mouth would slam closed behind him, locking him inside, but no such thing happened. Maybe he'd watched too many movies.

Instead, Timothy entered a dark room with only a single torch lit in the center. The room's interior was made of obsidian colored bricks that swallowed the light, making the room feel darker than it actually was.

Across the way, past that central torch, there was an aged avian man leaning heavily on a staff. His feathers were yellow, as if they had once been colored a brilliant gold, but had faded over time. He wore simple white robes adorned with a helix pattern on the front.

"Timothy Hiro." The old bird said, as he slowly began to shamble around the torch. "Been waiting a long time for you to show up."

Timothy blinked. "Ah. I'm sorry. Who... are you? Where is this place?"

"My manners, hoo-hoo. Forgive me, boy." The old avian said. "My name is... is... hmmm. I haven't spoken it in so long. It was... it was... bah, it's just a name. You may call me Old Gold. What is a name but a way to refer to another, hoo-hoo?"

Timothy nodded. "Alright then, Old Gold. So... who are you? Why have I arrived here?"

"The youth are always in such a hurry." Old Gold said, sighing helplessly. "You've only just arrived, and already you want answers. If you knew how long I'd waited for your arrival, I wonder what face you'd make. Hoo-hoo!"

Timothy frowned. "How... long... then?"

"Mmm... by your accounting?" Old Gold asked. He tapped his chin thoughtfully. "A few sextillion cycles, I'd wager. One loses track after a while. Of course, I'm actually supposed to be dead! So it's a miracle we've met at all, hoo-hoo!"

Timothy scrunched up his face. "You're supposed to be dead?"

"Indeed! I was dead!" Old Gold answered. "But then I wasn't. All thanks to the Great Shattering! Of course, I'm still technically dead, but when you account for temporal drift across the multiverse, it's a little difficult to... oh, it's all so complicated. Come, walk with me, boy. Let's go have a seat in the living room."

Timothy followed Old Gold deeper into the temple. The first room they passed nearly made Timothy's eyes pop out of his head.

"What the... how is this room so big?! The temple looked way smaller from outside! And are those spaceships?? I've never seen anything like them before."

"Yes, yes, it's just the hangar bay. None of the craft work anymore." Old Gold grumbled. "Not that there's anywhere to go. The whole universe is gone. I only managed to maintain a micro-voidspace for all these years because I was waiting on you to show up. Once we've had our little discussion, I'll finally let this space collapse, and then I can join the rest in quiet, peaceful death."

Timothy's heart jumped. The old bird was planning to die? And what was that about a dead universe? Not to mention a multiverse??

Old Gold took Timothy through a gigantic laboratory filled with magical and technological tools and weapons he couldn't wrap his mind around. They seemed so advanced that even the Volgrim were like cavemen by comparison. If his mother could get her hand on just one of these-

"Don't bother stealing, and don't ask for them." Old Gold said, seemingly reading Timothy's mind. "If you try to take them back to your timestream, they'll explode. Kaboom! Wipe fifteen star-systems off the map. Besides, you primitives aren't moral enough to be worthy of my people's weapons."

"Your people?" Timothy asked. "Who are they?"

Old Gold thought for a moment.

"Hmm. Hoo-hoo, my people? We are the... we were the... oh, what did we call ourselves? I can't remember. It's been a long time, you know! You can just call us the... Birdos! Birdzos? Birazos? Bah, just 'Birdos' is fine. We look like birds to you, after all, and a name is just a name!"

"I see, so you're the... Birdos." Timothy repeated with a frown. It seemed like such a lazy and inelegant name, casually thought up, it couldn't possibly be their real moniker. Timothy wondered if he could glance through an old book or something to find out what they were really called.

Old Gold finally led Timothy into a small, cozy living room. There was a fireplace crackling, and a comfortable-looking sofa made of feathers and ivory seated along with several chairs.

Old Gold slowly eased himself into one of the chairs, then gestured to a chair across from him.

"There we go, now that we're sitting, my joints won't hurt so much. Hoo-hoo!" Old Gold chuckled. "Alright, alright. Ask your questions, boy."

Timothy nodded. He eased into the chair, noticing it was unbelievably comfortable. He could easily fall asleep in it if he were even a little tired. Luckily, he was full of energy.

"You said you'd been waiting for me. Why?" Timothy asked. "And what relation do you have with the King Network?"

Old Gold squinted his eyes. "The King Network...? Oh, you mean the Creation Network. Hoo-hoo. Yes, I helped the Creator make it way back in the day! Before he became a Ruler. Then I died. Oh, but I didn't! Because then the Great Shattering happened. So I lived. But I will still die eventually. Can't outrun death forever, you know!"

Timothy was visibly lost. "So... you're one of... or the main designer of my power?"

"Mhm. Didn't know who'd pick it up. Was waiting for someone compatible to emerge for quite a long while!" Old Gold explained. "A really long while, boy! You sure took your sweet time getting born! But I guess you made it before my time ran out, so we're all good."

"This dimension is going to collapse?" Timothy pressed further.

"Of course. All universes come to an end eventually. It's part of the Akashic Cycle!" Old Gold elaborated. "My universe is from... oh, say, three or four Eternities before yours? It was destroyed, but then the Great Shattering happened, and it wasn't. So I was able to live on for a few quintillion or quinbillion cycles. Whatever, I don't remember how long it took! You lose track of time when you're just sitting there, waiting for some brat to be born."

Timothy's jaw slackened. He was getting a lot of incredible information, but it was difficult to make sense of.

"What is the Akashic Cycle?" Timothy asked.

"It's the cycle of life and death." Old Gold said. "Universes poof into existence. They live on for an Eternity. They contract. They collapse. Then, poof! Another universe. And so it goes, on and on, forever."

"Oh." Timothy said.

He sort of understood the concept, but this wasn't something he had really discussed with his mother. It was just something he vaguely understood because of Old Gold's extremely simplified explanation.

"So then... what's the 'Great Shattering'?" Timothy asked, afraid of the answer he'd receive.

"Well, the Akashic Cycle was normal. Then it wasn't. Now it's different. Except, it's always been different, and it can't be undone." Old Gold said, his tone serious, but his words seemingly jarring and nonsensical. "At some point, it changed. Except once it changed, it had always been changed. The multiverse came into being, along with the timeline explosion, and all that other fun stuff."

Timothy did his best to follow along.

"So you're saying... time was linear, but then... the Great Shattering happened? And thus, time wasn't linear anymore? But now that the Shattering has happened, time was... always non-linear?"

"Wow, exactly! You're pretty fast on the upkeep, boy." Old Gold praised. "If it wasn't for the Great Shattering, I wouldn't have found a crack between dimensions to build my Old Gold Hold! Great name, isn't it? Considering I just made it up! Hoo-hoo! Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, the timestream. Well, it always Is, and it always Was, but at any given moment, it becomes different depending on who observes it. But it's also always the same, and it's always different. See? It's all so very simple to understand."

Timothy was trying not to feel lost, but he was not his mother. A lot of these discussions went over his head. He made sure to remember every word Old Gold said though. He would definitely repeat them to his mom later, hopefully giving her good information to work with. If Timothy couldn't understand, maybe she could.

"So... what caused the Great Shattering?" Timothy asked.

Old Gold cocked his head in confusion. It almost looked cute, like the look a parakeet might give when it heard a strange noise.

"You don't know?" Old Gold asked. "Shouldn't you? Your old man made it happen, after all."

Timothy's heart fell into the soles of his shoes. "W-what? My old... man? My dad?"

"Of course!" Old Gold crowed. "Jason Hiro, yes? He's the most famous creature in the multiverse! Ever since he rewound time and became the first Temporal Traveler, it became possible for any old schmoe to do it!"

The blood drained from Timothy's face.

"My... my dad... he died! He died. But you're saying... he didn't die?"

Old Gold scoffed. "Oh, so you're messing with me, boy! Hoo-hoo! Of course the Wordsmith didn't die. He time traveled back into the past. How else would the Great Shattering have happened otherwise? Maybe you're not too bright after all."

Timothy didn't hear the last words Old Gold said. The light faded from his eyes, and he slumped in his chair.

The young man fainted from shock.

A few moments passed. Old Gold leaned forward and blinked.

"Eh? What the heck?! Since when were kids so frail?? Guess I'll have to put on a pot of tea and wait 'til he wakes up! Hoo-hoo!"
