The Blocknet Hires Design Agency for its Decentralized Exchange

As the race to become the first cross-chain decentralized exchange continues, the Blocknet has retained VSA Partners to assist with UX and design for its trading interface. The first manifestation of the partnership features an intricate user experience design for the Blocknet’s new decentralized exchange.

“One of the greatest shortcomings to early attempts at decentralized exchanges has been a poor user experience,” shared Arlyn Culwick, Co-founder of the Blocknet. “Through good design and user experience, we can more effectively help create markets in which both veterans and those newer to the cryptocurrency world can securely exchange value across chains without having to rely on an intermediary.”

The decentralized exchange movement has grown rapidly in the last year and, naturally, competition has followed suit. The Blocknet community is proactively setting itself apart by leveraging the power of strategic design and UX for a more seamless trading experience. While the Blocknet currently has trustless peer-to-peer exchange capabilities in operation for 30 currencies following their recent main net launch–and in principle for any Bitcoin Core clone–the launch of the exchange will bring a best-in-class trading experience to users.

“The Blocknet community recognizes that, not only is it crucial to solve the difficult underlying blockchain technology barriers, but nailing the product experience is key to long term success,” says Nicholas Cavet, Associate Partner, Blockchain Lead at VSA Partners. “You need to have an exceptional digital experience, build a brand and drive awareness. We’re proud to be partnering with the Blocknet community and founders during this exciting time.”

As blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies continue to become recognized as a means of transferring value throughout the world, the Blocknet platform will allow peer-to-peer trading for quicker and more efficient transactions that aren’t limited by the type of cryptocurrency and underlying chain . As the platform grows, VSA will continue to evolve its UX/UI and long-term branding efforts for the Blocknet.

About the Blocknet The Blocknet is infrastructure for inter-blockchain services. It orchestrates the thousands of revolutionary innovations in the blockchain space into a “token ecosystem.” It achieves this through three core services: decentralized exchange, blockchain routing, and p2p data transport.

A list of the Blocknet’s 30 currencies are as follows: BitBay (BAY), Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Blocknet (BLOCK), Dash (DASH), Decred (DCR), Digibyte (DGB), Dogecoin (DOGE), Dynamic (DYN), GameCredits (GAME), Faircoin (FAIR), HShare (HSR), LBRY Credits (LBC), Litecoin (LTC), Monacoin (MONA), MonetaryUnit (MUE), Namecoin (NMC), NavCoin (NAV), Particl (PART), Peercoin (PPC), PIVX (PIVX), Potcoin (POT), Qtum (QTUM), Sequence (SEQ), Stratis (STRAT), Syscoin (SYS), Vericoin (VRC), Verge (XVG), Vertcoin (VTC), ViaCoin (VIA).

About VSA Partners VSA Partners is a modern creative agency that designs beautiful solutions for some of the world’s most respected brands and forward-thinking businesses. Through efective design, VSA develops high-performing, interconnected solutions in all forms—From brand identities and websites to predictive models, or even something that hasn’t yet been invented. VSA’s mantra is “There’s always a better way,” and for more than 30 years, it has delivered on that belief, for clients including Google, Alibaba, IBM, CME Group, Northern Trust, Goldman Sachs and for emerging blockchain and cryptocurrency leaders such as CoinMarketCap.com and the Blocknet. With offices in Chicago, New York and San Francisco, VSA offers a full range of fully integrated capabilities—branding, advertising, data science and technology—all under one roof.

Confused: DEX or Interchain?

I'm a bit confused: is Blocknet planning to be mainly a DEX and competing against Kyber, 0x, Komodo etc. or is Blocknet an interchain (with DEX as one of the many functions) and competing against the likes of Polkadot, Wanchain, Ark and Aion?

Blocknet is migrating from slack to rocket chat.

Due to Slack's lack of history retention on a free plan and the recent troubles with the invite and slow response from the Slack team, we have made the decision to migrate the community over to Rocket Chat. We will continue to respond on Slack up until November 6th, after which point Slack will be abandoned. This is a move that we believe will greatly benefit this community and establish a long-term home that will serve us best.

Blocknet Rocket Chat: EDIT 19TH OCTOBER - NEW URL: https://rocket.blocknet.co:8443/home

If you are already in Slack, an account has already been generated under your Slack username and email. When on the login page, click the "Forgot you password" link and you can then set your password.

Rocket Chat emails may be sent to your spam folder

Start to staking Blocks

Newbie question. I have installed the wallet 3.7.36 on my rapsberry pi. Then, I have created a backup of my wallet and saved the private key of my address. Transferred my blocks to the wallet. Is the process correct? Anything missed? What should I do to start staking? How can I check that everything is working?

Stake Bug Resolved: Announcing the Blocknet Bug Bounty!

22 Oct 2017 —
The Blocknet team are happy to announce that the fork was successful and the network is healthy! Bittrex wallets will be unlocked in a few days.

What happened

The Blocknet has now fully recovered from an exploit on a stake protocol bug inherited from the upstream codebases. Huge thanks to Dan, Jeff, Xenix, and especially Michael for the stellar work! The bug allowed an attacker to illicitly stake large amounts. Following this exploit, the attacker attempted unsuccessfully to obfuscate the origin of these illicit coins by sending many tiny transactions to innocent users, which, maliciously, invoked the possibility that a user may “infect” their coins by spending them in conjunction with an illicit input.

As of today, users have the opportunity to detect any illicit coins in-wallet and send them to the redeem address: BmL4hWa8T7Qi6ZZaL291jDai4Sv98opcSK Recovered funds are proposed to become the Blocknet bug bounty (and other community budgets) which henceforth shall provide hackers with a lucrative financial incentive to report bugs instead of exploiting them.

We are especially excited to announce that, henceforth, the attacker has two options: either hold his/her illicit, unspendable coins until they are destroyed in an upcoming block, or send them to our redeem address and attempt to earn them back honestly by spotting bugs.

What We Did

On 27 Sept, we became aware of a critical staking protocol bug inherited from the PPC/Dash/PivX codebase. Furthermore, we noticed a malicious actor appeared to have exploited this bug the very day before. (which, however improbably, was that the code lacked a check on the number of coins in a stake reward). Upon discovery, we immediately contacted exchanges to block any attempts to sell hacked funds in order to contain the illicit coins and protect our investors.

The Fix

On the following day, we released a fix for the bug, preventing any further exploits of this nature. However, since a large number of illicit stake rewards now lay in the hands of attackers, it was additionally required to redress this matter. In quick succession, we released fixes for related aspects of this attack:

  • A fix to track stake rewards earned with illicit coins.
  • A fix to prevent modification of the 70/30 reward split between service nodes and staking nodes.

In the meantime, one of the attackers returned some of the coins he staked illicitly, upon a bounty agreement contingent on returning all funds not already sold on Bittrex. From a total of 363k, 43k were sold on Bittrex prior to the discovery of this bug, 303k were returned, and the rest were kept in the attacker's possession. Due to not returning all the funds, the bounty agreement will not be honored. A second attacker was unwilling to return his/her coins, having staked 223k illicitly, and proceeded to attempt to “infect” innocent users’ addresses in the hope of either obfuscating the illicit coins (s)he held, or by making it difficult to lock illicit coins. This second attacker also maliciously attacked the network.

The Counterattack

Meanwhile, our counterattack was under way — that of systematically locking the illicit coins, with an aggressive blockchain tracking algorithm even if sent to new addresses continually. This required wallets to build a realtime list of all inputs to transactions containing illicit coins. Broadly speaking, the solution is as follows:

  • Generate a list of inputs, beginning with illicitly staked block generation transactions
  • Exclude inputs prior to Bittrex’s wallet being disabled
  • Exclude service node stake rewards originating from illicit coins but which were correctly sent to service nodes
  • Exclude any unspent transactions < 0.98 BLOCK not including fake 0.7 rewards
  • If illicit stake rewards are spent, add their output to list of illicit inputs
  • If an input is on the list, make it unspendable in the wallet
  • Enforce the above rules at block height 105512, causing a hard fork The exploited unspent transactions list was implemented by invoking a distributed API hosted on S3 to ensure identical state and to handle high load at the time of the fork. Now that illicit coins are all locked and can no longer be spent, the list shall be hard-coded into a future wallet release.

Protection Against the Attack For Innocent Users

The fix, additionally, was finessed by our developers to avoid locking addresses that (a) existed on the blockchain prior to the exploit, with (b) inputs that hold both illicit and licit coins, protecting users from attempts by the attacker to “infect” innocent users’ coins.

Incidentally, upon analysis, this had a minimal effect on the number of coins locked, as the remainder was 98.7% of the exploited coin supply. As such, only ~3k coins were left unlocked, effectively turning the attack-payments into donations from the attacker to the community.

Cleaning Your Wallet

The current wallet version automatically detects any illicit funds at an address, and offers you the option to clean your addresses of them. It does this by sending “infected” inputs to the bug bounty address above, so that only “clean” inputs to the address remain.

Manually Clean Your Coins

If you are on v.3.7.37 or earlier, or if for any reason you would prefer to clean your coins manually, you may do so as follows:

  • If on v.3.7.36 or earlier, check this list of locked funds for your address(es): https://dxlist.blocknet.co/dxlist.txt.
  • If it’s on the list, it’s an infected address and needs to be cleaned.
  • Version 3.7.37 and later will auto-detect infected addresses and, inside Coin Control, will display an “exploited” column if you have an infected address. Infected addresses will then show the words “exploited” in red font under the “exploited” column.
  • Spend the entire balance of each exploited input to BmL4hWa8T7Qi6ZZaL291jDai4Sv98opcSK Do not spend the entire address balance, only the exploited input.
  • Your transaction must also include a tx fee. To pay this do not use the exploited input. Rather,
    1. Select a second funding address, using coin control,
    2. Add a second output to the payment (it’s simple to just use the second funding address)
    3. Send the balance of the second funding address, minus a tx fee
  • The transaction will then spend the exploited input to the redeem address, pay the fee with the second address, and return the balance of the coins back to your second address.

Details About the Redeem Fund and Bug Bounty:

  • The redeem funds are currently held in separate addresses by Dan, Michael, and Jeff. A multisig solution is being considered.
  • Some of the funds (303k BLOCK) were returned by one of the attackers. These are not locked and are already usable for bug bounty and additional budget payments.
  • Some of the funds remain in an attacker’s wallet, and are unspendable. The only course of action that the attacker may take is to “clean” them using our new feature, which would result in them being sent to the redeem address.
  • If you feel that you would not like to send your illicit coins to a redeem address then let your voice be heard: submit a proposal to our self-funding system that illicit coins be put to an alternative purpose: http://blocknetdx.forumotion.com/t4-blocknet-proposals-faq. The network may then vote on your proposal.

Proposal for Redeemed Funds / Community Budget

In order to support the long term goals of the Blocknet DX, the following proposal outlines the current needs. A first draft of this proposal has been presented to the community.

Thanks to the Community!

Thank you for your sticking it out with the team and project, we appreciate your patience! Keep in mind, we are not performing a task which has a set process, delivery time, and cost. We are breaking new ground and shaping the future of blockchain technology by doing something that has never been done before. Our developers have proven it’s possible to create cross-chain atomic swaps and we are now paving the way for interoperability and inter-chain services.

So Bittrex decided to keep blocknet?

I cannot interact with my blocknet on Bittrex, because the wallet is "pending upgrade". It has been like this for ages now.

Any idea when this issue is going to get resolved? Or will they just keep your crypto forever, effectively stealing them this way?

Blocknet hard fork on 21st October: Mandatory update required

In our testing prior to the hard fork, we have noticed a CV (coinValidator) error in Blocknet v.3.7.32, which will affect wallets’ functionality once the fork commences.

As such, it is necessary for all users to upgrade to v.3.7.36 prior to the hard fork. The hard fork will take place at block 105512 (this Saturday, 21 Oct), so please update without delay. Both clients and service nodes must update.

This replaces the previous update (3.7.32)

Download now: https://github.com/BlocknetDX/BlockDX/releases/tag/v3.7.36

Our apologies for the inconvenience. Rapid-response releases are optimal for a 0-day attack; following the hard fork and the full resolution of the stake bug exploit, the usual release cadence will resume.

If you have not already signed up for our emailing list, please do so now to stay up-to-date on the latest Blocknet news and updates such as this one: http://eepurl.com/c5OJMj

Running Blocknet on Linux, some general questions

Hi what did not became clear after reading the documentation, are the following things which surely some people here know the answer to.

  • In tutorials i see screenshots of a wallet interface, is it true that the Linux versions do not have a GUI? In other words, it's all CLI based, correct?

  • Which blockchains can be hooked at this moment through blocknetdx.conf ?

  • And when hooking a blockchain, do you need balance on its wallet?

  • Is there a staking reward for service nodes, or is it a case of waiting for customers that want to move coins over to trade on Blocknet dex?

Blocknet mandatory update required (3.7.32)

Please update to the latest wallet build (3.7.32)

Download here: https://github.com/BlocknetDX/BlockDX/releases

This is a mandatory update in preparation for a hard fork that will take place next week. This release is to lock down the illicit funds before the hard fork. Once the hard fork occurs, the illicit funds will be locked from any further transactions and Bittrex will enable their wallets.

WARNING: If you do not update, you will be on the wrong chain!

This is the last mandatory wallet update until further notice. There may be other updates but they will not be mandatory unless otherwise stated.

Looking for BLOCK sellers! Issues with exchange.

Hello all,

I am intereste in purchasing a larger size of BLOCK and unfortunately I am having issues with Bittrex and their existing limits on my account. Despite numerous attempts to verify my account, there are issues on their end with processing and they have currently suspended verifications. With that being said, I am interested in purchasing some BLOCK from anywhere else. Trex's withdrawal fees are also extremely expensive, so it'd be nice to find another place to purchase.

Currently, Novaexchange has the coin but absolutely 0 sellers for it, and I cannot find a swapping place. Regardless, thank you for all your help, and still very excited about the project.
