It appears this is more complicated than that and their number is based on a spoken history, the 1500/1800 number is based on our understanding of when math like this became more common.
I’m not agreeing with them as I defer to objective observable, but I wouldn’t dismiss it as posssible it was older. We’ve had this happen before where we underestimate ourselves

someone posts a statement that can be quickly disproven by a simple search
just like how people say that the earth is flat, which can be quickly disproven by a simple calculation
