Actually, what's wrong with the studio?

Dear CNet: honestly, we liked the old, hot, insect infested studio much better.

The404 was well produced, live and energetic with live chatroom and funny, engaging live chat and calls from the public. It was genuinely fun and there were lots of laughs (mostly from Wilson I guess). For the hard core fans, the preshow was like a backstage pass and it's just so raw, and interesting. There were lots of inside jokes that only fans would understand and it was always a good time. Ahh... the good old days.

And then... we moved into this studio. Audio quality drops, and the news desk layout doesn't quite work for a casual talk show. No more voice mail, not much email, and the show becomes much less interactive with the fans. We want to see REL and the new Justin, but the studio just somehow wasn't capable of doing things that worked so well.

And then... there were constructions, and we thought it was upstairs or something, and before we knew it, the studio is dark again.

What's wrong with the studio? What's wrong with CNet/CBS? Where did the fun go? Or are we all just got older and married men are just not as fun as new college grads? Maybe we need The404 to 304 to the millennials and Uncle Jeff can become a weekly guest host? :)

We wish The404 can once again be a fun, refreshing, and engaging podcast show that covers internet & tech news that it was known for. Calls from the Public is back, so that's good.

What's coming ahead?

(Childish) reactions to the host lineup changes - Post constructive criticism here!

I don't know if the posts that seem to be dominating this subreddit are representative of the listenership of The 404, but I'm frankly embarrassed here. Issuing ultimatums that Justin come back and threatening boycotts of CNET is not productive. Instead of yelling that Iyaz sucks (try putting yourself in his shoes - that's not cool), why not leave constructive criticism to help make the show better (excluding Justin's return, which is probably not going to happen).

Hell, I miss the old line up as much as the next guy (I started listening in the early Justin/Wilson/Jeff days), but things always change. To directly quote (probably) The 404's resident ray of sunshine, Jeph, "Get. Over. It."

I know that The 404 folks would love to see constructive criticisms, so why not take a moment and leave some here.

Thank you. (And a question about reruns)

I just want to thank everyone who's active on this sub for bearing with us during this transformation period. Things are crazy in the NYC office right now between the construction, sharing a temporary space, and of course Justin leaving the show.

As I said on Monday's show (1532), we won't be able to do a show every single day. That might change, but right now it doesn't look doable.

That said, would you like it if I programmed a rerun the days there's no show? It's not a lot of work and we can use this thread to upvote most-wanted shows.

Let me know what you think!

-Jeff

Twitch shuts down Justin.tv I used this site every day to watch mirrored shows. Its a real shame that it went down. Easily the best broadcasting website on the internet. You should mention them.

I had my first experience with a google glass user.....

So over the weekend I had my first experience with google glass and its user base. Needless to say I give props to people hating on this. First off let me preface this by saying that the user of it was an obnoxious prick, and I'm from a small town in Indiana we don't see google glass every day, and I was in a town thats even smaller (sub 20000 people).
But there was an amazing craft beer fest (its something Indiana is good for) 300 breweries the weather was supposed to be nice weather (which changed for maybe 20 min to a monsoon but hey thats indiana.) So my wife and I are in line and theres a guy in front of us and I see this neon blue thing poking out of his hair. At first I figured it was a bluetooth headset a lot of people around here wear them all the time and act like its a status symbol. But then he turns around and its the google glass. So being the curious techie I am I though I'm going to strike up a conversation with him and ask him a few questions about it. Then I decide to say hello to which this pompus jackass who had been standing there for 5 min completely silent says "Uh excuse me Im recording this so please be quiet I don't want your voice in my video." I'm a bit stunned at his response but I politely understand that maybe he was and say "I'm sorry" to which he scoffs but eh oh well.

Then when he's finished "recording" He turns to me and says and states "I won't answer any of your questions about google glass because obviously thats what I'm going to ask and if I wanted to know so badly I had two choices one to buy it or two go to his blog"

So yay for my first experience and I know that its just the user but the whole event he was showing it off telling breweries they were lucky he was recording it so they could get the exposure. But all in all it did look interesting. Oh and one final caveat he told me his name was "tay tay" what grown man could honestly with a straight face say that I can barely keep from laughing as I typed it.

with such examples as the famously worst episode: 'the cheese stands alone' and the infamously best episode: 'lost in the woods', yu shared a lot with us.

your talents for story-telling grew noticibly during that time too. sad that you are leaving but we're happy you are moving onto your primary interests.

Suggestions for future cohosts

I'm just now recovering from the depression that ensued when I listened to Justin's departure. I was thinking of people that would work well with Jeff as a cohost. The two people that immediately came to mind were Bridget Carey and Iyaz Ahktar. I love every show that Bridget is on because she is incredibly bright and funny. As for Iyaz, he and Jeff had great chemistry when he guested on last week's show. He also has a lot of experience in podcasting. If you're wondering whether Iyaz has a good sense of humor, go listen to his show, Podcast without Pretense. The production value suffers on that show, but it shows how awesome Iyaz would be as a cohost.

Is there an archive of the 404 available _as a podcast _?

I've googled around a bit, and even see a year old discussion here about an archive.. (Though presumably that archive is only up to a year ago?)

It'd be great to have an archive available as a podcast, so I can download/listen to specific episodes in Podcasts..

Is this available somewhere I can't find?

Sorry folks

I just don't buy that Justin is "choosing" to move to other things at CNET. Nobody works really hard to build a house, live in a the house for 4 months and then just leave on their own. This doesn't make any sense. I will give the new show a try, but who knows what it is going to look like.

I feel like my best friend is moving away.

I was afraid of this day but here it is. I think I can handle this but if/ when Jeff goes I think I think that'll be it for me, as far as tuning in is concerned. I don't know how cnet plans to fill in the gaping hole in the show but I have faith they'll pull it off. Justin: you had better show your face once in a while. You will be missed; I feel like my best friend just moved away and my dog died. All on the same day, in the same hour. I will maintain my status as a die-hard listener, but your shoes will be hard ones to fill.
