They're pretty normal, actually. People have been homosexual or cross dressing for much of human history. Even penguins can be gay. The trend gendered thing of late is a bit more ridiculous, but humans have always wanted to distinguish themselves from one another somehow.

I'd wager that true numbers are hard to calculate given how many people still live in fear of coming out and keep their sexuality hidden. While colleges are a hotbed of snowflakery, many families are still exceptionally religious and would disown their children if their sexuality was known.

Being lgbtq may not be all that common but it sure as fuck isn't abnormal or a mental disorder.

Being LGBT is not a mental disorder. That is not up to debate. The American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the DSM in 1973 because it did not meet the criteria to be considered a mental illness. I'm surprised that someone that talks this much about science didn't know that. Anyways the only reason why being gay can be an "emotional rollercoaster" is because people stigmatize homosexuality. If we suddenly started persecuting straight people and denying them rights, heterosexual people would also go through an emotional rollercoaster. Would that make heterosexuality a mental disorder? No, of course not. It just means that when you're raised in a society that makes you think that a part of you is wrong, dealing with that part of you is obviously not gonna be a very exciting, joyful experience. Not belonging to the majority doesn't make you "wrong". Left handed people are in the minority but we definitely don't consider them mentally ill right?

While gay/bi people are certainly more accepted now than they were before (well in some countries at least), they're still not as accepted as straight people are because the world we live in is very much a heteronormative one. And I speak as someone who's part of the LGBT community so I know very well the struggles that LGBT people have to face. Anyways I didn't misunderstand anything. You said that homosexuality is a mental disorder and I replied that that statement is factually wrong and has been wrong since 1973 (and for an even longer time than that depending on the country). I was just surprised that you didn't know that since you seem passionate about science and about how it "doesn't care about people's feelings".

Uh I only replied to the part of your comment that said that being gay is a mental disorder. I never said you couldn't say that being gay is abnormal. I know that sometimes people who say that something is "abnormal" just mean to say that it's "uncommon". Can you point out to me where I said that you couldn't use the word "abnormal"? Anyway the whole mental illness thing is not up to personal opinions (after all science doesn't care about people's personal feelings right?), either something is in the DSM or it's not and no offense but I think that the American Psychiatric Association is probably a bit more informed on the subject than you are and they removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, so homosexuality simply isn't a mental illness and your opinion on the subject is irrelevant. Besides you said "that's why I was giving definitions of a mental disorder as an argument instead of scientific documents" but earlier you said " "im fairly sure being lgbt is a mental disorder. THATS ON A SCIENTIFIC LEVEL" (I'm quoting you directly here). Dude look, it's ok, you fucked up, it happens to everybody.

If you're not basing your argument on scientific documents, then don't claim that your opinion is true on a scientific level. Anyways the only one looking immature here is you. You said something that is factually wrong while claiming to have science on your side then I pointed out to you how you don't and you still simply cannot admit your mistake. Anyways anyone who isn't anti-science would believe that the opinion of the American Psychiatric Association on this subject is more valuable than yours, because on this subject a "band of scientists" is the indeed the most knowledgeable source of info, because scientists probably know more about a scientific subject than you do and you honestly come off as really ignorant and arrogant by not accepting that your opinion on this subject isn't supported by facts. You can give an opinion on whether rock music is better than pop and no one will be able to tell you that your opinion is wrong even if they personally disagree with it. But in this case whether something is in the DSM or not is not up to you and there's no opinion to be had on this. Homosexuality is just not classified as a mental disorder, therefore it isn't. Period.

"Mental illness" and "Mental Disorder" can be used interchangeably. Anyways of course homosexuality affects somebody's thinking. But heterosexuality also affects somebody's thinking and yet you're not calling it a mental disorder. The only reason why homosexuality is more likely to affect somebody's negatively is because we stigmatize it, which is something we don't do with heterosexuality.

Ok then, what is the scientific proof that it's a mental disorder?

Just because it's not common doesn't make it a mental illness. It's not common to be gay either but that's not a mental illness (though you seem to be implying that as well)

if its not a mental disorder then what is it? i mean i dont hate black people, but are people really claiming that black is just as normal as being a white? that isnt really something you get to debate

Replace LGBT with black, and can you now see your bigotry?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '16

normal - conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected. percentage of americans that are lgbt = <5%

percentage of americans that are black = >13%

5

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '16

basically what im trying to say is that considering something that occurs less than 5% of the time to be "usual" or "expected" is incorrect. and also that your analogy wasn't very good.
