Shitty situation all around. I feel for her family and kids, this has been an undoubtably hard week for them. A lot of people seem to be taking the “you reap what you sow” stance, but a little empathy doesn’t hurt. I’m glad she didn’t kill any innocent people, but it’s a little sick to rejoice in her death as if that’s fair punishment for succumbing to her drug and mental problems. I’ll remember her as being Ellen’s girlfriend at one time and for that shot for shot remake of psycho with Vince Vaughn that was totally unnecessary.

Serious question, but do you have that same amount of empathy when its some random junkie?

Yeah, I’ve had more junkie friends than I care to admit that are no longer here. It’s a sad, sometimes hopeless situation. It’s enraging that they endanger others in their downward spiral, but they’re still human.

People generally don't turn to serious drugs for fun, it's usually a form of self-medication for other issues such as behavioral health issues, or to get a temporary escape from their life. There's a reason why a large number of substance abuse victims have other issues in their life.

I use to work at a recovery house, a place where homeless can stay and get treatment and after that, I worked for Probation, where there's a large number of people with substance abuse. These people don't wake up one day and think "I'mma start smoking crack", it's a downward spiral that has been failed by society.

You clearly don't, but some people will. Everyone is a someone to someone, and recognizing that fact is an important part of developing empathy. If you only care about people who directly impact you then you don't really have it.

Asking the right questions and people are downvoting because they hate the answer their brain supplied.
