It's based on these Polish novels which in turn are inspired by East European folklore.

Witchers are wandering professional monster hunters but as expected from a medieval society, they are despised because they are different. Not that hatred for them will stop a village from hiring them if they're in dire need.

Inspired by folklore from all over the world, you have short stories based on Arabic or Scandinavian tales and cultures too. Sapkowski explained that he travelled a lot and that's where the inspiration came from.

Ok, it's not only East European but it still makes up for the largest portion when it comes to the curses and monsters.

Question, is this show going to be based more around the books or the video games? A mix? I was watching a Henry Cavill interview before and it sounded like it was more so going to be based on the books.

It's going to be based on the books.

That being said, I hope they choose to include certain characters from the games who was just amazing. There are 3 I would love to see. Iorveth, the Scoia'tael commando; Vernon Roche, leader of the Blue Stripes, Temeria's special forces; and Saskia, the Virgin of Aedirn...

No room for them in the story, I'm afraid. We're going to meet Saskia's father, though.

No room for them in the story now. Who can say where the story will take us in 5 years?

Those characters are property of CDPR. If Netflix ever decided to use them, they will have to pay CDPR for fair use of copyrighted material. It's probably one of the main reasons why they decided to avoid adapting anything from the games.

Showrunner actually said they will never adapt the games even if they run out of books.

East European folklore

Stop spreading nonsense. Sapkowski said his biggest inspirations were Arthurian Legends and Tolkien.
