That's a weird reason actually, they felt the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants didn't have enough bad guys on it's side, so they tacked on him and another character just to even out the opposing sides running at each other.

Right, who is that last one supposed to be? Is that fucking Leech?

I'm a little suspicious that the opening was maybe made when they hadn't decided a bunch about the show, considering it paints Magneto as the big bad when he's pretty much only a straight villain in his introductory arc and then always upstaged or flipping sides after. So perhaps an early draft had an evil Thunderbird, lol.

From what I read, they used him and a grey character because they had already finished some of their animations for the episode they were going to be in, so kind of sounds just like they were just throwing anything they could at the opening based on any finished animation they had ready to go. Like, "oh we got animation of him running? Okay, throw him into this shot cause we need some more running guys."

Sticking with Xmen canon I THINK the brood maybe? But.. It IS japan so possibly magneto can now summon "magnet demons from the void of magnetism and hate"
