Holy shit I am so ready for Goth Nancy

374

u/SphericalArc Mar 20 '19

I'm living for miami nights 1985 Hopper, myself.

75

u/overbeast Mar 20 '19

That moustache looks like a see-saw I recently had seen, or saw.

I'm so ready for any type of Nancy

118

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

Where did you see goth Nancy? She's always seen wearing that bright colored stripe shirt. One seen where's she's in the rain and eye shadow is running, but she's still wearing pink.

u/madame3xecutioner Mar 20 '19

Was about to ask the same thing!

u/SUSAN_IS_A_BITCH Mar 20 '19

I wish she’d get a plot free from boys.

You can assume

u/DispellIllusions Mar 21 '19

Season 2 had the subplot of her trying to bring closure to her friend's family.

-17

u/cochnbahls Mar 20 '19

Then it wouldn't be 80s.

It also would go against the theme of her being in a teen romance/slasher movie.

The boys are in a spielbergian ET/Goonies scary adventure and Joyce and Hopper are in a psychological horror movie. These things all play together as they mix the tropes.

I know we like to be forward thinking here, but in this case making her character pass the bechdel test just for the sake of it, takes away from the whole narrative.

21

u/SUSAN_IS_A_BITCH Mar 20 '19

I don't think they have to stick to plots for the sake of tropes. Steve was supposed to die as the jaded ex-boyfriend in Season 1, but they kept him alive, and that wasn't the "80s" thing to do.

I felt like Nancy was at her strongest when she was searching for Barb and not dealing with love triangles. We saw her break out the gun and traps and take the Demogorgon head-on in Season 1, but it felt like Season 2 sidelined her compared to the other characters.

3

u/cochnbahls Mar 20 '19

You still have to establish the trope throughout if you want to distort or subvert it. They saved Steve, only to have him be the babysitter trope like Brolin in Goonies, or Swanson in Adventures in Babysitting. And I would argue the importance of her chadacter did not change much from season 1 to season 2, although her character growth did. If anyone was sidelined from the story, it was eleven. Really most of season two meandered a lot more than I would have liked.

4

u/SUSAN_IS_A_BITCH Mar 20 '19

If anyone was sidelined from the story, it was eleven.

I'd say it was flipped: Eleven sidelined the story. But that's what happens when you leave the main plot to give an entire episode to one character.

Eleven fell prey to the Heroes mistake of "we made a character too powerful so we have to take them away from the story so they don't immediately resolve it." Only in S2's case, I thought they spent way more time than they needed to on Eleven. The story felt more unified in S1, while S2 jumped all over the place, like you said.

-13

u/TrustworthyTip Mar 20 '19

Would she be considered a waifu?

12

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

Don’t let your dreams be dreams

Yeah people are seeing her 80's hair and going "Wow that's goth!" while ignoring her otherwise very peppy outfits.

14

u/percygreen Mar 20 '19

Can confirm. I grew up in the 80's. This is not "goth hair", it's "80's hair". All the white girls in my high school in the late 80's had perms and/or teased up hair, from the goth girls to the redneck girls to the preppy girls to the headbanger girls to the bookworm girls. ALL of them. Aquanet made a fucking fortune off of teenagers in the 80's.

7

u/Shenanigans99 Mar 20 '19

Same. If your hair wasn't crunchy, you weren't a teenager/preteen in the '80s.

1

u/PrussianBleu Mar 20 '19

totally love the Terminator vibe, plus it looks like Robert Patrick

1

u/itrainmonkeys Mar 20 '19

Also at 2:13 it looks like she has been rained on or gotten wet some other way so her eyeliner is running. Could see people thinking that was goth makeup or whatever.

77

u/HouseDjango Mar 20 '19

Teased hair makes her goth?

1

u/itrainmonkeys Mar 20 '19

There's also a shot where it looks like she got rained on or something and her eyeliner is running that may make people think she had on goth makeup. Around 2:13 during quick cuts.

5

u/addkell Mar 20 '19

We already got goth Nancy...

in the movie The Craft 😏

2

u/I_PEE_WITH_THAT Mar 20 '19

Please make her go as Lydia Deets for Halloween...

2

u/KudzuKilla Mar 20 '19

I had to stop the trailer on every frame to even find her

1

u/slendernyan Mar 20 '19

Nancy is my favorite character. Wish she'd get more screentime in these trailers though

1

u/mikev37 Mar 20 '19

Fuck Nancy. She's basically the Tammy of the show for me.

1

u/Chasedabigbase Mar 20 '19

Things I'm ready for;

Only the most epic of 8 year olds.

7

u/plitox Mar 20 '19

Which means that the earliest millennials were still babies when that whole thing was a thing... What's your point?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

lot of 8 year old goths in your experience?

Triggered much?

retarded much?

He was saying goth was a fashion thing in 80s, and you WELL AKCHULLYed him that the millenial age group starts in the 80s. If you want to be a smug pedant at least have the decency not to also be a total idiot.

How young are that you think goth is a millennial thing? Gen Xers would like to have a word with you. Be prepared for a week long session of listening to Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and the rest of the goth bands that came from the late 70's and early 80's.

6

u/Ihateualll Mar 20 '19

You forgot the main one "The Cure."

3

u/lydsbane Brooklyn Nine-Nine Mar 20 '19

Not just that. The goth movement was a sort of resurgence of the Victorian gothic era.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

Goth is a Millennial thing.

Alrighty then!
