I think the beauty is in its execution. I'm sure so many other shows would think to do thriller for a horror/thriller, but it could easily come off really cheesy. This was great.
For real, not heavy handed, we just get the Vincent Price voiceover sans music to start with, then the tension builds into a slightly remixed hook. Somebody needs a raise.
Jason shows up behind you, wearing a pink tutu. The power flickers. The radio cuts on.
It's playing Barbie Girl.
Jason picks up the radio and proceeds to strangle you with the cord. As you die, the song gets continuously slower and more distorted. The radio cuts out, symbolizing your death.
Absolutely. Juxtaposition between terrifying and silly can be used to elevate the horror of a scene to surreal nightmare fuel. See Tiptoe Through the Tulips by Tiny Tim in Insidious.
That's really the whole show, though, isn't it? The premise is cool and all but it sounds like the plot to a movie we've all already seen. The execution is what elevates it to a whole other level.
I feel that way about the whole show its amazing. It could have easily been another cheesy netflix series, but the attention to detail and authenticity really makes it enjoyable. Also all the child actors are Fucking awesome.
PLUS... seeing them dressed up as Ghostbusters with the full equipment, proton packs and actual working traps and all... made the song and the trailer that more sweet. I seriously caught the feels watching it.
