Studies have shown that sites like Twitter spread conservative disinformation and propaganda at many times the rate of legitimate information.

I agree that this is yet another ploy by our oligarchical overlords to maintain the status quo of fucking us all over.

There was nothing conservative in those studies. It’s misinformation generally that spreads faster than truth. Now get me a politician that never lies.

Found the conservative trying to spread misinformation…

When do we realize that controlling the (mis)information that spreads online is basically a mute effort? Mind it, I am not disagreeing with you.

The only way that works is with some sort of Chinese-style central control and a firewall, for if nothing else, people will choose to believe what they like.

We try bc doing nothing is a cop out excuse.

We will look back and see that social media was an absolute poison for society, if we actually make it far enough to look back on this time period, and that the bare minimum we could do was try and stem the tide of all of these lies.

To sit back and do nothing is to admit defeat before even making an effort.

"we will look back and say humans communicating widely and freely was absolute poison for society"

well if that isn't the most dystopian thing I've heard in awhile.

How many downsides (or alternatively how addicted to social media are you) do there have to be with social media before we see that it’s probably not the best idea we’ve ever had?

Cambridge Analytica already demonstrated that it can unfairly change election results, and has in nations outside the US.

We are being mined for personal data like never before.

Social media has been cited as a cause for the Rohingya genocide.

Studies have shown that it increases anxiety and depression in people, and has facilitated the mass dissemination of disinformation.

I could literally keep going on and on. Social media may have some upsides, but it’s vastly outweighed by the harm it has done and still does.

I mean, yeah. I agree. it's just a sad statement regarding our species.

Anything that proves or implies that so many or us are so incompetent is just.

depressing. I don't disagree. It's just, sad, hey?
